I want to take a trip out west

meand a few friends wanna take a trip out west next season to film a video so im start savin now but we dont know what the best resort for back country/park is (we are east coast skiers)

When people ski from the peak off the backside down to wheelerville road that shit is out of bounds. Therefore it can be considered backcountry, meaning if you get lost or hurt you're fucked. Although you're probably thinking of something else and are just clueless in general.

Something that every east coast skier dreams of. I'd love to go to Utah and chill at park city one day and hike for some turns the next, but I'm not going to just go do it, making plans is a huge part of it (which is what evan, while not exactly the best way, is trying to say). Basically, you guys (op and friends) really need to sit down and figure out exactly what you want to do, then do some research in what it takes to do that (from real sources, not ns, there are several government and other resources out there to help you out) before you even pick what area, or even state you want to go too.

part of what you quoted said "deep snow". Colorado is not known for its consistent DEEP powder days the way jhole, SLC, tahoe, whis etc are known.

anyone who doubts the gnarliness of CB and telluride is stupid. But if those areas had the tahoe kind of snow that sticks to uber steep lines, it would be 2x as gnarly.

meh, CB would be less gnarly, cause some those no fall zones would just turn into steep pitches. as far as snowfall, the PNW is in a league of its own, squaw broke its record...which was about the same as baker's average.

i get it bro. im an east coaster too and im going to westminster college next year (down the street from the university of utah). if you want the perfect combination of park and backcountry access go to brighton. best of both worlds

This, i think we got off track by fighting over what was considered Backcountry, east vs west, etc. The point is that trips out West are fun as tits, and as long as you practice good judgement and dont do anything stupid on Backcountry, or off piste, or whatever you want to call it, then go have fun.

Come to the South lake Tahoe area. We've got everything here and if you were really so inclined to be an idiot and go backcountry the sierra cement has less avy danger. At least you guys will have that going for you but still just stay in the resorts there is plenty to ski.

i would probably agree with brighton.. however if he is from out of town there is no reason to not go park city/alta/snowbird since he will be buying day passes. Plus I really dont want to see this kid die in the rock gardens

yes, south lake is the way to go for sure. If you do come to tahoe, do everyone a favor and shred south shore...exclusivly. You will love it and have a great time.

Go to summit county, I lived out there for awhile. There is a free bus that runs all day that will take you to A Basin, Keystone, Breck and Copper. so you can try a little bit of everything. I haven't been to Utah, so I can't comment on anything out there, but when I lived in Dillon I had a lot of fun going back and forth between Keystone and A Basin

This year Steamboat had just over a 12 foot base. How is that created if there are not a bunch of deep pow days? I had over 10 days this season in which I skid waist deep pow all day, probably 20 where I could find deep pow on days where it hadnt even snowed

You stupid ignorant fuck take a look at what i wrote. I said Colorado is not known for deep pow days that occur on a consistent basis. Christ almighty, steam boat averages 350" a year...that is nothing compared to the places i mentioned. Steamboat exceeded their average by almost 100" this year and they still werent within 350" of tahoe! 12 ft base? Tahoe had a 25-30 ft base!

You had a record year and only had 10 pow days!! that is not a powder mecca. Anywhere that i had previously mentioned, punks the absolute shit out of steamboat in everything from terrain, to snowfall.

Please try again, or better yet sit down, shut up, get learned.

Weel i didnt read all the post before me. But to the OP, I would suggest you to go too Salt lake city,Colorado or tahoe if you want to ski more than one mountain. I went to SLC last year and it was pretty epic, When theres new snow you ski Alta/Bird, thesecond day you go too solitude/brighton and if you want park go to PCMR/Canyon. WHen i was there, i hit Solitude,Snowbasin,Bird,Alta, Solitude,CAyon. Solitude was the most fun imo. Rent a house in Salt Lake City ( Homeaway.com) and a big truck whit 4x4. Cant speak for CO and TAhoe. NExt Winter im going to Revelstoke, since im Canadian i want to ski Whistler,REvelstoke,BAnff, FERnie, whitewater and KH before 25 years old, its my plan/dream ( im 19). If not For park and powder in the same day, Whistler is the place too go, but $$$$

So if you want to go out west and ski deep pow, I would suggest too stay in the resort. You can find powder even 5 days after a storm, if not, do a day of cat skiing.

Woah buddy I never said it was better than Tahoe or any of the places you mentioned. I did not even say that it was a Powder Mecca. BUT Steamboat IS known for its deep powder skiing champagne powder and open glades.

yes, everyone knows the mystical stats of epic Mt. Baker. Unfortunatly, baker(inbounds) is very tame compared to the places i mentioned, as well there is not a park within 100 miles(something the OP wanted).

And on a related note, my penis is larger(in girth, and length) than yours.

Baker's average is subject to outliers. While it is still true that Baker gets lots of snow, consistently more then almost anywhere other then Alyeska, it is not exactly high on my list of places to call home. I would much rather ski at Tahoe then Baker. Something about rain.

The google is your friend, I do not feel like going into the details regarding skier visits, season pass holders vers day ticket buyers, forest service leases, small mammal mating seasons, or the fact that 90% of those skiing baker affter April 1st have touring bindings and use them after 11:00am even if the lifts are running.

As for Alyeska being bellow average this year, every place has bad year, and they still have received more then many 'western' resorts average.

Agreed. Snoqualmie has a great park. But if u want to get some serious backcountry head over to crystal mt. Everything around their is great.

learn proper BC/sidecountry/traverse/hiking ettiquite as well. One thing i cant stand is when a group of people just sit in the middle of a traverse trying to scout out a line, or when idiots hike on a flat/sloping traverse and dont get out of your way
