tell me what you like, what you dont. its my first roll of film and first pictures ive ever really taken for the art of it. ive been reading about all the concepts for a while, and once i got a camera i just sort of went nuts trying to apply them mixed with random pics. no hate please!
shot on a canon ae-1 with various lenses, and fujifilm 200 iso somethingorother from tops because i was too stoked on having a camera to wait to get good film

Photos are looking good man. Remember to use different apertures for what your trying to achieve. It seems like you are doing what almost everyone does their first time, which is to automatically to to F3.5 or around there and use shallow depth of field. Just remember that not every picture needs shallow depth of field, I know this now because I did the same thing my first time shooting film. Also mess with using different speeds of film such as 400,800,3200 speed film and see how that works out for you.

Just keep going at it man, but your stuff looks killer.

Awesome shot. I definitely agree with closing that aperture a bit. The gun shots would have been so much better if you had the muzzle within your DOF. Good job though!

thanks for the critique guys, the still life ish pic was definitly the star of the roll. i wasn't trying for the low DOF every time, but i had to because i has 200 iso film in there and i was trying not to get too low on the shutter speed. some of them are blurry because at the range i didn't have a tripod with me and i know theres the keep it at 1/60th or above but i had to go down to 1/30th or even lower on some, which is why the dof is so small on a lot of them. second roll will be better hopefully, i had 400 iso and it was in sunlight and partially at that range so i hope those turned out better. they might be overexposed though because it was pretty bright and i didnt have any ND filters, should probably get some

I agree with everything he said except for this. When shooting color film, going over 800 is just bad news bears. Black and white is fine, but color grain is pretty disgusting, and you're going to get a shit ton even with 800.

Shooting my first roll of film in years right now. Should be extra interesting considering my lightmeter is weird so im sunny16/eyeballing it all.

post it up! is your battery okay? mine overexposes for my taste when its dead on for my taste so i underexposed some stuff on the second roll

yeah the batteries are fine, its just something genuinely wrong with the meter. but yeah once i finish the roll ill definitely post it up. its just taking me a while since im in the midst of finals chaos as well.

if you plan on shooting a lot of film a scanner will pay for itself very quickly.

yeah im considering going that route along with b&w film, so i can develop at home. cause taking it to the store is really expensive...

yeah. b&w processing is pretty cheap and easy from what i hear. ive never done it myself, but will probably start soon. however i already have a scanner at home from my dad scanning all his old kodachrome slides to digi.

ive done it before, its really not to hard at all. i have a flatbed document scanner which may/may not work, but i'll give it a shot. i'm saving for a t2i right now, and with no reliable source of income, its hard to justify spending so much on film photography, when it should be going to my digi cam, so im trying to do everything as cheaply as possible. i plan to do a lot more film once ive got the t2i, one roll and i have a serious addiction to the film look... it just looks so much better.

film also forces you to think more before you shoot. im convinced kids today take poor photos because they learned on digital where there are no "consequences" so to speak. digi is great because you see results instantly, but at the same time thats a curse because people just point the camera and shoot, no thought goes into it. when you are potentially wasting film you think a lot harder before you shoot.

however for certain things like action sports where you are literally shooting hundreds of frames in a day, obviously film makes little sense. both have their place IMO

Use the flatbed! Just get a neg holder for it. Honestly, if you're just scanning your stuff to throw up on flickr or something then it will work just fine. Then if you need to scan a certain shot at high quality, send it out to a lab. Scanners cost a fuck load (thousands), so it's really not worth it for most people. My plan when I get out of school is to get a shit flatbed, and then send it out to labs when I need to. So Ben, I'm wicked jealous you already have one.
