..think of trying out skis that are fat, and have rocker rather than camber? doesnt that seem like something people should have tried some time before the past decade? especially given that the first skiing probably took place in fresh soft snow as opposed to packed groomers?
someone with a good knowledge of ski history fill me in here..thanks

I THINK YOU'RE ON TO SOMETHING! And like, why didnt the wright brothers make the first plane a 747? It makes sense, why not put more people in the air with more comfort going way faster, right? Those guys were fucking idiots.

width probably had a lot to do with the weight of skis back in the day. i mean, if my 04 rossi scratches were twice the width they are now, they would be FUCKING HEAVY.
as far as rocker and camber, i have no idea.

The technology didn't exist until recently to make skis torsionally rigid. That explains fat skis.

This. People made fun of Mcconkey for using them and they called them "old man skis"

ookay, so i was on the right track.. so why did we go back to skinny cambered skis? why did gnarcats like gaffney use skinny, cambered skis to shred big lines and shit, was it because of what people were saying earlier, people just thought they were uncool?

i think it took time for people to advance to the kind of slopes and skiing conditions they needed super fattys in. after groomers came along i assume everyone wanted to go fast and make nice turns. but it took until McConkey to think outside the box and realize what the potential is in a ski like that

technology has to progress. sure, it was an exaggerated comparison to get my point across, but you cant just create the best thing right away, you need to get their through trial and error

hes right actually. why was the first computer as big as a room and just gay colors like black and green when they could make a 5 lb laptop with all the colors and pictures and shit

obviously i'm no expert here, but i don't think that analogy is close at all..skis were invented to slide on the snow, a ski being wider than your foot rather than skinnier and bending upward rather than downward are pretty intuitive, fundamental ideas..relatively easy to implement

The analogies are a little off. Yes the knowledge for camber and rocker wasn't there, but why did we go back to skinny skis is a good question

Because in the past there was not strong enough materials to make up for the greater torsional forces generated by the leverage of fatter skis and the edge would just twist out.

that sounds believable, but even in the 80s and 90s we didnt have the technology??

They skied with 3m+ long skies back in the days. Were talking 18th century and before here. Really wide as well. 6kg per ski.
