Guess why our mountain closes so early.

our mountain (mt washington BC canada) closes tommorow with 6.5m of snow, the past few days have been some of the few in my memory that the parking lots were so full that cars were parked on the mountain road around the first bend.
why would they make such a horrible financial desicion you might ask?
fucking marmots
literally, mt washington is home to some of the very few, vancouver island marmots, and may is when the furry little bastards tunnel their way out of the snow to get it on, on our god damned mountain.
due to the fact that there were fewer than thirty of the species left in the wild at the last species assesment for the recovery plan in 08, they decided to enact mesures to protect them, including forcing our mountain to shut down in the midst of what could possibly be the best spring season in all of history.
what do you propose we do?

sounds pretty reasonable... hell some mountains just close cuz their leases are done. Consider yourself lucky you get to go till may.

Sounds reasonable, no point in destroying a species. Plus you are lucky to ski this long with that much snow.

You know a lot of mountains close with a lot of snow left each year, right?

Had the deepest base in 20 years...We were also the first resort to close in the state all because of money. I remember reading about some places in Colorado opening back up because it kept snowing. If you live in place like that consider yourself lucky. As soon as it closed 2 weeks ago it snowed for a week straight.

yay Marmots! Mtns also close early because after March 15th everything stops thinking about skiing and more about summer. The bazillions of dollars in operating costs can't be justified. Go hike! build a jump or something.

People lose interest in skiing when the weather gets nice, Blackcomb is open till may 30th and then you have a glacier to ski june and july, its not that bad......

surfing at tofino is damn cold, only fun if you can warm up every once in a while by returning to the beach.

the retarted thing is is that all the marmots live on the backside of the least used chair on the mountain. it sucks. alot.

i'm no biologist, but i'm pretty sure that if there's still 6.5m of snow those little furrballs aren't gonna come out of hibernation ....

Yeah, Aspen/Snowmass closes in April because of elk migration and thier forest service permits, but sometimes Aspen Mountain will reopen on weekends and sometimes Snowmass will open one lift in the summer on select weekends.

it will probably take them longer than normal, but they will dig their way out and they will run around (no where near any spring runs...) like furry brown road spikes(run marmots) and be all endangered and the like by our sharp metal edges.

This. A lot of tahoe mountians closed super early. But they can't do anything about it.
A lot of mountians (vail resorts for ex) have to choose there closing date before they even open.

My opinion is that it's a bunch of environmentalists making uncalled for rules. We can't let nature (in this case little rats) run our lives. If they really wanted to do something about it, just let them raise a bunch in a zoo or something.

Go kill the rest of em so there's no reason to protect them and then there's no reason to close the mountain

a lot of mountains close early for environmental reasons. most of the major utah resorts are on forestland and are made to close early, the only exception is snowbird because the land is privately owned.
it sucks, but really its not a bad reason. be nice to mother nature

I dont know much about marmots, but they might come out from hybernation (SP?) around this time and if people are skiing in their habitat it will affect them. Snowmobiles, chairlifts and skiers do have an impact on the area which is around them.

Insurance policy runs out like Mar. 1 for us I think, then again my mountain is like 500 vertical feet with like a base of 9 in. so it closes right on time.

I hate the forest service when it comes to closing down mountains
All times are Eastern (-5)
