almost unrelated, but simple mathematical structure has always astounded me. the fact that humans have develop a structure of quantities- which is rather abstract to begin with if you think about it- that is extremely basic, yet can perform a massive number of complex functions just baffles me. this is what i think about in calc class instead of taking notes. like what the fuck did they do before numbers existed???? some societies, like remote tribes in south america, still don't even have numbers in their language. obviously they know what 2 things look like, but not being able to communicate in words that there at 2, or 3, or 8 of an item yet still function as a society is incredible.
wow...reading that back, i completely feel like i got out of hand on a tangent that does not relate to the original thread that much. my bad ns...
I always think about how humans have had to invent basically everything around us at one point or another (besides nature). We're pretty fucking crafty.
Skiing. Have you ever stopped and pondered, holy fuck, we are simply gliding with wood on our feet?
We are taking advantage of the complete lack of friction, and strapping wood to our feet, and sliding. Maybe stupid to you all, but when you step back, mind blowing.
Humans are a stupid lot. Someone once told me that skiing was started by miners. In the winters they would put planks of wood on their feet and shred down.
1) Spill drink on phone

or Norse people developing an efficient way to travel across snow, and that evolved into effective ways to travel downhill across snow, and the rest is history.
Ancient scandinavian settlers and early peoples of europe needed an effiecient way to carry things or transport people/things across snow a long ass time ago. It really didn't take long for someone to decide trekking across flat tundra areas was lame and started giving downhill sloped shit a try. Turns out it caught on and wa-lah. Skiing was invented.
