Seriously, that's a big decision. One my cousin just made half-assed against my pleas to do it right... And now he has a broken arm, leg and is still missing his kneecap- so please listen, as your very fucking life and physical abilities depend on you not just thinking it's a "meh whatever" decision. Also just buried a friend who crashed his two weeks ago so I'd hate to just say "Fuck yeah, get one and start draggin' knees!" because in all honesty if you ride long enough YOU
WILL CRASH OR BE HIT.
Consider how much experience you have. Ridden dirt bikes or hitting this cold? If you've never tried it before, get a dirt bike first. Get used to it. If you really do love it, go take a beginner course like this one near where I live.
Once you go through that, go buy your streetbike, then go back for their next level. No matter where you choose, they WILL have a next level (and most likely a few beyond that too, so ask!). I took the PVriders advanced course in the rain on my GSXR750K6 which was very informative.
Do all that and you will have the tools to avoid letting others kill you. Welcome to the rest of your life. Riding is like skiing, only everywhere. Best. Feeling. Ever. Honestly even with several of my friends dying/getting fucked up for life on them I'd still never give it up, that's how awesome it is. Oh, that and $20 in gas will last you a week if you're just cruising around.
That said, I just have a few things I'd like to say with you if you do go all the way.
DON'T show off to girls. You will die. It's the kiss of death. YOU WILL DIE.
JUST PULL OVER if the blue lights are right behind you unless you have a 4-deep escape plan, a full tank of gas and you left your plate home on purpose, capiche?
DO NOT EVER put another dude on the back of your bike. EVER. Just don't do it man. It's not right.
Good luck dood.
