Can cops bust a party cause of a tip?

so my friend is throwin something tonight. his house is wayyy up in the woods, and the driveway is super long so theres no chance of a noise complaint or a cop driving by on chance. however, these is this super annoying kid who wasn't invited and was making a big deal about it. then some kids (who were coming) were being cocks and talkin about it like right in front of him to piss him off. anyway, the annoying kid is the type of kid who would like call the cops and tell them he knew there'd be a party with underage drinking at XXX address. i doubt he's going to do that, but on the chance that he did, is that enough to allow a cop to come snooping up this kids driveway wayy up in the woods and ruin everybodys night?
im wondering if i want to just chill at home with my gf..

no man like the cops can't like bust a party without a warrant and like don't answer the door cause like the cops will just go away and stuff. def. go and finger blast your gf in the driveway.

Not true at all.

If they get a noise complaint and they come to the house and bust you, they will come in if they want to and they will fine you if they want to. You just don't fuck with the police, they have all the power in any situation.

That said, you might as well just go, I mean chances are there won't be a noise complaint and who the fuck calls the cops because they didn't get invited to a party or some shit. I think you're probably fine.

They DO NOT need a search warrant or a noise complaint to enter the house. If they see suspicious activity, even as something as small as some cars parked outside of the house, they can knock on the door and force you to open it and let you in, or knock down the door. This is because it's classified as an "emergency" situation. Enough kids have died of alcohol poisoning/drunk driving from parties that the cops have a "responsibility" to check it out and make sure everyone is safe. Learned that in my law class last semester.

If they walk up to your house and they can't hear anything and don't see any visible alcohol or anything illegal in the windows they can't go in.

Simple... put a chain across the beginning of the drive way.. make sign, that says no trespassing.
they will be forced to call you from the street.

If you are all inside the house with curtains closed and no sign of drinking the cop cant do shit. In order for the cop to enter the house they either need consent by someone in the house or probable cause and a search warrant. A tip alone is only considered reasonable suspicion.

i was going to say this EXACT thing. except put in very fine print "you will be fined $500,000" my uncle did that, and a guy trespassed. except it was actully 10,000 on the sign. but my uncle got that money.

The tip will give them all the probable cause they need to enter and search the house. That being said, nobody is going to call the police because they didnt get invited, because that would ensure that they would never be invited to any parties ever again.

this happened 2 weeks ago to some of my friends. some bitch called the police and the police went to the house (it was actually a hunting cabin in the middle of the woods so no noise complaints) and forced them to open the door. there was about 30 something underages given out.

i think if they come to your door they cant force you to open the door. if they do come go to the door, open it and step outside with them and close the door because then they cant see anything and that also insures them that you arent going to let them in. but the only way they can really bust you is if they actually witness any underage drinking or anything else..

but i maybe wrong

My friends party got busted off a tip. Someone called the cops on her because they didn't like her and the cops called her parents.

you seriously dont have to answer the door unless they have a warrant. They won't, because a single tip isnt enough to establish probable cause to obtain a search warrant. you should look up the corroboration required on an affidavit to obtain one, theyre like 20 pages, are insanely thorough and are not going to bother for some little party.

they can come up to your door and knock. don't answer, turn off the music, tell everyone to shut the fuck up and the cops will have to leave because they dont have a legal right to be anywhere further than your doorstep. they can only come in if there's an emergency like it sounds like someone inside is in need of help or if some illegal shit is wayyy too obviously going on

Yea the cops may show up, if the party is REALLY roudy. Like were talking 100+ people jumping out of windows breaking shit causing a lot of problems. If their is a chance people will get hurt, the cops will ask the owner if they can "clear" the house, they will probably bluff & say that you can get fined of some shit. Just politely tell them that you have everything under control

in all honesty, you should be fine. This kid sounds like an ass and probably won't do anything because it won't benefit him.

But cops can use damn near anything as probable cause. If they want to, they can deem a bunch of cars parked outside as being probable cause. And if they are particularly sneaky, they'll run the plates of the cars, and if its registered to an underage kid...well, then you're probably fucked.

And no, not opening the door won't help. If they see through the windows that there are a lot of people inside, they can deem it to be a fire hazard. (too many people in a building not meant for that many=fire hazard.)


Really though, go for it, and don't worry about it. If it happens, man up...it happens. My bet is the cops would shoo everyone away, and tell you that if they have to come back soon, it's not going to be so easy for you.

But yeah a cop could bust the party because of a tip.

Our senior class party was out in the middle of a pasture on my buddies property and the sheriff was tipped off by the school counselor that there would be underage drinking...it got busted like crazy...such a fun night that was 80 kids there and only 2 got caught, because they were already passed out.

If the cops do come just don't open the door, if you open it you are done and might as well sacrifice yourself and tell everyone to run.

in canada, cops can bust a party if there is a suspicion of underage drinking, and most of the time when cops bust parties they just kick people out, they don't charge anyone unless they are rowdy.
Who gives a fuck about if a joke rats on you, kick his ass on Monday, i can help ;p

Last year in Golden, BC, my friends had this space set up just off of the forest road going up a mountain, relatively close to town. They'd have DJs and lights and everything fun to make a good bush party.
Funniest thing about it is the cops would know about it, and have a road block on the way up (you can drive or walk). They'd just check the drivers to make sure they weren't drinking or overpassengering (BC law), and then let you continue or. Or if you were walking, they'd check your IDs to make sure you were of age. We'd walk up, carrying a box of beer, get our IDs check, then continue on.

They'd bust all the high schoolers that show up, but would be friendly to everyone else.


Just be nice, make sure there isn't a fire ban going on or anything. If you have to move outside, move outside. Clean up, etc...

yea cops dont need a warrant, they just need probable cause which could include a tip from that kid or a noise complaint. And if you refuse to comply with them then you can be arrested so i would say... do what ever the cops tell ya to do even if you dont want to

google "rights when confronted with a cop", its crazy the amount of people who think that when a cop asks to search that you have to say yes. you can say no, and if a cop doesnt have a warrant you dont even have to open the door.

IF A COP ASKS YOU IF HE CAN COME IN ITS BECAUSE HE DOESNT HAVE A WARRANT OR MEANS TO COME IN, IF HE DID HAVE EITHER HE'S COMING IN ANY WAYS

i don't mean to be a debbie downer but the cops can do anything except for searches under their suspision. So if they do get a call from this "annoying kid" they could come check it out and say he never called or make an excuse. i'm sure it won't happen though. have fun and enjoy the party man.

and a prime example of what NOT to do. isn't it great how you were told this would work but there's not one case of it ACTUALLY happening? want to know why? because if a cop shows up to a house because of a noise violation, they're not stupid enough to be like, "oh it looks like no ones home, welp i guess we're just going to leave!" for any reason a cop gets called to the house, a resident of the home has to talk to the officer.

Does it matter? if your underage, drinking is illegal, end of question. I don't think it does you any good to determine your rights, because, in the end, a cop will do whatever the hell they feel like doing.
