Different opinions on pow riding

Pow is the ultimate skiing experience. 'Nuff said.

wtf you talking about, have you ever skied the trees with fat skis ?

those soft fat reverse camber skis like  ep pros were made to jib the trees...

I like it up to the knees, but if i can go deeper i do. skied powder almost up to my chest a month ago, damn it was hard to turn and stuff but it was funny ass hell. and dont wear tall tees while skiing powder.

Just thought I'll give my 2c on pow skiing. I lived in Japan for the past 7 months and it snows consistently  right throughout the season to the point where pow day is just another pow day. I know criminal thing to say...Feb and Jan we had 1! day without precipitation.

Anyways, here are the different pairs of skis that I ride and my opinions on them, Dynastar Huge Troubles (115 underfoot flat with no camber) in 185 and Liberty Genomes (140 underfoot reverse camber)  in 194, Rossi Ghettos (78 underfoot) in 175 and Rossi World Cup SLs 65 underfoot.

Little bit about myself, Im 5.8 weigh 75kgs an ex FIS racer for Russian Junior National who decided to stop racing and start coaching instead.I am now working in Japan and Australia/NZ coaching and ski instructing.

So, Dynastar Huge Troubles( the pow ski from "Turbo") in 185 were quite a surprise for me because I was expecting a really soft playful ski where I find them super super stiff so its more of a big mountain weapon rather then just a pow ski. Because of that stiffens it didnt rise as early as I expected a 115 ski to do.  115 underfoot with flat camber was soooo good in the pow it felt like it was just enough float but not so much that you just only skimmed the top of the pow.  No camber was doing wonders for trees aswell, with landings I found that it was just enough to punch through the pow gradually to soften the landing.

Liberty Genomes in 194 were outrageous I didnt find them all that usefull at all it just felt a little bit too much. In the trees and down the cliff lines they were loads more flickable  than any of the mentioned skis here.  They were easy to turn because of the reverse camber but the enjoyment from riding pow was for me disturbed by the fact that u just sit at the top of it. However, by having that 140 with reverse camber makes fly down anything through the pow on ridiculous speeds which was pretty cool.  Overall I thought it was just way too much  underfoot.On the big landings they felt super stable sometimes they didnt go as far deep into the snow and felt like a little narrow ski would have made the landing softer.

Rossi Ghettos with centre mount were crap in floating and rising compared to a proper pow ski but that feeling of the snow rolling over your whole body is just soo good.  I often took them out for couple of laps just to get the whiteroom and consistent pow choke going. Still, incredible fun however for anything serious its way too narrow and you get stuck in anything depper than 10 inches+.You also have to lean right back if you want to have any speed at all. Normal camber also makes you work heaps more for change direction.

Rossie World Cup SLs I think is one type of ski that will ruin your pow experience, 65 underfoot with dual titanium layers do not give it any chance of float or rise and u just end up gettign stuck EVERYWHERE.  And you dont end up getting fast enough for the snow to be rolling over you like with Rossie Ghettos. Overall...waste of time n pow.


Bit of conclusion about my findings from skiing different skis.  In between 120 and 95 for me was the optimum amount of float and fun combined with good agility and speed. Anything under 80 is a pain in the butt unless there is some serious rocker on it. Anything over 140 for me (!)  was just way too much of float and not enough deep. Oh yeah and race skis r shit :D for pow.

I thought the lone opinion on pow riding is that it's the motherfuckin' tits.

the t-halls suck in the pow! plus if ur riding t-halls they are probably center mounted which makes it even more difficult! Early rise in the tip and tail is the way to go! Liberty Double Helix

It is just because people wanted to ski differently. When people skied 70mm skis in pow, the only type of pow skiing that existed was slow, deep, bouncing S turns. That is all people could do, but it is what people liked, and what they wanted.

Pow has;
up down control as well as side so side
Snow bounces upand hits you and it feels epic
u can land flat and be like aaawwwhhh yeaaahhhh.
