If you're just beginning, definitely buy a hardtail. Buying a fully right away will make you thre laziest, sloppiest rider... the type of guy that plows over shit and gets tossed frequently.

this, i learned on a hardtail, and my riding improved so much when i got on a fully. when i had both, i used to go back and forth to keep myself on my toes. best i ever got at riding was when i would switch between them on the same trails.

I used to be mad into. Never got into the slopestyle/dj scene, I just like going downhill as fast as possible and doing some flowy jumps.

idk, just my input. he said he wanted to get into it alot this summer and he's looking for a good downhill/xc bike, my hardtail works fine but i would much rather have a fully for the stuff around here.

neither of those bikes are downhill/xc bikes, they're freeride bikes. If he wants a good bike for XC and downhill get a Giant Trance

have you ridden either of those bikes to give you the authority to say that? and yeah the trance would work too but i haven't tried it so i cannot reccomend it.

Yes I have. The faith was too big for me though but it was obvious that it was NOT designed for XC. The enduro would manage pretty decently but it's an expensive bike. I used to own the Trance and it's a great pricepoint fully if you don't get the top of the line build. I used to ride Porcupine Rim on it in Moab,UT (11 mile downhill) and I would pass people. Such a nimble bike.

i started DH on a freeride bike, and i think it made me that much better by using less suspension and getting used to that type of riding without a big, heavier bike.
I went from a Kona Coiler 07 to Stab Deluxe 08 btw.

i started dh on a specialized demo then i broke on of the links... but start with a front suspension then move on up the ladder. even thought im not a big fan of specialized get a rock hopper or something

anyone wanna buy a mongoose boot'r team 2010 for like 3400

never ridden, like at all. I got it a while ago and no i need to pay for a new car im getting so its looking like i wont be able to ride it and its not a very practical bike for me considering i already have a decent DH bike aha

I'm thinking about starting to look for a new bike for 90% xc and maybe start getting into beginer/moderate downhill type things eventually but i havent dabbled in much other stuff than single track trails in our foothills. I think I would like to get a 29er and am demoing one tomorrow to compare it to my dads over decade old trek hardtail frame (with updated components ) i've been riding since last summer. I want a quality bike at a fair price that will last for years. The pricepoint im looking for is definitely sub 2k and ideally around 1k, even lower if possible.

Just wondering if anyone had any recommendations

A 29er probably isn't the best idea if you want to start riding technical tracks or start to get into downhill. I would suggest going with a secondhand 26" trail bike and then decide if you want a bike more suited to DH or XC (or maybe stay with an all mountain bike?)

a decent freeride bike for under 1000 eh... i think your best bet would be to look at some of the for sale adds on http://www.pinkbike.com/ in the buy/sell section. If you're just getting into freeride mountain biking, DO NOT start out with a full suspension bike. They will make you lazy. instead, get a good durable hardtail and progress on that and learn the fundamentals, and then after riding that for a while you can upgrade to a full sussy.

ahaahah I did the same thing except it wasn't that much vert. I was like My friend built a trail up this hill. Aw can't find it. shit i'm lost. turns out I was on the wrong side. He didn't mention that it started at the end of the road going down the other side then turning back to were i started from.

Norco had a demo fleet at my local trails last night. Got a chance to ride two new bikes from them.

First was the Shinobi, a full suspension 29er that had a 140mm fork and 120mm of rear wheel travel. The best way to describe it was that in 5 years time, I would LOVE a bike like that. Right now though, it just did not fit my riding style. The bike was stupid fast on ups and flowy singletrack. On the flipside, it had some difficulty on tighter bermed switchback downhills and just was not playful. It did not feel inclined to flick around turns, or pop off terrain undulations. The big hoops just wanted to stay glued to the ground too much.

Then took out a 6" travel Range, a 26" AM/enduro bike. Much more my cup of tea. While slower uphill, it was much more playful and agile.

Overall though, I guess I am stoked on the fact that I demo'd two bikes, one that costs close to $5,000 (Range) and the other close to $3000 (Shinobi), and did not find myself dreading going back to my trusty '05 Cannondale Jekyll that I picked up for $600 used and put a new fork on last spring. The Range was a little better, but certainly not $4000+ better, and much of that increased performance was a result of the hydro brakes (I'm on cable discs on the Jekyll) and a shorter stem (which is coming in for my bike later this week.

Gotta a question for all you bike guys. So today my friend took me biking for the first time in 4 years. and it was super fun i realized that i havent bought a bike since grade 5 and should probably get a new one. Id be looking for a bike that i can ride on dirt trails, cuz thats what we did today. Just has to be a decent bike used is super ok and looking for something anywhere from 3-600 bucks (used coure) and i was wondering what faithful old ns'ers thought. My bud recomended a norco katmandu or wolverine.

Nothing real serious just something to do with friends, dirt trails nothing to crazy, we live next t o the rockies maybe a lil out there. Small jumps etc. Looking for a great noob bike.

save up $800-1,000 for a nicer hardtail bike and dont' narrow yourself to one company. to to a local bike shop and chat up the guys there too.

Thanks for the advice! Yup thats my friend recomeneded a nicer hard tail exactly. Ill probably buy used just because its cheaper and not a big deal to me. Itll be used for just screwin round with friends
