Digital Line Across Photo

Ya I just realized theres no way you'll be able to see the line only on a large size.

Yay I screen captured this image of the line. I hope this isn't a sensor problem cause I just bought my D3100 like a month or so ago.

why were you zooming in on his ass far enough to see that anyways?

Haha I actually just got a new lens so I was checking for color fringing like everywhere in the photo. The only reason I took a screenshot of the kids ass was because you could see the line the clearest there. Even though its across the whole picture.

Could be your sensor. Take some more photos against a white wall or something to look at it more, maybe email/call nikon.

Ya I actually did just take a picture of my ceiling and the line was visible. I actually just called Nikon and I emailed them the pictures and they said it was a sensor defect. So I'm shipping it out tomorrow. Thanks for the help though!

Sorry to bump a dead thread. I just want to vent a little here, I sent the camera out and Nikon did a full sensor replacement. Now, a few weeks later I start seeing the line again, but this time it's a red line. Looks like I'll be sending it out for a second time. I've already outgrown my D3100 and if I had cash I'd easily buy another camera body. Just because I've actually been getting a good amount of photography jobs lately and my D3100 isn't cutting it anymore. Oh well. Looks like I'll be shooting a whole golf tournament tomorrow with a defective camera. I don't have a back-up body or any other options.

That sucks man, I've never had this problem before. Maybe you're really unlucky or maybe the low end bodies suck, who knows.

Ya I know. Could it possibly be a low end body thing? I'm just thinking, I shoot everyday around 80 pictures a day. I've done a couple of golf tournaments at about 400 pictures each. A bunch of cancer walks. Award ceremonies, sporting evets. Could this just be too much for my little entry level body? I'm definitely going to be upgrading soon just because I've already outgrown it I just can't afford it right now. I mean, I'm a 16 year old kid and I'd like to make photography my career.

Definitely not. The sensor shouldn't see any wear and tear. This shouldn't be happening with a camera of any price.

Alright well thats good to know. Still though, do you think I should upgrade if I'm going to be doing events and such all summer? Personally I feel like I've completely outgrown the body and I need something with even better high ISO performance, weather sealing for sure and a magnesium alloy body would definitely be really nice. Plus I definitely don't need any of the soccer mom features or anything of the D3100 as I've shot manual exposure from the day I got my camera. I just personally think I need one geared towards more intermediate to advanced photographers. Would you agree or not? I'm serious though because sometimes I just think things to convince myself to buy something new and better. If that makes any sense, but this time do I really need it? Personally I think I do but I'd like to know everyone elses opinions.

The quality of your pictures will likely be the same under most scenarios. The way you shoot will also probably not change. Really, it will all be pretty similar. Are there any lenses or flashes you've been wanting instead? In my opinion that would probably lead to a lot more new and exciting options.

That said if you've been shooting enough and your current camera is having all these issues, it wouldn't be a bad thing to have a new reliable body and a back up camera, too. And there's no lying that sometimes a shiny new toy is enough to get some motivation to go and shoot. I can definitely understand the feeling of wanting to upgrade from an entry level body, but at the same time you'll realize afterwards that it doesn't turn out to be some huge, life-changing event which will suddenly transform you into a pro photographer. At least that was the case with me.

This. I can get the same quality pictures out of a D3100 as I can a D300S (spent a lot of time on both cameras). If I had the money, I'd upgrade from my D3100, but flashes and glass are way more important. Using a cheaper camera can help you out with your skills as well. Not as many AF points gets you good at tracking subjects, a slower burst improves your timing etc.

Thanks for giving me some good info and food for thought. I definitely know that the quality of my pictures wouldn't change as I wouldn't expect them too whether I'm shooting with a D3s or a D3100. As everyone says "It's the photographer not the camera" and thats definitely true considering I shoot all the tournaments at my local country club and the owners are very impressed. This may sound like a dumb and ignorant statement but personally I'm not a big fan of flash. The only flash related thing I can think that would be beneficial to more my artistic side of photography would be an off camera flash set up. As for lenses go the only lens I've been thinking about purchasing would be a 35mm f1.8 or some fixed focal length lens. My 70-200 f2.8 has been suiting me well for sports so far this season.

I have been shooting a TON for about the past year. Since people are now relying on me for events and such thats why I was thinking of buying a pro body and keeping my D3100 as my back up. I definitely would like to keep it as a back up. I know a pro body (or even an intermediate body) wouldn't turn me into a pro I just think it would make my job a lot easier. Today standing out in a downpour of rain I was thinking it would be nice to not have to worry AS MUCH with a weather sealed body as I had my D3100 wrapped up in a trash bag at a golf tournament today. Even if I did have a weather sealed body I would still wrap it up, I would just not have to be as paranoid. Buying a better body wouldn't be anything that I did too soon but I can definitely see it being useful in the near future as more jobs come in.

As Steezemonger said the D3100 is only making my photography better with the slower burst rate making for better timing etc. etc. Thanks for the help guys. Don't get me wrong I still love my D3100 and would definitely love it as a back up.

If you're gonna upgrade bodies wait until the D400/D800/D4 come out.

Sounds like you have pretty good reason to buy a new body! Go for it, the next tough question is which one.. (can't help you there, I shoot Canon.)
I understand your aversion to flash. I agree it can be really shitty (really, really shitty) when not done properly and a good off camera setup is difficult to manage and get good at controlling the light. Tis a whole other animal to tackle, but unfortunately it's sometimes necessary. Anyhow, good luck with your new cam search!
