After finally finishing a book I put off reading by half a year, I started to think about the act: are books fading as an art form with the surge of the Internet and other media? At least in Finland, though literate, roughly 1/5 of boys who finished grade school this year could not pass a simple exam that measured the ability to create text. I've also seen and heard that a regular, young person is way less likely to have read that many books at all compared to past generations.
I've never been a book glutton, no Sir, but after I started thinking how many books I have read,
I came up with 112 books, discounting autobiographies, compulsory reading and factual books.
Is this a small amount, average, large? I know girls who devour books two, three a week, but I want to know from all demographies on NS, what's your number and do you enjoy reading books over something else?
My favourite book of all time is Filth by Irvine Welsh.
Of course, i'll probably value/like super freakonomics more since it's more up to date and deals with current issues. The chapter dealing with the whole teachers changing test scores actually helped me out and contributed to my list of ways teachers can be evaluated before being tenured.
me too. the only books i've ever read have been for school, and that was before i knew how to fake it. so far i haven't read one book in college. i like books on tape when i have time.
I don't really read as much as I would like to, I think the only things I have read this year are the bourne books, slaughterhouse V, and catcher in the rye. I'm too busy with music and school to be reading. Overall I've probably read around 75. I've never been very into books, mostly because my time is dedicated to practice.
are we talking adult level novels only, or young adult as well as adult?
I have read countless books and short stories... but I haven't finished a single one since December. I dunno what the ski season did to me.. I guess it made me intellectually lazy...
books. One sense high school. A damn good damn long book that will make you think everything over and over and over. SOME poetry is the shit! SO one in three years
Audiobooks changed my life. In production here at the facotry, I can go through 5 decent books in a week. There is no substitute for having the feel of pages, finding a old book tucked away in a bookcase or returning a book to your friend after a road trip with noticibly more sand, creases and earmarks than when it first exchanged hands. Go books!
Probably at least 500. I read a lot. Sure, lots of them are comic books and kids popular books, but not all by any means. I think two of the most recent ones I particularly enjoyed were Monstrous Regiment and Going Postal, both by Terry Pratchett. I've also been reading the first Dune book recently.
man, this is a real good question. when i was younger and in high school i read a lot. now that i'm in college though, i feel that i spend my time reading short stories, poetry, and articles. i still read a book every week or two, but i feel and notice a shift towards online content now more than anything.
I used to read so much when I was in middle and high school. I've definitely slacked off, however I've started to get back into it again. If I had to guess at a number, I'd probably say 250-300 books.
