What's a good video converter?

So I need to convert a bunch of videos and I'm not sure where to find a good program any Ideas?

For some reason the videos I uploaded will not play sound when I open them with quicktime, but if I open them with VLC player the sound works. Even after trying to convert them with stream clip i have the same problem. I don't get it.
