NS! Help me pick out a longboard for my little bro!

My little brother is 10 and as a reward for not getting expelled from school this year my mom is going to get him a longboard, I'm picking it out for him. I'm spending the summer with him and will be teaching him how to longboard. I'm not sure what board I should pick for him.

He is around 4'8" ish and is kind of chubby, he doesn't really have any balance or athletic abilities (he still can't ride a bike or swim, but I will also be working with him on). He just needs a basic longboard to learn on and if he picks it up then he can upgrade. I want to get him one with sweet graphics too. I was looking at the Never Summer Norad and Assault but I haven't really looked around too much.

So NS, what longboard should I get my little bro?

alright, since he is fairly small, he is going to want a fairly narrow deck due to his relatively small shoe size. also keep in mind the length shouldnt be over the ~35" mark.

never summer makes quality boards, which is contrary to what many people think (they are even made in the same factory as icelantic). however, get him something fucking awesome like a landyachtz board. if he likes skating, he will be stoked on it, and if he doesnt they are extremely easy to sell, as the new line just came out.

check out the carbon mummy for cruising (might be a bit wide)

or the switch for a bombproof deck that can take some abuse.

further more, landy decks are pretty cheap and you can buy decent completes off their site.

i bet he would like this one, i'll definitely keep this one in mind. i don't know how well he would do on the switch though because he has no experience

yeah the carbon mummy is a sweet deck, but the switch will be a lot easier to ride. its got a dropped platform which makes pushing easier and will give less leverage over your trucks, inherently making you more stable.

however, you cant go wrong with any of those boards. best of luck!

true, i have a feeling though that he would feel uncomfortable with the dropped platform. i'll have to let him try standing on my friends board with a dropped platform and see if he likes that. Thank you!

I agree completely, its like the perfect small board.

Also the Original Apex 34 would be good though the trucks a little weird to get used to. I love em but a lot of people feel their too twitchy.

My friend has the Norad. Fun board that you can't go wrong with. Why not just go downtown and see what the MRKT skate shop's got/suggests? The guys in there are really nice.

lol! a neme would be mega overkill for a kid under 5 ft. its one of the widest decks on the market. however, i owned one for a year and i have to say it was dandy... odd thing is i just picked up some 70mm Centerset raceforms 0_o

i personally like the loaded boards. My first board was a piece of shit Bodyglove, walmart buy i think. Rode the hell outa it and was better than all my friends with supernice boards. I would get a basic sector nine cruiser size and see how he does then upgrade. if hes seriously this unathletic this could honestly be pretty difficult.

Yea I'm a fan of loaded boards but this will be his first longboard and I don't even know if he will really pick it up or not.

He doesn't need anything too fancy since this is his first board and he is quite the destructive menace. For example he got a gameboy for christmas a year ago and he literally snapped it in half a week later because he couldn't get past the first level of any of his games.

if that's the case, just get him a sector 9 board. they're cheaper, made well, and are generally designed for entry level riding.

Ladera makes nice boards for a reasonable price. Got it as my first board, still have it 7 years later and get pretty regular use on it

Definitely sector 9. When I would sell to people at a longboard shop back home, we usually would try getting people on something less flexible for their first board.

My first board was a sector 9. I got really into it and later upgraded. You can't go wrong. : )
