you can llook at like king of style, its not more of a style comp than any other big air, well superunknown, you dont have do be unknonwn to win

Superunknown is cursed with the expectations from Tom. It happened that the best park skier around broke on to the scene through Superunknown, so now everyone is dissapointed whenever a Superunknown doesn't become the next greatest thing.

That said, I would have liked to see it go to someone less well known. Sure, not that much may have happened as a result of his opportunity at JOSS, but clearly Level 1 knew about Sig's riding prior to the contest. What's the point of having a contest to bring out all these edits when they could have called him up anyway? If they like Sig's riding that much, they should have let him come to the shoots like all the other well-knowns and given the SU title to someone who hasn't had those opportunities.

I think people need to actually go to level 1s website and read the whole article about superunknown. Berman explains that its really hard to be "unknown" to the online ski community, due to everyone and their mother making edits. He basically said he picked the best rider to fit the movie and i think sig was the best choice.



Superunknown isn't the same as it used to be, hasn't been the same since tom won. But i believe that just happened because skiing started to blow up more online and now there are TONS of kids who are mad good and really haven't won anything big, like sig, who are "unknown" but have been around, ya know?

I agree with this 100%.

In '03 when this comp started—unless you competed at the premier level (X, US Open, etc.)—kids, even those doing pro-caliber tricks with style, were mostly only known/talked about regionally. In the last 5 years the proliferation of self-produced edits/footage has EXPLODED. Meaning, that pretty much any and everyone with a handful of hammers has posted footage in an attempt to attract sponsors, or just to get a little recognition.

I've never been to Quebec, but I know a dozen ams from the region that are murdering shit...5 years ago, none of us outside that scene would have any fucking clue what was going down up there. True "unknowns", and I'm talking about kids who are at the level to be considered finalists in this comp, are pretty much non-existent. Sig DID compete in JOSS, but the kid didn't have a major film company contract...in my opinion, that's the only valid disqualifier that actually makes sense now a days.

It's in Level1's best interest, as well as our's, that the winner be someone that will contribute to this year's project and hopefully for years to come...I think in that regard Sig is a great choice. Was he my pick? No...but, at the end of the day, the talent level is so insanely high that personal preferences have become just that. I've no doubt that Sig will step up and kill shit in whatever opps he's given as a result of this contest.

Now, if I were Level1....I'd dedicate a week or so of one filmer's time to film a mini-movie of all of the finalists each year and put that bitch on i-tunes for a lil' revenue bump...haha

he is really steezy, but I am afraid he wont be that good on hudge sprig setups. Think about it, he filmed in JOSS for two weeks and the only thing he even bothered putting in his SU movie from a big setup is a corkish 7 from the JOI-jump. So if he can´t do anything sicker then that in two weeks in JOSS, I don´t really things he can pull off to much sick on the massive spring jumps.... They are quite different from the medium line in Breck.....

Level 1 should look into renaming the contest. The whole concept of being superunknown is pretty much out the door anymore. Most of the kids in finals are known to all the people on NS, and unless it's someone that crawls out of the woodwork and really is unknown, there is always going to be people that bitch about how such and such isn't unknown, this guy is and should have won, not to mention there will always be controversy between guy number 1's supporters and guy number 2's.

i think youre somewhat right but it's not just tom.. i mean corey vanular was the first winner. who are some of the others? brogan, mike clarke.. skiing's so young i feel like maybe we're just getting to the point where kids dont break out the same way they used to

yeah the KOS thing is so true. look at all of the edits that are made to get into it. park, urban, small shots of bc. all for what? to get into a spin to win contest where everyone was throwing dubs with high mutes like it their job. and kevin rolland won that comp, a skier with the least amount of "style" IMO.

/rant on KOS.

sig was in joss. he won superunknown. stop crying. get over it. PLEASE.

But how is this any different than how they pick anyone to film with? It isn't, which is why Superunknown has lost some of its flair.

As for it being difficult to find truely 'Superunknown' contestants, nobody crawls out of the woods to become the greatest freeskier ever. There's always going to be some people familiar with everyone. However, I hadn't heard of Logan before he won last year. I think I might have seen 1 or 2 edits of Niklas... but anyone who even remotely follows skiing has seen JOSS videos.

I'm aware that they chose Sig because he'll make the best edition to the movie this year. However, if they were interested in keeping Superunknown's special reputation as the place where kids can blow up, they should have chosen someone less well known and then filmed with Sig in addition.

JD Zicat won one year and where is he now? Hell I can guarantee that most of the kids who joined this site past 2008 have never even heard that name before and JD is still an incredible skier.

Also anyone who is saying that they have not made a good pick since Tom, Logan Imlach was the perfect pick for last year. He actually contributed to Eye Trip and was an awesome contribution to the Level 1 team.

i cant see how people are pissed because of the pick. i would love to see Sig Tveits huge 540's and 720's in pow and his insanely smooth style in urban and his effortless dub 12's in the park. i havent seen a dub 12 that effortless. Austin is extremely tech but his style and as smooth as he is, cant touch Sig Tveits style.

So happy Sig Tveit won and an extremely good choice by Level 1. I would also love to see Cedric DP get invited to some trips with Level 1.

Bellemare is good at skiing, I've seen a couple of edits on him on the youtube, he can do like 450 on and stuff like that. I think he should cut his hair tho, they are way too long.

If a flip up is your idea of creativity....well, we have different ideas about that there topic. Not to say it wasn't technically impressive, but I would never point to that as a creative trick. People have been flipping in and out of jibs for 10 years...3-4 years ago, rodeo 4's on to fd's were everywhere. With cannon boxes/rails being built in basically every major park, and kids getting super comfy rodeoing and mistying out of them, this trick was inevitable.

Sig is the man both on and off the mountain

First of all, silky smooth style its pretty damn special. He has a big bag of tricks as well.

Second, hes a nice guy, never met him but he'll facebook chat me every once and a while and see whats up. It's been a bit since I last talked to him, but honestly one of the best ambassadors for the sport.
