My previous recommendation was based on the fact that you have an HP discount. I've had one HP that now belongs to my brother and it admittedly has had some of the typical PC problems after about 2 years, both because of Vista but also because of the construction.
If you're looking for a PC I would peep Lenovo and Asus, I've also heard good things about specific Acer and Toshiba models.
Just find something with specs that you like, a solid construction (hold it in your hands) and Windows 7. I can't stress enough how much more efficient, safe and intuitive 7 is over Vista. I've been using it without a firewall or third party malware/AV program, only Microsoft Security Essentials and it runs like new still (crosses fingers). You have to be seriously, like SERIOUSLY, retarded to fuck up a Windows 7 computer with MSSE installed. And if you're still worried (re: ECB) just dual boot Linux or OSX and you can watch all the balls in the ass pron you want.
As a student I appreciate the relatively low costs of PCs compared to Macs of similar power. I won't rule out a Mac in my future, but I recently installed Linux and am liking it so I think I'm actually moving in the opposite direction from OSX.
