I went on a bike tour last summer from Seattle to cannon beach, OR. It was somewhere between 200-250 miles.
The first day we took the ferry across Puget Sound and rode ~35 miles out past hood canal. It was pretty nice but we got a late start so we had to ride down the side of a highway at night, and we rolled through an Indian reservation and some dogs started chasing us. I took this shot right before the sunset.
The Second day we rode 70 miles, it was all pretty flat but it we had a bad headwind so it was pretty tiresome. The third day it fucking DUMPED rain all day, and we were going through the Olympic foothills. We pulled 40 miles of 1000' elevation gains and losses. It was the shittiest day of my life... Words cannot describe how pissed off and cold I was. We met this guy who was doing trans america too, he was super chill.
So then the last day we were only going to ride to the Astoria bridge but it ended up being beautiful out. We ended up riding through this giant valley with hawks calling across, and there was a big marsh to one side, with dead trees covered in moss on the other. We pulled 90 miles that day I think.
So then we got to cannon beach, wandered the beach until the wee hours, got drunk, peed in the ocean, and all that good stuff. We spent two days there and then bused to Portland to take the train back to Seattle. Bike touring is a great way to get a unique look at places, and its really easy to stop and look at stuff unlike a car. If you're in good shape you can ride about 80 miles a day which makes it pretty easy to cover a fair amount of ground in a few days.
