Order of operations: PEMDAS
Parenthesis
Exponent
Multiplication/Division but multiplication comes first if possible
Addition/Subtraction but addition comes first if possible

1. (9+3)= 12 P
2. 2(12)= 24
3. 48/12= 2

I'm sure i will never convince the 288 crowd, but for what its worth you can also use the distributive property and come up with the same (correct) answer

48/ 2 (9+3)

48/ (18+6)

48 / 24

In mine i made a typo but everyone knows what i meant.. I put 48/12=2 but i meant 48/24=2

and multiplication & addition does not come first, you work left to right, just like you read. but who are we really kidding here, you probably don't do that very well either, do you sport?

funny story

today in math class my friend and i both entered it into our calculators the same way. different calculators though

anyways his got 2, mine got 288

so i have really no idea how this works

if you distribute it, you must distribute everything

after all it's: a (b+c) = (ab) + (ac)
so you must distribute 48/2....
a = (48/2)
b=9
c=3

a(b+c)
= ab + ac
=((48/2)*9) + ((48/2)*3)
=(24*9) + (24*3 )
=216 + 72
= 288

its not 48/(2(9+3))

Subtraction
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Addition again
Possibly exponents, but we'll wait a little bit
Multiplication
Parenthesis
Pi
Exponents

The answer is Pi, judging by step 9.

If you knew anything about math you would know that multiplication and division as well as addition & subtraction are the same thing therefore neither can have precedent over the other.

say I want to divid by two

4/2= 2

but if I was doing it inside an equation like so by your rules I could jump a step up and just multiply by 1/2

4*(1/2) = 2

same goes for

4-2 = 2

4+(-2) = 2

okay, so they come out to the final equation of:

2(a^2-ab)=1(a^2-ab)

then they fuck up.

they are then saying

a^2-ab = 1, for them to get 2=1

try solving a^2-ab=1, there are no real numbers that work.

it's like saying there is an equation x=2, now I'm subbing in x=3
oh no! 2=3!! what are we to do!

if you work it out,

a=0

and it works juuust fine

so do you divide first or multiply first. the calculator always goes left to right in the case that multi[plication and division are together i think. i could be wrong but i think multiplication is first. so i go with my first answer

48/2(12)=x
48/2*12/12=x/12      -divide both sides by twelve to get rid of the twelve
48/2=x/12
576=2x      -cross multiplication
x=288
