this, and since division comes before multiplication left to right, 288 has to be the answer. you were switching the order of multiplication and division and not following PEMDAS.

no man, as soon as you have a number, say 'c' and it's beside a bracketed value
 example:

c(x+2)

if there is another multiplication or division to be done (something on the same level of operations)

say c(x+2)/4

it is always expanded inside the bracket before the next operation.

it's just nomenclature.


you'd never have

2(4) / 2(8)

and solve it

2x(4/2)x8
2x2x8

you'd always solve it

Lets make the 3 equal to x.

9+3 is obviously first, so 48÷2(9+x)

now, solve both equations for x

48/2(9+x)=288

and

48/2(9+x)=2

actually fuck it I can't even do this without knowing the correct order. This problem is fucked, and why rockets blow up when launched

Afeld you are correct. I am an engineer, I am good at math. In order to get 2 you must add in the parenthesis like so 48/(2(9+3)). without:

48/2(9+3)
48/2*12
right to left
24*12

you gotta be fucking kidding me, division and multiplication are both in the the same step of the order of operation process. You go from left to right. Meaning you divide BEFORE you multiply. Thus getting 288.

your pathetic brah. In order to distribute the 2 you must first evaluate (48/2) then distribute, therefore 288. the division sign links the two they cannot be broken.

48/(2(9+3)) is not equal to 48/2(9+3)

first is Parenthesis
second is Exponents
third is Multiplication and Division, left to right
fourth is Addition and Subtraction, left to right

you cannot just distribute the 2. if you wish to distribute you have to distribute a 1/2 not just 2. you cannot multiply by 2 because 2 is in the denominator, remember that word, I know its big, denominator 3rd grade. so it is actually a 1/2.

48/2(9+3)
48(4.5+1.5)
48*6
288

okay, I'm switching sides on this one.
after careful consideration, this is the only way is could possibly be done to give one specific answer:

let's bold this up

48÷2(12)

now, separate each individual part into brackets

(48)(÷2)(12)

now, this is the important part: a way of looking at any (÷x) is to multiply by it's inverse, hence (1/x)

so

(48)(1/2)(12)


288!


now, this is absolutely flawless. this is 100% the correct answer

the brackets dont just dissapear when you add up whats inside them you have to get rid of them by multiplying them by whats outside the bracket

yeah it's fucking stupid anyway. you'd either see a 48 / (all this other shit as the denominator) or you'd keep the consistency and throw in a / and X sign or more brackets to separate shit so it isn't ambiguous. cause it's really just (48/2)x(9+3)..

Its 2. No questions. PEMDAs. Parentheses are first so you mulitply 9=3 by 2 wich equals 18=6 wich equals 24. then you divid 48 by 24. its not hard...

as in, you'd absolutely expand into brackets first then divide

I mean. what the hell. this is grade 10 shit and I completely blanked.

then you just go left to right. 48/2=24*12=288

and guess whats on the outside of the brackets, sport? its not just a 2... its not just a 48.... ITS A 48/2 !!!!!! if you want to break that combo apart it becomes 48 * 1/2. you cannot just break a 48/2 into a 48 and a 2.

all you think its 2 you are actually doing 48/(2(9+3)) which is not equal to 48/2(9+3). plug both expressions exactly as written into wolfram alpha, does not fail.

No. Order of operations includes multiplication and division in the same category. So going left to right 48/2=24*12=288
