look at it like this. you are a blue collar worker working hard to make money to move out of the ghetto, so you put in 5 years of hard work and long hours all with creating a better life for your family in mind. so finally you find the right house at the right price in the right neighborhood and decide to move in. Its a great place to live the first year, nice and quiet, tree lined streets, etc. But then all of a sudden, the city council votes to transfer all the police in your area to a rich neighborhood, and put in section 8 housing in the neighborhood park. This leads to an increased crime rate, and a generally shittier neighborhood. and while its still not as bad as the ghetto you moved out of, you still feel as though you were screwed.

We tried but PC's park crew was too busy like I said previously whoring themselves out to the monster energy team and other companies and not giving two shits about the locals. And like grapeade said, I guess they drained their budget for the parks on the monster energy shoots. Park city really needs to step their fucking game up next season and start listening to the locals or they are going to lose a lot of passholders to brighton and the canyons.

Straight Tard'in so hard.... The point of the thread is Park City deteriorating year after year. Tom hardly even skis PC anymore, he has real jumps to hit while traveling. When he comes to PC he only fucks around on the baby ass jumps. PC's biggest jump is a 35ft table... And thats the truth. unbelievable.

Hey,
Just want to let ya'll in on a little secret as to why most resorts don't use salt/fertilizer on their jumps. A science lesson and take home experiment are included.

First and most obvious point. Snow changes states. As the weather warms up and the suns bakes the snow while the cold weather and ice beneath cool it at night, the surface snow begins to crystalize. (next time your skiing in late season conditions, reach down and get a handful of that snow and look closely at it) The longer this melt/freeze cycle carries on, the larger the crystals become. As such the jumps and takeoffs that once were hard, packed snow are now hard packed ice that develop a slush layer on top as the day progresses. The warmer the day and the greater the use, the deeper the slush layer becomes. There are two ways to stay on top of this. One is to continually re-expose the hard layer beneath. This causes the jumps to deteriorate slowly over time, becoming shallower and flatter. But there is still a layer that can be rebuilt onto by hand with old slush at night so that it freezes again. This is useful for takeoffs but not for jumps as they are huge and this would take forever.
The second point is that if you push snow onto the jumps at night with a cat, you must groom them. When you groom a jump it softens it automatically (yes, if its cold they refreeze, but never to the same depth that they would of they were hand groomed) Therefore since jumps have more mass than takeoffs, they are generally allowed to deteriorate longer than a take off.
The other option to re-exposing the hard layer of snow beneath is to use salt/fertilizer. This hardens the jump/takeoff well but only for about an hour.
(Here's the experiment. Make a jump out of snow, let the sun bake it on a really sunny day. Ski on it a bit. Get a feel for it. Once it's really slushed up, scrape off the top layer and ski it agian. you should notice a big difference. Once it's evening put the slush back on and smooth it. Let it freeze. the next day repeat the steps as before but don't scrape it. Smooth the jump and then apply salt. Ride it, it should feel harder. No let the jump bake for a few more days, without riding it, and see what happens)
Salt is like taking life support off of your dying girlfriend so you can have sex with her one last time. It may be sweet, but you essentially killed her prematurely. Ok, bad example but hopefully you got the point. Salt rots the core out of the jump leaving a slush layer that goes several feet deep. The jump is ruined as heat, air and water are trapped in the jump. There is no way to get the salt out and any new snow put on top just succumbs to the melting action beneath it and with enough salt the jump can't even support a cat.

All of this to say. SALT IS GOOD IN THE SHORT RUN AND BAD LONG TERM. Better to scrape the slush away and rebuild every two weeks than to screw it permanently.

salt is necessary and does the job when applied with the right amount. The method of "just scraping off the slush" really does not work especially for lips that are south facing. There would be rebuilds every other day. I've had to deal with closing jumps early @ 3pm and hand raking them since the cats / tillers could never manage it right at night, whether they would get to it too early, or it wouldnt even get below freezing at night. I will agree salt should be used sparingly, but to completely rule it out is a bit unrealistic. especially when you have to have stuff open and rideable for 7-8 hours every day. Anything besides just pure salt is definitely a no go.

Went to PC this year for spring break... Lucky it dumped pow for some of the trip because the park fucking sucked. I was so disappointed with how it was this year compared to years past.

yeah dude those jumps are fucking perfect how could you not get props for that? that's what separates park city from breck...the fact that you guys take the time to rebuild jumps perfectly every night and actually give a shit about your park. As for park city, their park crew can barely hit all the jumps and barely know what the fuck they are doing.

as i've said before, people move from across the country to ride this park. i moved across the country to ride one of the best parks in the world, and now its barely up to par with some east coast ones.

it doesn't matter how good it still is, when a mountain slacks off on their park it is disappointing to the loyal customers who live there.

I sympathize, to a degree, with kids back east or wherever that ride subpar mountains on a daily basis, but this whole "Be grateful, because we have it worse" thing is total bullshit.

Chances are that your shitty EC mountain doesn't tout itself as a top ten terrain park. Chances are you didn't relocate a few thousand miles away in order to ride your shitty EC mountain. Chances are that your mountain doesn't host major comps/film shoots. If Park City was "humble", low key, and didn't represent itself as a world-class top shelf resort, this thread wouldn't exist...the OP isn't bitching just to bitch, he's calling out PC for writing checks it's ass can't cash—and that fucking sucks, whether your mountain is worse or not is totally irrelevant.

But....yes, Breck jumps are the tits, and between here and Key, it's impossible to be bored or disappointed if you like riding park.

B.) Like I said, and you ignored, many of the kids at the U are there because of the hype and marketing devoted to touting PC and King's as a world class resort/park. The point essentially is that PC is guilty of "false advertising", and it's unfortunate that a lot of kids who are there day in and day out have been lied to or taken advantage of. Have you ever moved across the country? It's difficult, risky, expensive, and a little scary. It would suck to take that kind of leap only to feel like you've been lied to, or misled.

How much does a season pass at PC cost? I bet its cheaper than a pass at my home hill. I just find it hard to sympathize with skiers who complain about bad parks and this and that about their home mountain, especially when they are from Utah, one of the best places in the world to be a skier.

I really hate the "at least you don't ski my crappy hill" argument. In fact it really pisses me off. Most people I know in Colorado ARE NOT FROM HERE. We all chose to change our lifes, for good or bad, to try and live in a place with amazing snow, good terrain, and also...amazing terrain parks.

Trust me, I lived the shitty terrain park world, and moved to where it's promised to be the best. If it wasn't the best, I'd be complaining too.

i pay 500 bucks for my season pass to my home mountain in southern PA and i ride there almost every single day of the week. they had 2 jumps this year, a 20 footer and a 10 footer, and i had FUN with them. imagine that, having fun skiing on shitty jumps, or can you? why don't you take your fucking whining about your world class mountain and their "shitty park" out of here, because whether you like it or not, people don't get to ski great parks and mountains like park city. you are blessed so why don't you work with what you have.

quit with this "we're blessed" shit. i moved across the fucking country to get something better than what i had, not an easy or cheap thing to do. now pc management is coming up significantly short from what they promised.

i dont even know why so many east coast kids are jumping to pc's defense. this thread is about trying to get pc to step their game up, it has nothing to do with how terrible your local hill is.

If you havent skied PC this year just dont even post in this shit, because no one else needs to hear more "I ski on rocks, you guys should be happy no matter what." This thread is targeting PC's horrendous choice in re-prioritizing their customers and putting their seasons pass holders at bay. Since they dont see all the kids in the park with passes as perpetual revenue sources, they're obviously just maximizing their profit by creating contracts with Monster and other teams.. You can't blame them for wanting to increase revenue, but you can blame them for blatantly dropping their standards of customer service and prior years of quality park building. Hire some more fucking workers, increase payroll hours, do something for christ sake. If PC's excuse is that they wanted to make more money, they should be recycling that money directly into the primary parks.

to all you east coast/midwest kids complaining about how we get to ride park city...at least you guys have a park to ride, i lived in san francisco for the majority of my life until i moved to utah to go to college and before i moved here i got maybe 12 days a year if i was lucky so don't try to play the "im so deprived of a good park appreciate what you have" card because i didn't even have one period growing up.
