University of Utah?

Sooooooo here's  the dilemma. Utah was my first choice for about three years and I've already applied for housing. However, I'm totally torn whether to go out west for school, thousands of miles away or just stay here on the east. Pretty much I'm asking for your opinion on the school (yes....I've searchbarred a million times and i know people have generally asked the same questions) and if you really think it's worth moving out west for. Of course, skiing is a big factor but I'd also like to hear about campus life and living on campus since I've heard it's mostly a commuter school, which is kinda a turnoff compared to the other schools I'm considering, and about food, people, classes (especially if anyone is a language major or government), and etc. Also, where do most of the kids on campus have passes to and are there public buses that take you to any of the resorts?

Really the only reason I'm posting is because I'm getting cold feet and need some advice, and soon, before May 1st!

Also accepted to American University, UVM, and I'm waiting to hear from U of Maryland STILL somehow..

i'm literally in the exact same situation. i'm in maine and want nothing more than to go out west, but i may be limited for money, and i can't just travel out there for a visit. i'm looking for business schools and Champlain fits pretty well, and my brother goes to UVM. but i'm still fucked on the decision...

YES there are public buses to resorts like Brighton, Alta/snowbird. All students get a TRAX pass and access to campus buses for free. You'll have to buy a bus pass for long bus rides off campus.

NO we are not mostly a commuter school. The dorms are good, the food is above average for dorm-quality food, and the people are generally chill, although you WILL happen to find yourself amongst some mormon groups who are complete dicks. For the most part, It's a better idea to come here rather than UVM, especially if you want skiing.

It's a really laid back school, but it happens to have great Business, Chemistry, and CS programs. It's also the no.1 medical research school in the country. Also, it's out west. You'll love it out here.

even though skiing is sick on the west coast...proven fact people ball harder on the east and live large. None of that laid back lifestyle go hard in the paint till you got money to ur nips

If you are from out of the state you will love Salt Lake City and the skiing vibe. In state I may suggest against it but seeing you are a newcomer you will probably really enjoy the environment there. The U is a commuter school so it may not have quite that college "feel" you are looking for. But if you are pro active in finding things to do and people to meet, you will love it.

I am in the same position also. I am from maryland and its between U of U and Boulder. They are very similar schools to what i have see. My question is are the mormons really a big impact on others? And also how easy is getting to the ski resorts by bus?

plus you will have to put up with living on a dry campus...and 3.5% alcohol beer unless you go to a state liquor store...but it is a nice campus

not too worried about the beer situation as I'm not it's biggest fan anywho-- but on it being a dry campus is it easy to party or should I be worrying about getting an underage? not trying to do that again

You're not going to get busted unless you party hard in the dorms. Generally, if you keep you beer between friends and don't get too rowdy, you don't get busted.

I'm in the same situation as a few in here. To the person who said their from Maine but their brother goes to UVM... UVM costs about as much as U of U.

I'm a freshman at school right now, but I stated instate and went to University at Buffalo. Next year I'm probably gonna be back at community college.

My situation is whether I want to go to community college and get my grades up for a year or finish a two year and then go finish up a four year.

My only input is remember you're there to learn as much as have fun. If I was out West for school, I don't know if I would have enough control to not skip class for every pow day.

And lastly, whoever said if you're from out of state you'll love Salt Lake City... honestly I thought it was pretty shitty. The snow/mountains are good and all, but I can think of some other places I'd rather live

Ill probably be @ Westminster, and they are within walking distance.

There are Free busses that go up to every Mt every day, and students get discount passes to everywhere. Not sure about campus life, ill be a freshman, but Sugar House seems like a legit part of Salt Lake.

Im not for sure, but i think ill get a Canyons and an Alta Pass.

I'm sorta in the same siduation. I'm from Mass, and I know that I'm going out west for school.
I really want to study film production, Westminster gave me tons of money but UBC has a good program.
Question is: U of U or Westminster, or UBC in Vancouver?

you will love the U.. im from ohio and am finishing up my freshman year and I cant believe how much I have loved it out here. The mormons really dont affect you on a personal level, the only thing that they do is pass dumb legislation. They are actually really nice people and some of them are pretty fun to hang out with. Although a lot of people do live off campus, the U definately isnt the typical "commuter" school. Especially living in the dorms, you meet people around that have houses directly off campus and are always throwing parties. Just because they live off campus, doesnt mean that they arent involved and you wont see them. A lot of the kids just buy houses so they can party and are still really involved. I love it here, and im sure you will too

oh and the bussing sucks.. you will never really use it because it takes 2 hours to get from campus to the resorts with the bussing. One thing that is good though is the park and ride lots at the bottom of the canyons. You will make friends that have cars so dont worry bout it. And everyone rides different places, but id say the majority go to snowbird, canyons/PC and brighton.

hahaha are you kidding me? you'd be lucky to walk from the U to westmini is 30-40 minutes, it takes 10 minutes to drive, its almost 3 miles. Its definitely bikeable though.

Based on what? I mean if partying is really that much more important than skiing, then go to boulder. The only other legit reason would be if boulder had better programs for you makor, but driving 4hr round trips to skiing < 1hr round trips to skiing.

only 35% of freshman live on campus, compared to the 90%+ of most big universities..the U is a commuter school. theres no more than 2,000 people living on campus.

the dorms may be some of the best in the country, food is awesome for dorm food. its a dry campus but you arent going to have any problems with MIPs as long as your reasonable.

skiing is unbeatable, party scene isnt

i"m from NJ and was thinking of going out west or to UVM, but I never applied to any schools out west. I did apply to UVM though, but I'm at university of delaware now, they have a killer chem and bio program since dupont basically owns the whole state and school. plus i'm not that far from skiin in PA, and I have a long winter break to go skiing over, and the school takes trips to vermont and goes skiiig and stuff.

u of u is a joke academics wise- american university is one of the top private schools in the nation- vermont is a much more challenging university to get into

u of u is for the skier with semi decent grades who just wants to ski- if your looking to graduate with a degree that a national company will actually recognize u of u isn't gonna be your best choice- fun school yes- but education is an investment- if you are choosing a school based on skiing more power to you- but if you are accepted into much better universities- I would actually consider the schools rather than what was around the school


but hey- since its a much easier school to get into you might get some awesome scholarships

in comparison to american- yes u of u is on par with most major public universities but its not in the same league as american- not trying to hate on u of u but if the girl is going to choose utah over schools like md or american then obviously its more about skiing than school-

"skier with semi-decent grades"... how bout me with a 36 superscore and a 4.0 gpa through hs? i got into yale and ended up goin to the U because my program was much better there and the research is the best in the nation.. the best schools in the nation arent always the right ones, hell look at the top 25 in engineering and i guarentee you wouldnt think that half of them would be up there, hell i hadnt even heard of most of them

I wasnt saying that they were high, I was just saying that the big name schools arent always the answer. For me having a school that was gonna pay ME to go to school, would give me research opportunities all four years, be the best in the nation in research, AND be in the top 15 in my program seemed like a pretty easy choice. Plus once you factor in the mountains it made it a perfect fit.. You can find a school that is one of the worst schools in the nation and I can almost guarantee that they will be good in something

and a community college will do it for even cheaper- but getting you where you need to go doesnt mean shit if the school is an average school- an employer is going to look at a uvm and a u of u degree and know that uvm is a harder school to get into and maintain your grades- simple as that- and to the shocker guy what is your major that it is the number one in the country for?

you have to take into account that where you go to college has a major influence on where you are going to get a job and live after college. and the u of u is what you make it. sure you skate by and get an easy worthless degree but if you work hard you can get as much as you want out of it. i know a lot of people that went to the u of u and did very well in the professional world. oh and the beer isnt a huge issue its 4.0% abv in gas stations and grocery stores, and all of the out of state cheap pbr, coors light type beers are only 4.2% abv.

I said that the research at the U (medical research) is one of if not the best in the nation. My program itself (biomedical engineering) is somewhere between 5-20 ranked nationally but those dont take into account research most of the time. only about 1/4 end up graduating with a degree in BME compared to what started with it. You would also be surprised the kind of connections the U has (at least medically speaking).. I am going into my sophomore year and already have an internship locked down for the NIH cancer institute next year. Like people have said, your education there is gonna be what you make it, you major in Parks and Rec, of course youre gonna have an easy time, and not get paid as much. But completely saying that all of their programs suck and you cant get in anywhere simply isnt true.

you are delusional man. utah has some good programs without a doubt, but if you think it's top 10 for anything you are just lying to yourself. even top 20 is really pushing it.

but at the end of the day i agree with you, your school ranking doesn't matter that much, your education is what you make it. however, when you have a degree from elite university: Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Johns Hopkins etc., you'll have better opportunities available to you. the research and quality of faculty and resources at those institutions is unparalleled.

utah kinda blows...i live here. salt lake city isn't really a city its a giant suburb and when its the summer you realize you're in the middle of the fucking desert when you're not in the mountains. and the desert sucks. you kinda have to be an alcoholic in the summer to stay entertained here and that's not a good thing.
