Can we stop the sticky madness, please?

Ok, Doug - I know you wanted to make the record on the amount of sticky threads, but ski gabber is getting stupid. "Recovery", "day in the life of MAX HILL" and "Pettit switch 5 road gap" are not sticky worthy.

who's idea was it to make them sticky, and why? "we" want the video section to be revived, to the point where [Doug] said we should spam any video threads with Rebecca Black... followed by making video threads sticky and saying anyone who embeds music in a thread gets a lifetime ban...

I was under the impression that only hidden embeds get a permanent ban? I could be wrong though. Anyways, just put a normal embed of Friday in the thread.

Ah Daryl... I'm sorry!

I did blow it on the video section bombing. I'll admit that was a major /fail on my part. I did rescind that comment, and totally apologize to everyone.

Then had to do something about it because it got totally out of control. I started it, I ended it.

Now stickies out of control? Yes. Messing around with featuring forum content as an experiment? Yes.

Cool concept? Yes. Proper implementation with zillions of stickies? No.

I think somewhere in there is an idea we need to work with, but this isn't the exact proper way to go about it.

So does everyone absolutely hate the tonnes of stickies? Lots of forums actually do this all the time. Thats why I was curious to see how it would be accepted.

Do you have any idea of what you feel is a "maximum" amount of stickies that is acceptable at one time / in one forum?

Did you not like the idea of having threads which have good content in them bumped up to the top?

if the threads have good content the'll naturally get bumped to the top.

Yeah but the purpose of a sticky is to be able to give something a little more viewership than it would naturally get.

if there was a way already viewed stickies could float down the page like normal threads, that'd be grand. over time i've developed the habit of scrolling past them since nothing catches my eye as unread

I personally find that too many stickies takes away from the flow/vibe/feel/whatever you want to call it of the forum... the contest threads being stickied and "news" threads I think are good.

As for the good threads being stickies, it just doesn't sit right for me. I remember not too long ago you were proposing a forum that would act as the hall of fame or something along those lines. I think we could make that work, but as for the current threads that are really good, well... I guess I just don't have an answer for that. Perhaps we should discuss and vote as a community what should be done. All I know is that too many stickies makes less room on the first page for everything else, which to me takes away from the forum's overall content.

I think that NS is really, really unique and stands out in the commonly seen "phpBB" forum style. Those kinds of forum layouts are always cluttered with huge avatars, flashing text, gifs in the sigs, and to top it off, usually every forum has their own little Announcement/Read This sticky section on the top, which can get annoying if you visit multiple times a day/hour/second.

I say (if possible) make a simple "Sticky" contest list where the Team Update RSS is at the moment. Then all other stickies (max 4-5) would include what is really important to Sticky.

PS. To Hunt's Hall of Fame idea, the possibility of NS Like system could be used to create it. Say, 100 Likes ("Stomped!" maybe?) would get you on the list, but if someone came along and didn't Like ("Undershot..") it would drop out, but still all the time be visible in the regular forum, of course.

Agreed. Too many stickies is distracting. Ever try reading ski gabber on NS mobile when there is a bunch of stickies? Let me tell you, it sucks.

I feel like stickies should be for things that need to be seen over a long period of time and are always relevant. For example, the noobs guide to ns rarely gets posted in but needs to be readily visible to new (and some older) members. Similarily, 'How to ask for ski advice' should be readily visible in gear advice because it provides a lot of important info that hopefully cuts down on the crap in gear talk. If these things were to fall into the depths of NS it would be a problem.

Things like the recovery video may be important at the moment but has a very limited lifetime. If people care about it, it will continue getting posted in and will stay near the top. If it is falling to the bottom of the forum it is likely because people have seen it and lost interest/moved on.

Same with the sticky about the olympics - if people feel like discussing the olympics they will post in the thread and it will continually get bumped to the top. If it matters, it doesn't need to be stickied. If people aren't posting in it and bumping it to the top, why does it need to be seen? Having it stickied may in fact decrease responses because people will read it once and then scroll past it. If it is continually moving amongst the normal threads, people will recognize this activity and go back to read the new responses.

i REALLY hate it when i come up to a different page/forum and im about to click on a thread when an add pops up and slides the page down, causing me to click a sticked thread or some thread i didnt mean to click

I don't like stickies. If its important then it will stay on top. I think a different thread colour would be cool.

Good idea BUT the only thing is that we would probably get the typical "VOTE FOR MY THREAD" messages etc. and then the whole system is bunk. I think sticky decisions need to be left to the mods. I just realized that you may have been talking about a 'top threads' section, and if so, then the voting idea might work for that. Definitely not for stickies though.

Stickies should be threads that are always relevant, and occasionally a few that are time limited (i.e. stickied for a week or so to get views then downgraded). The time-limited ones would be news threads etc. Contest stickies can stay up for the length of the contest and a day or two after. That's just my two cents though.
