Olympic Announcement

Hey Newschoolers!

I just wanted to give you all the heads up that after years of delays, sometime in the next 24 hours the International Olympic Committee is expected to make their decision on the possible inclusion of halfpipe and slopestyle skiing in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Rest assured that no matter what the outcome (my sources are telling me that pipe is for sure, and slopestyle has a really good chance), we'll have an article in the news the second an announcement is made.

I guess my mind was set on the track and field style Olympics rather than the Winter version.

There is a large amount of countries that don't have the regular snowfall of the countries you mentioned. Just look at the UK (yes I'm biased, shoot me) and the recent results that they've had (Euro X Games).

I suppose you are correct. You can't compare moguls that happened 20 years ago, I've never really cared about the politics until now, as I'm more mature and able to understand it better.

I wouldn't know if the IOC and FIS ruined snowboarding, I don't tend to follow it. Sorry to be so blunt on that subject.


Whatever the IOC have decided will most likely change free-skiing forever and how our outlook is on it.

No no its all good man! You do bring up a good point, because lets face it the founders of our segment of skiing did so on a "FUCK FIS" basis. That was such a huge thing to split off from them...

I'm actually trying to get one of the Snowboardermag guys to come in here and give us some insight on how it went for their sport.

That would be a great perspective, we can speculate all we want but we won't know what will really happen till the first drop in of 2014. They already know whats up and can either calm us down, or make us worried.

I am sure there are ways to avoid getting caught, they probably know when they will be getting tested weeks in advance, just look at michael phelps.

pretty sure there are tons of drugs that you can be prescribed to that the olympics does not allow, like amphetamine, or a number of steroids. Even though it is hardly "performance enhancing" I would be shocked if the olympics hasn't banned pot

Dude, the Olympic Drug Committee (or whatever it's called) doesn't even allow inhalers if you have asthma, some cough medicines that contain Codein and so forth.

wasnt there a snowboarder back in the day who tested positive for pot but they let him keep his medal cus it isnt a performance enhancing drug?? im not sure if its true, just something i heard somewhere

How hard is it to tell? Jesus Christ, this is not you being drafted to war or similar, this is skiing getting more publicity and money in the industry and more athletes loving what they do and having a chance to score a medal/blowjob or two in the process.

I hear what everyone is saying about regulating and changing the sport of Half-Pipe Skiing. But, how does it really change it? Havent pretty much the same comps been run on the World Cup Circuit with the organizers from FIS? These are Pretty much the same way as Dew Tour and X-games is run. I know FIS and the reasoning behind the Newschool movement but, this is a new era in Sport that I believe is more influenced by athletes, Freeskiers, and NS, not judges and FIS.

Another question. Do you think other pros who will not be competing at the Olympics will be against this because it takes away from there skiing? if you are big mountain guy and only come out with edits and video segments will this take-away from your bottom line? Will Sponsors be more apt to put money towards an Olympian? Is that what Pros are worried about? I hope this hasn't already been said...

Imm so stoked on this, it deserves to be an Olympic sport and glad it will get the recognition it deserves.
I will be happy as long it doesn't play second fiddle to snowboarding, i want to see the same amount of coverage for both sports.

I also believe the snowboarders are required to have a straight air as their first jump. I hope they don't implement this aspect, it just takes away a jump from the athletes and does not allow them to showcase all the tricks they have to offer to the judges.

anyone know why they have to do the straight air? don't follow the snowboarding scene too closely

You don't see Duncan Adams actually winning anything with style now, right? Or AJ Kemppainen podiuming with such flow anymore, right?

Basically, it's all down the shitter anyway, so why not make the sport more recognized in the mean time.

If you have a medical exemption then yes you can use an inhaler as it doesnt give you an advantage over the rest of the field.

Are you a fucking idiot? The World Cup and World Championships in Ski Pipe have been run by FIS for years already. FIS is the damn organisation that wanted to get pipe into the Olympics, get your facts straight before talking outta your ass. I doubt that anything will change in how pipe is run and organised compared to how it is today.

And to the people saying "yea wel da olympic man made da snowboard make straight air compulsive dat so fuckin ghey yezzir" should know that snowboarders themselves wanted a straight air included, as to not spin-to-win on every hit and make a straighter stylish, which can be a difficult thing.

Nice to meet you I appreciate the Idiot comment. I didn't really have any facts at all in my post more my opinions and I still think FIS is gay. I don't like the World Cup and World Championships in Ski Pipe. I never said FIS is not the organization that wanted to bring in the the pipe I said I don't want them to have rule over it I would much rather see it go under something new. Actually, The FIS world championchips of slope and pipe went really well. I believe they judge it well. Everybody needs to stop worrying about freeskiing becomming too mainstream. Its already mainstream right now. Quit the lame-ass hipster elitism.
