Olympic Announcement

Hey Newschoolers!

I just wanted to give you all the heads up that after years of delays, sometime in the next 24 hours the International Olympic Committee is expected to make their decision on the possible inclusion of halfpipe and slopestyle skiing in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Rest assured that no matter what the outcome (my sources are telling me that pipe is for sure, and slopestyle has a really good chance), we'll have an article in the news the second an announcement is made.

i feel like park skiing in general is just too balla for the olympics! our sport is gona go back to skin tights and speedos! im still stoked though  =)

god i hope this happens. has anyone heard anything about sochi not even being able to be prepared for the lympics cause i know last year they were talkin about vancouver getting it again which i hope will happen

dude same i didnt care to much about the Olympics last year despite it being in my city cause their were no good events(not including hockey)like i would occasionally watch some moguls or something but tough to get hyped about someone throwing a backflip. however if it comes back im so going to see all the real skiing events.

any word about big air joining like i always hear about slope and pipe but yet to hear about big air my favorite event

when skiercross first made it big they were testing people for marijuana and kicking people out of events because of it. then one smart dude came along and said 'don't you think it'd slow them down rather than speed them up?'

they stopped drug testing. having said that i think drug testing resumed when it became a FIS event.

EPIC thread btw....cant wait to see how it works out.

IOC president Jacques Rogge says decisions on some new events for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics will be delayed pending the outcome of site inspections in the Black Sea resort. This inspection takes place on April 23, so please stay tuned and keep your thumbs up!!!

eh the more i think about the inclusion of pipe the less stoked i get. Think about it, instead of getting kids involved in the sport who are creative and passionate we will get what snowboarders got, a bunch of poser shaun white wannabe's. I hope skiing can keep its core feel after this

We aren't some kind of super secret club man. Look at all of your favorite skiers think about what you just said. Yeah it will bring some posers to the mountain, but all that it means is that the people who have been making your favorite movies, your favorite skiers, your local ski shops, pretty much everybody involved with the world of skiing will be making and spending more coin. And with the way that skiing has been progressing over the last decade, this was coming sooner or later anyways.

i dont understand posts like these. that shit is already happening. skiing isnt as "core" as everyone makes it out to be. i dont know about you guys, but ive noticed in the past couple years that, when i go in the park, the skier to snowboarder ratio is around 50/50, sometimes i even feel like there are more skiers. i dont know if this has something to do with the fact that i ski in quebec or what but its what ive noticed. and you're saying we will get a bunch of posers who arent creative and arent passionate; you dont realize this is already happening? i mean, look at all the kids out there who worry 100 times more about what theyre wearing and what others think of them rather than just having fun

This is my £0.02

As long as the IOC just stick with Pipe, that's enough, but the IOC and the FIS will regulate it too much as they have done already with moguls.

I hope the IOC don't bring in Slopestyle because it will just be spin to win and I personally just like watching it at Winter X Games, Dew Tour and other competitions.

My last point is that there aren't enough countries that have the number of athletes to competitively compete in Pipe, let alone slopestyle as well, but I guess that has always been the way with the Winter Olympics.

Huge day for the sport! Whether you agree or disagree with the sport being in the olympics, it is a huge day nonetheless and the exposure on the worlds biggest stage is massive.

Now the only think I would like to point out... is you can't simply compare it to Moguls. That happened like twenty years ago now... so its an unfair comparison.

You'd be better off to compare it to snowboarding halfpipe. Has FIS and the IOC ruined the sport of Snowboarding?

I'm not sure actually... I know one thing that has happened is there's countries that train their gymnasts to do all kinds of crazy flips/spins on a snowboard. They look wacky in the Olympics, but never go pro or take over the rest of the world.

I dunno... actually I'm interested to hear from a snowboarder what has happened with their inclusion in the Olympics?

I don't know about that, how many countries do you want?! USA, Canada, France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Japan, Australia, New Zealand... The list goes on, there will be a very diverse international field in 2014...

A HUGE day not only for freestyle skiing, but the ski industry as a whole! This could be the boost the industry needs to get out of the funk its been in for so long now...

Plus they still have two more years to train, meaning there will be more countries sending athletes. I think this is wonderful news for both the athletes and our sport as a whole. There is never anything wrong with more exposure. Knowing someone that has been an Olympian, it is one of the proudest moments of an athlete's life, and I think it's great that halfpipe skiers are now going to get to live that experience.

incredible day for skiing. i cannot wait to see how this plays out.

this is a piece of newschool skiing history. just look how far we have come, from hitting 10 foot urban rails and 4 foot halfpipes, to the olympics! i cant get over how dope this is
