Olympic Announcement

Hey Newschoolers!

I just wanted to give you all the heads up that after years of delays, sometime in the next 24 hours the International Olympic Committee is expected to make their decision on the possible inclusion of halfpipe and slopestyle skiing in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Rest assured that no matter what the outcome (my sources are telling me that pipe is for sure, and slopestyle has a really good chance), we'll have an article in the news the second an announcement is made.

Still somewhat ambivalent about all of this. But I think in the end it will be pretty badass if Pipe becomes an Olympic event (shit, I wrote a fucking essay eight years ago on why it should be). I doubt slope, as it is, gets that nod, but whatever.

Whatever event(s) makes it, it will be a pretty big transformation for skiing, let alone a milestone for what was the anti-Olympic/FIS reformation.

^Spot on. That many skiers won't compete due to this and therefore the Olympics will not be a true reflection of our sports best. Just think of slopestyle without B-Dog or E-dollo... They smoke down and are the smoothest, most innovative skiers around.

as someone who smokes myself, i can say that any skier who wouldnt compete in the olympics just so they could smoke pot is a complete and utter moron. I bet every pro skier who smokes would quit in a heartbeat for a chance to compete in something as huge as the olympics.

I actually think both will. I currently am taking a course on the history of the Olympics, and if this decision is anything like the vote to include Ski Cross both with be included, as they are relatively inexpensive to host and would get huge TV ratings. The Olympics want to appeal to the younger generations. Its an opportunity for bigger sponsors and greater profit. Freestyle skiing and boarding were the big ticket sellers in 2010, the IOC knows that.

Its more  a questions of how long they will be included look at ski ballet...

And unfortunately for Jamaica, the IOC doesn't really give a shit about their slopeteam, their are very few non-western countries in the winter olympics at a large scale.

So stoked for this decision...so much hype, hope it makes it through.
I think superpipe would be the best addition in the world, look what it did for snowboarding and its exposure. This could be the best thing for our sport.
In terms of filming, the people who buy ski movies will continue to buy ski movies in addition to watching their favorite athletes compete in the Olympics. The competition will add a whole other level to the drive and completely change the way people see freestyle skiing. Sponsors will also be dishing out tons of money to see their logo in front of a worldwide audience.

for sure. and im sure a lot of the snowboarders who compete in the olympics blaze too, yet they found a way to do it... i dont understand why these kids are under the impression that pro skiers are the biggest pot heads in the world and wouldnt be able to pass a drug test if their life depended on it

guys, pot insnt the biggest problem the IOC is worried about, countries find ways to cover way bigger things, if a guy smokes a bowl 3 months before a comp I dont think the IOC will make a deal about it

im guessing you dont want skiing to go mainstream. which is also my argument.
everyone loves skiing, but shits on the "little 12 year olds" when in reality they are the next generation of what we are now.

summary: olympics=lots more interest, especially with the younger crowd. for some reason people dont like that.

There's no doubt in my mind that pipe will be approved.

The only thing I see with slope is standardizing a course. Pipe is 22 ft tall, and a certain length. All skating events use the same size rink, except for long track speed skating. Although the racing and XC courses change (since you can't really have the exact same layout on any 2 mountains), I don't know how the varying courses of slope would be accepted year to year.

I would be stoked for slope as well, but i have doubts about it being included for 2014. If not then, then 2018 for sure.

I still don't understand why skiing halfpipe has been up for grabs. What James said, slope would be hard to create a universal course, so there would be a debate as to the hardest course etc.

I've got a little update for you guys, but keep in mind that NOTHING is official yet...

As expected, it sounds like pipe is more likely than not going to be approved, but based on what I'm hearing, it's looking like the decision to include slopestyle may be delayed for a bit longer. Reason being is that it would require a brand new venue to be built, so the IOC may want to have further discussions with the Sochi Organizing Committee about it first, so they can make sure that they can pull it off before giving slopestyle the potential green light.

All the Jamaican ski team needs are some water ramps and foam pits and only spend two or three months on snow. They already live the rasta lifestyle so many freeskiers idolize. they'd be the perfect up and coming team.

Errol (http://www.jamaicaskiteam.com/errol-kerr/) can hit jumps and already competes in ski-cross. Granted he's no jibber but I've seen him throw a heli or two...

Too bad he's kinda a tahoe local... but he has dual citizenship!
