 Hey guys, looking for a little insight. So im 16 and want money and im tired of asking my parents, fair enough?

So how can i find a job other than driving around and looking for places....

Like a website that finds local jobs i searched but found nothing..

help me? : )

think of places you wouldnt mind working at, like a ski shop or bike shop or something, and go ask if they are hiring.

I cant really think of a website but just apply everywhere thats close to you. Most places have an online application.

craigslist job section.
get a job landscaping - look at all the junk mail for this coming summer you're gonna get from landscaping companies and call the numbers asking if they are hiring.
go to all the big chain food/whatever places
i think monster has an entry level student section

if those fail, go around to local restaurants and business


if you have played baseball/lax/soccer and know the rules umping/reffing can be pretty profitable
i pulled about $1000 from umping last little league season

craigslist, newspapers. If you don't mind working hard look in the food service section. When I was 16 i got a job as a dishwasher for minimum wage and by the time I graduated high school I was cooking behind the line and making decent money. Kitchen jobs turn over super fast, which means they are always easy to find, so a little kitchen experience is good to have if you ever find yourself in desperate need of a job. Plus you will probably meet some hilarious/sketchy people, and find a couple cute waitresses to hit on.

Call up your towns rec center. I worked at the town pool club when i was 15-17 and now i work as a food runner at a restaurant. Summer camps are always a good bet. Open up your phone book and start dialing

sell drugs. If you know a family friend that is a pharmacist get them to hire you, take the drug test and enjoy starting at 11$ an hour and chilling in an air conditioned room all day. you have to send in a 50$ application for a license but it's a great thing to put on a resume.

got my first job dishwashing when I was 14--definitely the best bet. You'll learn that restaurants aren't what you thought they always were behind the kitchen doors and that there's a good chance they're full of scumbags who work and/or run the place. With that said, they're also really valuable in that you can move basically anywhere and have a much better chance of getting a job with restaurant experience. I'd recommend looking at the fancier places, and if you can deal with people/customer service you can eventually be a server and make real good money for the amount of work you do ($100/night is certainly not unheard of, plus minimum wage).

and like said above, the people you work with will make your job that much better. can't begin to tell the amount of ridiculous stories/situations produced by some of the nuts I've worked with haha........fully recommend it though

also, landscaping, golf courses, public rec center type places--go for it, though landscapers may not hire you if they don't think you'll be able to handle the labor

Thanks for this thread. I'm 17 and now that I have my own car, I need a job for gas and such. I just emailed a few places from craigslist but local places were few and far in between. I've applied at nearly every place with a new hiring sigh in the window in town for months and got nothing yet. Most places here are very proud to declare they drug test. Annoys me but saves me from wasting my time. I'm gonna go check the newspaper...

If there are any private schools near any of you, talk to them. Chances are they have work, whether its campus clean up or landscaping. Most pay well too. I am making $20/hr doing it..

Meh if you want a job the best thing is to go in and talk to them.

Ask people you know if they know of any jobs you could get. Get references.
Apply where people know you.

This morning I didn't have a summer job, I walked into a place I used to work and was hired on the spot in 10 minutes. Pays to know the people there a lot, having a reference is killer because then someone can vouch for you. ALSO, write up a nice resume, and write cover letters if you can. And don't be afraid to take that shitty job washing dishes or bagging groceries. Thats where everyone starts.

I've noticed a lot of places ask for resumes for simple, even fast food jobs. How can I go about writiing a resume as a junior in high school who no previous jobs?

you can list clubs, or extra curricular things you do in school. Any volenteer work that youve done. also list the skills that you have. Also list any references that you have that arent your parents.
look up an outline of a resume, make it brief but detailed enough so that the interviewer know a little bit about you.

Be creative, tell them what you have done.

Have you volunteered at anything? Participated in any ECAs at school?
Received any awards? Won any competitions?

Just put on anything you can think of that might look good. Include education, interests, hobbies, accomplishments, awards, etc.

A resume isn't so much a list of accomplishments as a quick summary of why someone should hire you that they can read in 30 seconds. Spelling mistakes and they get thrown out. Bad grammar, thrown out. If you follow a really generic, boring format, it'll get thrown out.

And remember, you have to present yourself well. If you get to talk face to face with a manager just be enthusiastic, talkative, and talk with them honestly. If you're getting into customer service they'll just want to see your social skills, the questions themselves aren't as important.

Ask your friends. Word of mouth is the best way to find jobs during high school. Ask your parents if they know anyone who hires high schoolers too, people who know your parents always hire you.

how i got my job at ski school (im 16 too).

-volunteered with the youngins, meaning i shadowed and helped an instructor in exchange for my 40 hours of community service for highschool. my instructor was the coolest guy ever too.

-got to know the school director who was a really cool guy, sadly he died this season of cancer. anyways he then knew that i was a park skier, and they had no park instructors so he encouraged me to get my certification

-got my cert. and he called me up later that day to hire me on the spot, i later got park cert.

so now in the winter i choose when i want to work/how much i want to work and make above minimum wage aswell as getting job experience working with kids and customer service. all without ever doing an interview or writing a resume.

pretty sweet. i just wish i could do it in the summer.

so thats my cool story, if you think you'd like to be a ski instructor i'd encourage you to do something like I did cause its not just a shitty fastfood mindless job, it can be fun too.

Also, relating to this, just quit smoking pot when you're job hunting. Lots more opportunities, and almost no one random tests, just entry. So you can start again after you get hired. It's not that big of a deal, weed's not addictive anyways, you'll survive :)

Take whatever you can find. I stocked shelves in a grocery store my first job. Definitely not what I preferred, but once you get some experience it will be easier to find a job. Be a good worker, and you will get good recommendations. If someone calls you to see if you can work for them, do it. I got a raise today, and I am pumped. The reason I got the raise is because I am a good worker.

Look in the classifieds, craigslist, go into stores and ask if they are hiring. I haven't read the thread, but noticed that it was made back in April. If you are still looking, its going to be hard, you need to apply in March / early April for summer jobs.
