I'm a noob... (questions)

So, I am going to buy my first DSLR soon, a Canon 7d. I am really familiar with how the cameras work in a videography aspect of it, but I have a couple questions photography wise and involving lenses.

-What are apature (spelling?) and ISO, and how do they affect your photo/video?

-Does the stock lens for the Canon 7d (18mm-135mm)come with an image stabilizer?

-What does f/3.5-5.6 IS mean?

-And for videography, what lenses could you recommend to me under 500 dollars?

I couldn't tell you about the canon lens although

ISO has some crazy latin translation, it affects how grainy and noisy your image is in a sense, it started with film because each film has a set ISO. The higher the ISO the brighter your image

aperture- is how much light your lens lets in this should be directly correlated with shutter speed as to not over expose your images, it also is your depth of field (f/) Wide open aperture f/3.5 = low depth of field, bright image
tiny aperture f/32= near infinite depth of field dark image

I do plan on getting into photography and stills more though so that's my reasoning with the 7d. It's either the 7d or the 60d, and I have enough for the 7d so why not buy the more durable camera which I could use for a long time coming. I understand that the T2i is an entry level camera, But I really am not entry level anymore. I knew what ISO does (ahahahah I should have said what it means :X)but aperture was still a mystery, but thanks anyways. +K

All of the technology in either of those cameras will be long since outdated by the time either one of them is worn down(unless you drop it or some other clumsy ass shit) but I would go with the 60d and se the money you save on lenses you'll be glad in the long run

it's a 15mm* and mostly video, cinematographic stuff. Skiing, possibly promotional videos, etc.

15-85 would probably be great for most stuff, you might want to invest in a better quality lens though, like a carl zeiss, I would also get a high quality wide angle lens(one with minimal distortion, NOT A FISHEYE, fisheye's are overused and boring the only good shot I"ve seen with one is by erik seo) but other than that 15-85 is a pretty wide use lens especially for someone who's starting

You start off with a zeiss glass, you learn on a zeiss glass thus you're set for pretty much all else, besides he said that he's not completely a beginner so he can figure it out

I am not educated about cameras, but I know how to use them very well. I have become the film bitch so I've used DSLRs all season, but I didn't take the time to figure one out. Now, with me looking to buy my own camera, I want to know about these things. Catch my drift?

And specifically, which lens company uses Zeiss? Isn't it Sigma?

zeiss is a glass company, they make all sorts of HQ glass shit, but also make lenses, they design lenses for pretty much all mounts I think the 60d is an EF mount

Stick with canon lenses for now, you don't need to step up to cinema quality lenses that cost 1000s of dollars.


There are a bunch of threads about lenses, but good quality lenses have a fixed aperture, aka no 3.5-5.6 bullshit and are at least f4 for zooms and 2.8 for primes. Canon also makes "L" glass which is much better than normal canon optics.

Check out a tamron 17-50mm 2.8 NONVC, canon 50mm 1.8, sigma 30mm 1.4, sigma 10-20mm 3.5-4.5 (ONLY LENS I WILL EVER RECOMMEND THAT HAS NONFIXED APERTURE) tokina 11-16mm 2.8 canon 70-200 f4L (or 2.8 if you wanna spend cash) canon 24-105 4L and these are just to name a few. Buy a lens based on if you want wide, normal or tele and then based on your budget.

What's your reasoning with the nonfixed aperture? And I'm buying a 50mm off a friend for relatively cheap. but a good prtion of those lenses are out of my price range, I was looking more of the under 800 range, but great help Evan, thanks.

The non-fix aperture lenses are just lower quality and then if you ever want to zoom while shooting your exposure changes. The tamron is about 400 bucks and the 70-200f4 nonis is like 500-600 bucks and that could be a good start with the 50mm 1.8. the kit lenses work they're just not the best lenses IMO.

I believe my mom has the 70-200 for her xTi, So I won't be looking into that, but I will definitely take a look at the Tamron. And with the mounts, The 60d would be compatible with all the lenses I said and you have said, correct?

Putting a camera on auto and saying the focusing isn't a big deal does not mean you know what you're doing. You didn't even know what aperture was...

Aperture is the size of the opening that lets light in through the lens. it controls your depth of field. lower aperture will have less depth of field than a higher aperture, meaning less will be in focus.

Also, its important to remember that a "better" camera will not make you a better photographer/videographer. It all depends on you.

Hahahhahaha I know, take a teenage girl for instance... But yeah, I'm a really creative person And have done a lot of photog stuff on my mom's camera and was happy with the turn out.

If I were you I'd go for a 1DmkIV with a full set of Zeiss primes. You sound almost professional, and that edit shows it. Having every shot out of focus REALLY impressed me, and your song choice was very original.

That isn't not knowing what you are doing, that could be never seeing that movie plus its just looked down upon not being amateur. Seemed like every movie company used the same songs for two years in a row at least aka Vanished by Crystal Castles (Pleasure Inc, Such Is Life) and Caged Bird pt. 1 by Zion I (Pretty Good, Everyday is a Saturday, and Refresh (and Jolly Rodger by Pirate Movie Productions, a snowboard movie)).

I know the kit lenses are garbage, ive owned one. and ive used a few of the lenses listed and the rest of my opinion is based on solid reviews and from solid forums about the lenses. Nice try on calling me out.

Actually if you were even partially unbiased you would of realized it was actually a legitimate and successful "callout." If you read just beyond what he said, its fairly apparent I'm right. He said he hasn't used all of them, just tried a few of him.  So go ahead and stop gargling if you don't mind. And why your at it, realize that dslr's aren't particularly "video stuff." In most videographers minds, including your beloved eheath, dslr's are childs play.

I'm not saying hes wrong, I was just asking. In fact, Ive owned/still own ever lens that he mentioned save the canon lenses as I shoot nikon. And I completely agree with what he said.
