Canadian Universities and Colleges - Where are you going?

McGill University - Arts (Economics/Finance)

Richard Ivey School of Business (UWO) - AEO
McGill University - Desautels Faculty of Management
Queens University - Commerce
University of Toronto - International Relations (Trinity)

I'd have a tough time choosing between Ivey/QC/Desautels but at this point I think I'm leaning towards Desautels if I had that choice. I know Ivey's the best for finance hands down but I'm not bent on becoming an investment banker just yet. I'd also much rather live in Montreal than London, and McGill's a target school for BB/MBB's as well so I'm not too worried about my job prospects.

Where's everyone else going?

i went to dal for kinesiology. i would highly recommend dal to people who love to surf, the beach scene, and a nice small, accessible city where everything is within a 10-15 minute walking distance from campus. not to mention the beer drinking scene. holy shit maritimers can hold their liquor. downtown is just patio parties and people crashing giant mugs of beer together with sweet ass celtic bands jamming popular tunes that everyone sings along with. it's honestly little scotland in downtown halifax and makes for unreal parties, especially come alexander keith's birthday and st patty's day..

- tunnels connecting every building
- high diving all year is so sick
- train and bus right next to res and main buildings
- Quebec right next door
- weekly rail jam sessions on campus
- more girls than guys
- triwinning

cons
- When the wind is blowing south you can sometimes catch a hint of U Ottawas stench

Kingston get fucking ROWDY. A buddy of mine is in Queens Commerce and Ive been down there for a couple jams... Great bars and great people. Kingston as a place is a shithole but the Uni/college kids + a good bar scene makes up for it HUGE.

University of Victoria. Majoring in geography.

Pros:
Very high girl to guy ratio, the island and campus has a super chill friendly vibe, and we have a rad fountain that everybody chills around. All sorts of amazing musicians come through here and play, and the clubs are filled with predominantly students (unlike the guido scene in van). And it's far enough from vancouver to be independent and distanced from back home, but close enough that I can go home in an afternoon if I need.

Cons:
they killed the bunnies... , and it's a pretty big effort to get to any good mountains

By the looks of it, you are a pretty smart guy. Keep in mind that AEO doesn't mean Ivey. Ivey takes applications after second year, which means many AEO students don't get in, and there are many open spots for non AEO students. Once you are in Western the requirements when applying with either AEO status or just as a second year student are essentially the same.

I tell you this for 2 reasons.
1. don't assume you are in once you get AEO, you still gotta work the first 2 years
2. everyone hates when kids go around in first year BMOS saying they are in Ivey because they got AEO status. Don't be one of those kids.

U of Ottawa for me, the only good thing about it is that Ottawa is an awesome place to live in the summer time. Next year I'm either transferring to Concordia or doing an international exchange.

@Anathema, Dal sounds sick and I loved Halifax when I went. I wish tuition wasn't so bloody expensive in NS or I would definitely consider going there.

Thanks for the heads up, I've definitely heard that but it's always good to get the reminder. Honestly right now my plan is McGill, if I don't get into business I'll transfer after first year.

Ivey's top notch for finance, no doubt about that. The thing is, I'm not bent on finance and I don't like the whole AEO thing so I don't even know if I should defer Western's offer for $300 ($600 deposit, $300 back) if I don't get notice by April 29th.

Looks like I'm off to Montreal next year?

This! So many truth's in the above statement. There are an unbelievable amount of kids who go flaunting that they are "in Ivey" in first year (its one of the most annoying things about Western too be perfectly honest). Other than that its an awesome school; good vibe, great bar scene, great women, NOT SO GREAT skiing. Boler "mountain" is a relative joke, and unless you feel like driving roughly 2.5-3 hours North to Blue Mountain area there isn't anything worthwhile around. There is an unbelievable amount of urban in the area though (both on campus and in surrounding areas). Overall it's an awesome school (and Ivey certainly does have a nation-wide reputation as far as MOS programs go). Whatever you pick your not going to regret it in the end.

I just got offered AEO Status (thanks for the heads up theJones & railbomber haha) but I'm still leaning towards McGill at this point, probably a bit biased but meh.

Anyone know how hard it is to transfer from McGill Arts to Business (Desautels) after first year?

you need a 3.7 GPA (80% and above) first year to transfer over to management. Not too hard if you don't fall behind with your classes and don't take anything too hard. By look of things, I'll bet you get accepted to Desautels. If not and you plan on transferring than make sure you take Math 122 and 123 next year. They are the only required courses for first year management, other than that you are pretty much an arts student first year. It's a shit load of fun out here though, you'll like it for sure. PM me if you want to know some good profs/classes before you register.

Another year at UofC for me.
Hopefully end it with a month-long primatology group study in belize. Then a good chance i'll be studying at bamfield marine sciences centre for the fall semester of the following year and then a conservation group study in ghana (I'm counting on them offering this one again because I missed it this year). Fit some basic ecology and archaeology field school courses into the summers and I should be able to avoid calgary as much as possible and be set for taking at least one winter semester off.
