OK can this be a discussion with opinions and insights not just bashing on e side or the other please.

My view on gun control: There should be a limited amount of control. I do not see any reason to have automatic weapons. Hand guns are a bit of a paradox, because while it can be an enjoyable pastime to target shoot them most are owned for protection. I am not necessarily against having them for protection (even though i never personally would) but the problem arises with careless and/or uneducated people owning these guns and keeping them under their pillow at night or in a hallowed out book. I will agree with gun control nuts there are too many accidents with guns especially hand guns and children, but with proper education and care, this would not be a problem.

I see nothing wrong with rifles and shotguns, they are instruments used for hunting. (lets NOT get into a hunting debate here) As for those that say it is a right for those of us in the US. I would agree that while it is a right, it is not meant in the same way as in was when it was written. Conspiracy theorists be damned but the government is not out to get us. (again lets not get into that topic any more than absolutely necessary)

Overall i think a great idea would be to have mandatory classes one must take to be able to purchase a firearm, posssibly even classes that require the whole family to teach children about guns and gun safety. I grew up around guns and never had a issue because my father taught us firearm SAFETY first and foremost, that should be the issue for those in gun control because even if you ban all guns guess what? the 'bad guys' are still gonna get guns to do bad things.

anyway a bit longwinded but those are my thoughts, how about you guys?

i once saw a chris rock standup where he said something like, they shouldnt have gun control, they just need to raise the price of the bullets to like $50,000. So when somebody gets mad at somebody else they'll have to save up their money to get a bullet to kill the person. Seemed reasonable to me.

Switzerland is one of the most heavily armed countries in the world. People there are even allowed to own fully automatic rifles. Crime in Switzerland is so low that its hard to record. However the Swiss enjoy a very stable social fabric so this may not be a good contry to compare with the USA.

And look at Britain. In 1990's (?) the entire country underwent a pratical cleansing of ALL guns, including match pistols and the beloved sporting shotguns. Since then gun murders in Britain have risen 40%.
I think the old saying is very true: If you outlaw guns, only the outlaws will have guns.

outlawing guns is stupid, but we really need more control over guns. true, a lot of it is our violent culture, but maybe the laws need to change to accommodate that violent culture.

I don't think we need more regulations on firearms, but more education. The last thing we need is more restrictions, its not like someone is going to use a registered gun to murder someone unless they are retarded. Its the unregistered sketchy ass guns that are used in crime, not the ones that have someones name attached to them. People bark up the wrong tree with gun control, they need to control people and not guns.

The saying goes 'An armed society is a polite society'. Anyway I got my first BB gun at 8 and I started shooting firearms and Rifles at about 10. I am a very responsible gun owner. I abide by the laws of transporting and discharing. My friends who would like to learn how to shoot I teach them gun saftey, proper handeling, cleaning, and shooting practices. I think lack of education is one of the largest overlying problems with guns in America. Outlawing guns will do very little to nothing except make them more expensive. Here in America (excluding Vermont) you need to take classes (every state is different) to have a concealed weapons permit which I think is a good idea. There are various rules in obtaining both pistol,rifle ownership aswell as concealed weapons permit. You cannot have ever commited a felony. You can not ever have commited a violent misdeamenor. You can not have been discahrged dishonorably from military service. You can not have pleaded insanity at a court hearing. Lastley you can not have had problems with drugs or alcohol. I think these rules are fairly sufficent. Marijuana is Illegal but it is hard to get? No, and if you outlawed guns they would be just as easy to obtain.

i think they just need to do better background checks on people they sell guns to. for instance, in 'bowling for columbine,' this bank gives out free guns to whoever opens an account. no background check or anything, just like that. so stupid. i mean they could be handin out guns to the next timothy mcveigh and wouldn't even knoe it.

The Truth: In the spring of 2001, I saw a real ad in a real newspaper in Michigan announcing a real promotion that this real bank had where they would give you a gun (as your up-front interest) for opening up a Certificate of Deposit account. They promoted this in publications all over the country – 'More Bang for Your Buck!'

There was news coverage of this bank giving away guns, long before I even shot the scene there. The Chicago Sun Times wrote about how the bank would 'hand you a gun' with the purchase of a CD. Those are the precise words used by a bank employee in the film.

When you see me going in to the bank and walking out with my new gun in 'Bowling for Columbine' – that is exactly as it happened. Nothing was done out of the ordinary other than to phone ahead and ask permission to let me bring a camera in to film me opening up my account. I walked into that bank in northern Michigan for the first time ever on that day in June 2001, and, with cameras rolling, gave the bank teller $1,000 – and opened up a 20-year CD account. After you see me filling out the required federal forms ('How do you spell Caucasian?') – which I am filling out here for the first time – the bank manager faxed it to the bank's main office for them to do the background check. The bank is a licensed federal arms dealer and thus can have guns on the premises and do the instant background checks (the ATF's Federal Firearms database—which includes all federally approved gun dealers—lists North Country Bank with Federal Firearms License #4-38-153-01-5C-39922).

Within 10 minutes, the 'OK' came through from the firearms background check agency and, 5 minutes later, just as you see it in the film, they handed me a Weatherby Mark V Magnum rifle (If you'd like to see the outtakes, click here).

And it is that very gun that I still own to this day. I have decided the best thing to do with this gun is to melt it down into a bust of John Ashcroft and auction it off on E-Bay (more details on that later). All the proceeds will go to The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence to fight all these lying gun nuts who have attacked my film and make it possible on a daily basis for America's gun epidemic to rage on.''

Well, the U.S. is violent. We are a much more violent society than Canada. We have a national obsession with guns and violence, just look at our movies. How many large, heavily armed gangs are in canada? none that could possibly rival the bloods or crips. If guns were illegal, we Americans would still be killing each other, but not as much, because there wouldnt be nearly as many guns around.

Ok, but what about all the accidental deaths that guns cause, not to mention all the manslaughter cases. Also the population has grown, and so has crime. Try making guns legal in britain. see what would happen to the amount of gun murders. thats just preposterous.

Bottom line, we need gun control in the US. No assault rifles, no handguns. Just rifles and shotguns, and make those very hard to obtain.

See thats a very nice idea but sorry it wont work and it also wouldnt fix anything. A violent society is a violent society. Guns arnt running around the streets killing people violent people are. IF a person wants to kill someone while a gun is an easy method there are a million and one ways to do it. I dont tihnk guns are the reason for a violent America I think its much deeper routed in American culture. Rap glorifies people who kill. War glorfies people who kill and calls them heros. Movies glorify people who kill. Violence is in everything we do. If they outlaw guns people will just use homemade bombs or homemade guns. Thats after the 100000 years it takes to get rid of every gun in America. Dont use the gun as a scapegoat for problems in America its the intent behind the gun.

I agree with most of the stuff above about needing more education. But some 90% of all gun related deaths are from illegally purchased guns. That statistic may be a little off, because I read it over a year ago, but it is somewhere pretty high.

I think the US needs to update their views on guns. Everything has come a long way since the revolution. There is not goign to be another revolution of the people because a few million hand guns is not going to be able to take down the US military. I think that guns should be able to be held for hunting purposes. For protection purposes it is stupid, if someone is trying to steal your shit, let them, you have insurance. And unless you are being hunted by someone, no one is goign to come into your home and try to kill you.

have you ever been shot at? Has anyone you know had their home been broken into and the person just shot them, without any reason? And how mnay women do you know who carry around firearms when they walk around the streets? Because I bet the majority of the people who carry concealed weapons are men. And yes, let the msteal your shit, much better than having your wife or kids or yourself shot in my opinion. I rather lose a TV than a life anyday, but maybe you're retarded. Insurance will reimburse you of any stolen items anyways.

And out side the house, why the fuck should I not be able to have a gun or anyone who has a clean record for that matter, self defense or not. And from the self defence standpoint, how can you just say guns are bad and we should not let people use them for self defense because they can always get back what they have lost. Is that true in rape, which is the reason the women I know have consealed weapons. You act like these are the guns that are responsable for all the crime and such, these are the guns that go their entire existance not fired outside the range, but they are there for protection. If the criminal underworld is going to arm themselves regardless of gun laws why can we not protect ourselves from them?

I think you missed many of my points. I said the majority of concealed weapon holders are not women. Also, many of these women most likely carry the gun in their purse. Next, msot rapes are actually surprise attacks or attacks made by someone the person rapes knows well and is already in a sexually tense situation and are used against their will, most of these cases, the person woman would not be able to get a gun to use it in time. I think that the self defense and awareness courses being taught at secondary schools around Canada are very useful, much more useful than guns in preventing rapes. It teaches how not to get into bad situations and how to defend yourself effectively if you think you are going to get raped. and again, YES, let the msteal your shit. robbers are not goign to shoot you unless you provoke them, if you hear someone in your home, gather your family lock yourself i na room and call the police. That is theb ets way to defend against robbers. Playing Captain Hero is just stupid and a good way to die. Most robberies take place when no one is home anyways. Everyone starts off with a clean record, even mass murderers. And you alread ysaid that most guns are not fired outside of the range, so why have them if they are not being used? There are better ways t odefend yourself than shooting the other person, most tiems you will only get yourself killed because someone who is willing to shoot is probably better experienced than yourself with a gu nand has a better firearm. What is a pistol goign to do against a machine gun? Nothing, just run. There are people who's job it is to defend you, they are trained, police and military, let them do their jobs and keep yourself safe.

I have one last reason why I should be able to have a gun, because I can, because we have a bill or rights and the second amendment that says that we have the right to bear arms, and it is no more obsolete then the first amendment. Thats all the reason I need.

And the problem is not with the housewives with the registered consealed weapons that never get fired, it is with the scum who have the illegal unregistered guns.

And, not that it makes a diffrence, I am a hell of a marksman.
