I know i should have uploaded this edit instead of posting it here but i didn't have time as i live in the uk (midnight now) and i need some sleep. any comments would be greatly appreciated especially from the great man himself as he does know how to make a sick edit! here is my humble attempt: http://vimeo.com/21616938
critique (just took notes as i was watching it, sorry if it sounds mean):
-not sure about the zoom in and out thing during the first song
-some of the focus pulls could have been smoother
-fuzzy shot at 3:42 should have been taken out
-too many songs crammed into such a short edit
-a lot of the same tricks over and over again, it gets kind of repetitive, but i guess its hard when youre not skiing on snow haha
-the shot with the car kinda interrupted the flow of the skiing and then there was one more shot and it ended. you could have picked the order of those better.
-try more moving shots, all of the shots in the edit were stationary
but overall i liked the feel of it. i would be scared shitless to do anything on your turf hills haha.
side note: why do you have a rode mic and youre still shooting with the kit lens?
I really liked the vibe that came from that but i just wasnt a fan of how it was edited. Way to much repetition of tricks. Like the previous comment, there where a lot of stationary shots and the focus pulls where sort of weird. what kind of tripod are you shooting with?
thanks for the feedback guys its really useful. I agree some of the focus pulls were shaky but this was mainly due to the fact that i needed some shots to set up and end certain bits so i just used whatever i had. Im glad you liked the vibe and i though it wasnt a bad effort for my first ever. o and im using a videomic with a kit lens as my parents got me the mic for my birthday and i dont have the money for any more lenses at the moment. hopefully will get some new ones at some point though. Also i see you point about the repetitiveness but as i live in the uk with no mountains the shots will probably get a bit repetitive with the limited features we can hit.
ya didnt watch the whole thing but def work on the pull focus's and dont over use them, not bad for a setup shot but seemed like you used too many of them. Also what are you filming on? you had a zoom in the beginning that seemed like auto-focus on a DSLR.
Work on some audio editing, too much background wind on some of the shots and heard a lot of "ok" like good to drop that should be taken out in post.
Take out repeated shots unless different grab or by a different person....or if its used as a cut shot.
Color correcting: if you want to get serious with editing you have to learn to color correct, a lot of the shots were fine the way they were but some could use a white balance, boost of whites or blacks to make the shots look crisp.
Hope some of this helps. You'll get there, I am still learning a ton every day I edit. best way to is just practice....make an edit, get feedback and reedit it several times.
Thanks for the feedback its really helpful. As i am new to editing i struggled a bit when it came to using final cut compressor and it took me couple of goes to make it work. I film on the canon 550d and im wondering what export settings i should have it on and what settings to put in compressor?
for best quality make sure your timeline settings are 1920x1080..you can check it by command+0 and that will bring up your menu for it.
That will give you the best quality, for exporting you will have to make some adjustments in quicktime conversion, i'd have to go back and look over my settings and get back to you
yeah not to bad...mostly skiing at plymouth on their park night, went to les 2 alpes at christmas which was good....what about you? still looking at exeter uni?
Sound took away from the edit rather than helping it, when you've got a lot of noise from the wind it's best to turn down the sound. Filming was solid though
