So I know, build-a-jib 101. I posted there but not every NS member reads those forums and I really could use some feedback on this idea I came up with today.
Hey guys I'm sitting here in my architecture studio waiting for my critic to come look at this stupid concert hall I am designing, but anywho I'm obviously wasting my time sketching things skiing related. Since my home mountain is now closed for the season, I've been contemplating ways to keep skiing all summer. I do have a small summer set-up ( basically a turf drop in with 2 8ft double barrel rails ) but I want to go bigger since I have some money. So what I came up with is an idea to build multiple 4ft ladders out of wood with PVC rungs. 4ft so we can fit them in a car, easy to carry, etc. Anyway, I figure we can make these pretty cheap, and then all we have to do is find a park with a hill, and lay them down end to end for an instant in-run. and then for the jump you can just bring a normal wooden lip with turf on it. So this is basically a summer set up you bring to a park. However, imagine if after the first rail which is still on the hill, you have a plywood landing area covered with turf, and then it goes back to another PVC inrun for the next feature. I'm estimating something like 1 - 2$ for each foot of the inrun ( based on the local price of 2x4s and pvc )and I have a few friends interested so I can easily make like 15 - 20 of these 4ft sections. Sorry for the long read, just wondering if anyone has ever done anything like this, or if anyone can see any glaring problems before I sink some money into this project. Also, I apologize for any spelling / grammer errors or just plain stupid ideas, I've been sitting at this desk for just over 24 hours now and my brain is partially melted.
so youd be hitting urban in the summer? or bringing your own rails to also put on the hill...im confused. if you are bringing your own rails that seems like a bit of a hassle...i think your money would definitely be better invested in adding to your summer set up. I just plan on making a few different pvc rails to hit this summer, they can easily be swapped out, or you can make the inrun/jump wide enough to put multiple rails side by side. it costs what like 15-30 bucks in materials to build a rail? (thats assuming you dont have scrap wood lying around) once youve got your shit all built you can hit it whenever you want and dont need to worry about transporting anything anywhere
i think its a pretty good idea, but i dont know if you even need multiple inruns between features. also, even though pvc slides nicely, i think pvc around actual ladder rungs acting like rollers would help you gain speed even better, because there would be very little friction. it does seem like a hassle to go to a park for this, but i guess for multiple options thats your best option
do u realize how tall park features are? a rail thats 2 feet off the snow in the winter is gonna be about 4 feet off the ground in the summer, have fun getting the speed and a big enough jump to hit that!
if thats even what ur talking about (bringing it to ur local mountain and hit their features)
i don't think it's really that stupid at all.
i say go for it. innovation comes from people fucking around, and you might stumble upon something great.
Thanks everyone for the input. Just to clear up some of the confusion, I am talking about bringing this set up to like a public park, and yes, bringing my own rails. It does seem like a hassle, but if I have like 5 or 6 guys with 2 trucks, I dont think it's that much of a price to pay for a day of having fun on something other than my small backyard set up ( which I can't expand due to a small yard + I don't live at my parents place anymore which is where the set up is ). I definately want to try this out this summer, might work, might not. Either way I think it'll be a fun project. Keep the input coming, it def. helps out. Also, if this gets up and running, anyone in the northern NJ / NYC area, we could have some sick rail jams haha.
That gave me an idea. Make a small kicker, nail on abit of turf, with some excess turf rolled up, and another roll, bring it to a spot, roll it out, get your bungee up and enjoy some urban in the summer!
Was this a bad idea? I kinda liked it, and if I can find some cheap turf, I'll sure as hell be trying it.
just make rails easily interchangeable. like same height, so you can make them longer, make different variations of kinks. all you have to do is screw and unscrew.
