Great Book Thread

Lord of the rings/ the hobbit,

Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthey
-About a 14 year old Tennessean boy who runs away from home in the mid-19th century and ends up as part of a band of morally corrupt scalp-hunters on the US-Mexican border. Brutally violent, lots of biblical themes, lots of moral play. I loved it. McCarthey is a bit tough to read though, he writes very sparsely and doesn't use much punctuation.

1984 - George Orwell
-Concerning a man living in the year 1984 in the fictional superstate of Oceania. Society lives under an extremely oppressive regime who can maintain constant surveillance on any and all civilians they choose. The book follows his awakening from the brainwashing of the state. This book is fucking heartbreaking.

Cormac McCarthy and George Orwell are both geniuses, I just read Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky: it's about a kid entering high school, who could possibly be a little bit autistic (but if not then just socially inept) written in the form of letters to an unknown recipient - it touches on friendship, drugs, sex, love, the good stuff. Very quality, sad and eye opening read. I'm also really into Joseph Boyden, who's Canadian, and more specifically his book Three Day Road about two native friends enlisting in the First World War in Canada. With their background they make amazing snipers in Europe and they do really well but evidently what do you expect, things go horribly wrong, morphine becomes a huge problem and they have to deal with some of the most gruesome images I have ever read - I didn't put this book down and finished it in a DAY it was so gripping. And for some non-fiction stuff I'm pretty obsessed with Malcolm Gladwell - Outliers, The Tippimg Point and What the Dog Saw, they're super awesome reads. This guy was a writer for The New Yorkers and writes about and researches some of the most interesting people, dilemmas and controversies. Seriously quality stuff.

David Foster Wallace: Infinite Jest

Animal Farm by George Orwell, one of my favorite books. Maybe its because the animals can talk and are able to interact with the humans or maybe its the story and message behind it.

If you liked this read We by Evgeny Zamyatin. He is the OG of dystipian stuff. Orwell is a chump compared to him.

In fact, Rand's "Anthem" tracks "WE" so closely both as to plot and character development that one cannot help but think that Zamyatin's influence on Rand was significant, to say the least.
