BYU vs UTAH...Help my friend

So..I have a friend and he would LOVE to go to BYU. He is an avid skier, and we are trying to talk him into going to the U this fall instead of BYU.. What are some pro's and con's to either school. He is Mormon too..fresh back from a mission. Where should he go?

A) U of U is the number 1 medical research school in the US for undergrads.

B) U of U is closer to all good ski resorts than BYU.

C) BYU is much more expensive.

D) You have to live in provo for 4 years. Ask anyone that's lived in Provo how much living in Provo sucks.

E) U of U has more NS'ers including me(winning!) and the Campus Rail Jam.

F) you're 30 minutes from PC.

G) You're in SLC - the only good place to be in Utah. Literally.

H) Free cable, interwebz, TRAX usage, and access to stores.

I) In BYU, you get thrown out of school if you're gay. You really want to go there to learn?

J) Mormons.

byu is cheap as shit if you are returning from a mission. but he's gotta take a close look at what it is he wants out of his college experience, one of the most important 4 years of his life.

does he want to have a dress-code more strict than middle school? does he want to be surrounded by pretty much only other mormans, isolating himself during a time where you are supposed to intellectualize your part in the world? does he want to risk very real and serious academic persecution for actions like sex, or drinking, or smoking, or other things the majority of college students engage in?

if any of his answers to these questions is no, then he should seriously reconsider wasting youthful years at byu. if he only wants a cheap (but admittedly pretty good) degree, then he'll get what he wanted from byu.

u of u is just as good of a school, reasonable out of state tuition, and its relatively fast and easy to declare residency and get super cheap in state. if he stays morman, theres a strong lds community at the u, and if wants to try something new, then the u has a lot of that too.

This is a good point. Obviously if your friend is considering BYU he doesn't believe in premarital sex and drinking, so that you can do those things at the U is a moot point. (Though technically, the U is a dry campus too. You just won't get kicked out of the U for drinking - even off campus - like my friend's sister was from BYU.) So I guess then it comes down to the costs of each school and whether or not your friend wants to surround himself completely in mormon culture. Most of ns would kill themselves, myself included, but I guess at the same time I can see the value of being at a school where everyone has the same values and morals. Certainly makes them easier to uphold.

Oh, and with that quote I meant to say that anyone who considers going to BYU might not be happy at the U, I was going to edit it so it just said "Anyone who considers going there should." Forgot to add that part!

If he's a strict mormon, he will be fine at BYU. but, if he likes to do other things besides mormon style activities after classes, or if he actually wants to be less than an hour drive from ski resorts, the U is a much better choice. besides that it comes down to money and which has a better program for him.

Alright here's the deal. I'm mormon, I go to BYU. But seriously I don't judge anyone on NS for the typical mormon hate, or for what they think about mormons, I can respect people's opinions it's totally cool.

So BYU is definitely a mormon school, but most of the rumors are false that really affect daily life. You aren't supposed to have sex before you're married or drink, but pretty much anything else is game. Those are the only things that directly affect me, but it's part of the religion too so it's not new to me.

I'm 45 minutes from Park City, driving pretty fast. I've gotten there in 35 driving way fast. This more than an hour business? Not true. There are for sure some cool people here, but at the same time, there are some weirdos and some crazy mormons. If I wasn't mormon, I would go somewhere else, but I honestly like going to school here cause I'm mormon. There are so so so many super attractive girls here, and BYU is ranked really high on the educational prestige scale. It's pretty tough to get in and classes are tough as well.

And I don't know how many of you are around mormons that much, but it's the same as anyone else, the normal people who are mormons are normal people, and the crazy people who are mormons are crazy people. If OPs friend wants to go to BYU and he knows how it's gonna be and he's ok with it, he'd probably like it.

And there's good access to skiing. Basically the only place better situated is the U/Westminster.

i go to BYU and i still smoke weed erry day. my parents pretty much made me go here but its cheap as shit, has one of the best business schools in the nation, is an hour from skiing, and theres still tons of chill kids here like me. you're only breaking the honor code if someone finds out so i can still do whatever i want. i dont consider myself mormon, but mormons are the NICEST people i've ever met so going here is fine.

if you're mormon you should go here, but if you're not then don't, just at least respect the people who choose to live their life in a religious way.

but MY OPINION, slc is not the only good place to live in slc, sure compared to provo, i'll give ya that. but i find your statement that slc is the only good place, hell even the best place to live ignorant.

I've explored most of the state. The only place I would want to live is PC or SLC. I can't think of anywhere else that I would even consider.

It depends if you want to embrace your Mormon way of life, and have it be a huge part of your everyday experiences. Or if you want to go to college and learn/have fun/etc, while being Mormon.

Also, you need a permit to have a beard at BYU. But at the U your beard can shine with pride.

Fuck yes! UVU kinda sucks, but it is a better time than BYU and has just as many hot chicks. WSU has a sick location, nice facilities, good programs, and it is the best deal in Utah compared to the quality of the education. SUU is also great school, especially for field Botany, Geology, and Zoology. Even USU is sweet, but cache valley smells like shit and is filled with toxic fumes. There are a lot more options than U of U.

You'll ski more and get a more well rounded education at the U, but at BYU you'll be garunteed into the heaven that offers you your own planet and youll have a chance at some smokin hot white anglo saxon protestant chick who will love you like her one and only (because you in fact are) who will also tranform into  a morbidly obese jello molding, pill popping, gossip queen by the time your 30. Dream big.
