most ppl who say they turn to noodles after one year have proabably ridden them for a day as demos because they can't afford to buy their own skiis. Salomon does have foam core skiis, but unlike popular beleif they don't disentigrate. People have to start realizing that wood, yes wood, looses pop and flex aswell, unless your entire core is made of some super sick alloy your skiis will eventually degrade, anyway i don't see why these kids hate so much because their rich parents buy them new ones every year anyway....

1080s are a pretty weak ski. and salomon doesnt care about newschool. and they suck. period

I've had both the teneighty and teneighty mogul, both have the spaceframe shit. I actually like both skis, but in the end after about 20 solid days they do start to fall apart. My teneighties delamed before the season ended (by the way this is 2 years ago, but salomon didn't change the teneighty last year) they were still under warranty and I needed a mogul ski so they agreeded to let me get the moguls instead of another pair of teneighties. I used the teneighty moguls for about 20-30 days this past season and really lied them and they are in decent shape for next year

i've ridden 1080's for the past few years and i demoed a pair of PR in whislter durring a spring dumb. i hate how my 1080's ride, not stable, very very soft, and to top it off they are foam core. the PR's were good but i didn't feel stable at higher speeds and they were again to soft for my liking. thus i went with Motherships instead of PR's for this next year. wood core = more solid ski

Do you really wnt to know how much Salomon cares? Remember a couple years ago when skiercross was suddenly sooo hot? Salomon threw more money at that crap than a Saudi at his security forces. They immediately produced numerous 'Crossmax' skis, 'Crossmax' bindings,poles, and sponsored the entire skiercross circuit and anything to do with it. It showed what kind of money Salomon has kicking around. What an FIS brownose that was. So much for that being the next big thing.
But with newschool skiing, they produce the 1080. Which given, was innovative when it first came out, but not now. So they just let it be at that, occaisionaly giving the sport some support. But relativly nothing compared to the resources they have. They sign CR Johnson, to try and show they support us, but really it's because he hucked a 1440 when he was 15 and they saw the dollar signs in this kid. A wise investment.
Now, FIVE years later, we're still stuck with 1080's. Recently they throw a truckload of money at Candide and Simon. Instantly, with relativly little effort, they have an uber cool ski team that gives us the illusion they care. The 'new' 1080's are just repackaged with redone graphics. They're not fooling anyone.(hopefully) They have put 0 development effort into the sport we love. They just want our money. If you care about your sport you'll support rider owned/driven companies. (*cough*Armada*hhmhm*4-Frnt) Ahem.. Not a bunch of suits that still think daffy's are part of the new fad of 'trick skiing' Even K2, while being a multinational corporation still finds the time to support us. Don't fall for the illusion. THEY DON'T GIVE A DAMN. So don't support them.

Ummmm, S-A-L-O-M-O-N? Funny how short term some people's memories are.

So Salomon, K2, Rossignol, Dynastar, and Line created this market segment, and a few upstart companies capitalize on its popularity by claiming they're more core, rider-oriented, etc... THEN turn around and offer products that are neither terribly innovative or progressive (in terms of construction method, cost, and performance).

It's easy to take shots at number 1. Whatever. If you want to buy a laminated wood sandwich board, that'll cost you more, just to feel " truer to the movement ", - fill your boots. Just don't look down on someone who's sporting the latest 1080, or other mass-marketed ski,'cause they may just embarrass you in the pipe...

/\ no doesn't know what he is talking about. see salomon had a good market base because they were the originators. then when other ski comps. (k2, dynastar, etc) made a more durrable, faster, more resonsive ski salomon didn't change it just kept the foam core, thinking that lighter is better then any other aspect of a ski. even tho they make wood core skis they don't care enough about newschool skiing to upgrade their skis to wood core. the Technology in the ski world has greatly increased over the past 10 to 12 year far more then ever before. look at a $1000 set up from 1993 and look at a $1000 set up in even as far back as 1998. bigggg change. materials are being experimented with. new edge/sidewall designs for holding a better edge. and new ideas for sizes of skis ie. tip,wasit,tail width; thickness of ski. types of epoxy used. and over all production of ski has changed with the changing tech market. so you can't say that others have not steped up ski technoloy over salomon. what they created a fairly durrable ski that uses the idea that the core doesn't matter and that its top sheet aka 'space frame' will be enough to hold it together. and i am willing a pay more money for a pair of skis if i know its not supporting large coporations that are not in support of the movement (aka S-A-L-O-M-O-N)

don't buy a ski just for the name. buy it for the ride/durablity/reliablity. go for them if your a beginer and need alot of flex to be a good skier. just relize you will be replacing them sooner then most wood core skis.

also with cost of course a big ski company will have cheaper skis they produce more. you pay for the knowlage that you are supporting a company that cares more about newschool skiing then most main stream companies. sometimes what you are buying into is just as important as what you are buying. i don't buy from comps that have large corporate investors that control their board (kinda like some 'core' company i know of called Arma..) and can and prob will some day, have other intrest other then skiing's newschool advancement.

Actually Tyler makes a couple of really good points which I'd like to address:

1080 for beginners - having tested a vast majority of twintips, all-mountain, and powder skis for publishers, I can say this is not far from the truth. I would add that it is well suited for younger (<16), lighter (<140 lbs), and physically weaker riders. Many of the newer skis offer stiffer and less forgiving performance which is fine, and more beneficial, for those accustomed to boosting huge air and, also, have a number of years under their belts. I just couldn't recommend such a ski to a park newbie. Their career would be short-lived.

Technology changes - yes, there have been advancements in construction methods, epoxies, etc. Firstly, Salomon's foam core method from the original 1080's to the current version are quite different. Originally, a liquid foam was poured into a monocoque and cured after the ski was fully assembled (think of a Caramilk bar). The problem with this was there was no real way of knowing how it cured after the fact (it could have formed air pockets, etc.) The advantages of it were the consistencies in weight and performance characteristics from ski to ski and from tip to tail.

Today, there is a requirement for differences in tip (more flex) and tail (stiffer) response. Cured foam sheets, of known density, are created (just like base material) and the ski is milled out of the sheet (cookie-cutter approach) with the thickness of foam determining the stiffness along its length. So, you kept the weight savings, solved the curing variables, and controled flex pattern.

Wood core can do the same BUT only as a laminate (think plywood). 20-30 thin layers of different types of wood are the only way of ensuring consistent performance from ski to ski. Otherwise, a solid wood core would have to be milled (just like spaceframe) but would not be the same from ski to ski (you would literally have to have a matched pair AND would be different from the next guy's). Let's not forget the weight too.

A few pros I've talked to feel the emphasis should be placed on cost. Given the amount of abuse skis are taking on rails, bails, and rejections; cheap replacement is the key. Many Line models, K2 Fujative, and the old Salomon 720 are the right direction, especially if you want to expand newschool's appeal. However the companies want to do that - power to them.

Sorry, I'm just a little annoyed by the mantra that "foam sucks, wood rocks" that's itterated around here without the experience to back it up. Every manufacturer I've tried has snapped, blown edges, ripped out bindings, etc. Core material and maker be damned.

ive skied them and theyre alright. nothin crazy but alright nonetheless. theres no such thing as a bad ski. only a bad skier.

Man I wish my rich parents bought me new skis every year. Right now my biggest sponsor is the Rossignol Warrenty Dept.

Too many people are saying that salomon doesnt contribute to newschool skiing. Do you people see the huge salomon signs at several events, us open for example. Those signs come from all the money salomon is spending in order to help support some of new schools skiings biggest cometitions.

Salomon also uses a foam core because thats what they think is the best, and would you make a major change, foam to wood, in your ski if it was selling as fast as the 1080. Iam sure the new pro models will be a little stiffer for those who think the 1080 is too soft.

while the 1080 isn't that great, if I remember right, Salomon was one of the main supports for progression ski camps. Maybe they support competitions and camps like that because they do actually have the money, but don't say they aren't supporting newschool skiing at all.

Hey, remember when Salomon Japan took a proposal from a crazy guy named Mike Douglas and developped a crazy, double tipped ski? And remember how JP Auclair and JF Cusson went to the US Open(first one, I believe), and won big air and slopestyle, respectively? Their 1080s didn't make it until after the contest, but if you look at the podium pictures, JP is holding a 1080 ski. The point? When no one else gave a fuck or was too lazy to bust their balls and get a twin tip out early, like K2 with the Enemy(don't start with the 'poacher and Olin' bullshit), Salomon went out on a limb and developped a ski for one very specific purpose: Progressive Freestyle Skiing.

You may not like their new product, they may or may not have treated quite a few excellent riders properly(I don't know what happened. Do you? No? Then shut the fuck up about it.), but the 1080 is probably the second most important ski to have been made in the past 25 years, right behind that first shaped Olin ski.
