theres only like 2 good designs. I went through and rated them all, and i dont think ive ever givin so many 1s in a ns contest and actually ment them. i hope they dont make some dumb crazy pattern design

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I evidently had a little bit of a brain fart when setting up this contest (as it was the first time I'd used our new contest system), as I mistakenly set it to announce only 3 winners in the voting round (because that's how many there will eventually be once the First Drop staff and team pick their favorite 3 out of the top 15 highest rated entries that were determined by you guys), when it should have been set to 15.

The entries are looking great! But I don't think this is the best voting method to use in a 200ish-entries contest. The first entry get rated a lot more time then those at the end, which makes it harder for them to obtain a high score. The last entries only need a few high ratings and since it's the average rating that matters, it gets easier for them. Anyway, I'm stoked to see 3 of the designs that won in real. Every entry got the same amount of time to obtain votes, as voting didn't open until after the entry deadline. And we didn't think there would be over 200 entries...but we sure are stoked! Also rest assured that First Drop will be going through ALL the entries just for the sake of checking them out, so if they see something they dig you'll likely be rewarded for it.

If I entered tees and a suit and FD liked my tee but not my suit, would I still get compensated if you guys used the tees next year? I'm kinda confused on how the whole top 3 works. Is there like a top 3 for each category or is it your overall entry?

I don't mean to be rude, but the way this contest turned out is kinda bullshit. The entry that was top rated was a completely white suit?! WTF how is that even creative in the least bit; it doesn't take much effort to leave the template completely blank. And some of the other top entries are just completely solid black, or solid colored. How is that even original? The rating system in contests like this needs to be rethought.

thank you for realizing this. Also, people who didnt use the correct template like the rules stated should be DQed. There are logo entries in the top 15? was that even apart of the contest? I feel the voting got so skewed by the aliases that it wasnt fair. FD should chose top 15, then narrow it down to 3. fuck that voting system.

I agree with this completely. I feel like they probably wanted it to originally be a reflection of the tastes and interests of this skiing community since we are their target market.
However, when it turns out that people are only rated in the top 15 because of their ability to sway a contest with any means possible, and not based on their design ideas and creativity, contests like this turn into a complete unfair waste of time.

First off, thanks very much for bringing this to our attention. We spent a fair bit of time looking into this today, and it turns out that all of those new usernames you're referencing actually aren't aliases. The top rated entry in the first round evidently got a bunch of her friends (via Facebook, Twitter or otherwise) to come on here, sign up for a username, and vote for her.

Is this cheating? If they gave her entry a 10 and other entries a 1 in a direct attempt to screw other people over, then yes. But they didn't do that. Because if they did, our new anti-cheat system that Paul slaved away on for our new contest system would have detected it and automatically thrown those votes out (and it would have automatically done the same if she made a bunch of aliases to vote for her own entry). Chris, Paul and I even spent time today manually going through all the votes to double check just to be sure, and we all came up with the same results...every one one of those new usernames rated their friend's entry a 10, and that was it.

This is of course a bit of a tricky issue, because while some may think that's cheating, in our opinion, it's nothing more than savvy marketing/self-promotion. Because when you get right down to it, despite what anyone thinks of the entry and whether you feel it deserves to be top rated or not, all that person did was ask for her friends to help her out, and they did it in a non-malicious way. And this isn't the first time we've seen this in online contests, both here and all over the Internet. I mean look at our forums...there's dozens of contest sway threads right now, and everyone is doing it elsewhere, so how can we say it can't or won't happen here? While we don't want 200 threads showing up in the forums for every contest, we encourage you to find support elsewhere. For example, look at what all the athletes do when they enter contests like the King of Style or JOI video qualifiers...they promote the living bejesus out of their entries on their Facebook and Twitter pages and personal blogs, asking people to go and vote for them. Is that cheating? Once again, in my opinion, not at all. It's actually pretty smart.

As a result, although we fully understand and respect your concerns, we're not going to disqualify her (because really, how can we justify doing that to someone who just simply asked her friends to vote for her), although Lesh and his merry band of rebels at First Drop have been made aware of the situation, and they may very well take it into account when they make their final picks, as part of the reason we had you guys determine the top 15 was so that First Drop could get a good sense of what this awesome community (and therefore their customers) do and don't like, and this situation is obviously not an accurate reflection of your voice, hence why we've let the First Drop guys know what's up. And on that note, to all of you who didn't make the top 15, trust me, the First Drop crew is really fired up about all the entries and the overwhelming number of them, so they're going to take the time to check out every single one.

but its a fucking white suit.. give someone who actually put time into their design/COLORWAYS first place. to me, those are considered aliases too, they will never return and dont give one fuck about the ski industry. All this NS voting shit is flawed cause kids are gonna tell their friends to vote the others down and theirs up. also what about the logos and failure to use the correct templates that are in top 15?

I agree. Many of these friends are likely neither skiers nor snowboarders, and therefore certainly not people who would consider buying First Drop's gear. Hence, they really have no business voting in a First Drop design contest.

I could have asked my buddies to create on account here on NS so that they could vote for me.. But I felt like it was the exact same as making aliases. I don't really care if it's 1-2 friends that help you, but when 50 of your friends make you win with blank templates, it's ridiculous. Rules of the next contests should be made clearer, because this one is kind of getting out of control..
