Sex has progressed science more than any other factor. You think nerds want to be smart for the sake of mankind? Fuck no, they are inventing shit to get rich and therefore get laid. Look at Ben Franklin, guy was fat, had gout, balding, and ugly. AND THE GUY SLAYED!

In addition, religion is against recreational sex. Which makes since, who better to judge the sex lives of people than a creepy 70 year old celibate man who wears a cape.

So in summation, religion has not only ruined sex and made normal human biology shameful, but has also stunted scientific development. Strike 2 religion, strike 2.

all scientists are in that business to get rich (because the cash flow in that way of life is astounding....) and get laid. it's not like they're being driven by the thirst for knowledge and the love for their job.

once again, you are spot one. 100% of religious people follow celibacy because all they know how to do is live and breathe every word the bible expels. they dont know how to pick and choose or interpret, becuase religion isnt based off of that.

the human genome is the only one that comes to mind.

in the early 20th century we invented powered flight, space travel, the microchip, and nuclear fusion and fission.

I find this disgusting. Especially in America. WE were founded as "ONE NATION UNDER GOD". We were founded as a christian nation. Can't even walk down the street or flip on the tv without seeing anything but evil and disgusting things pushed into your face. It saddens me how far we've slid away from the bible. The ends times are beginning.

MRI's arent that important in the grand scheme of things.

the discovery of Penecillin(sp?) on the other hand is. And it was completely new.

An MRI machine uses big ass electro magnets(an already existing technology) to perform something new. It is essentially a next generation x-ray machine...something to see inside the body.

some werent bad (ive only perused the thread a bit but most of what he claimed as evidence for religion being good and necessary are things that can and ARE done without religion such as tight knit community, morals, spirituality, benevolence to others etc) but claiming that recreational sex has slowed down advancement? i mean im almost positive he's trolling but honestly ive seen dumber shit said on here..

good things can be done without religon but religon facilitates the process. the example i used before is a good one-"donating to the red cross or a food bank is a lot easier than actually going out and delivering food to the poor, or helping the injured poor in other countries". i dont want to actually go and find a poor family and give them a TG turkey, but i am more than happy to drop off a turkey at the local food bank and let them do the leg work.

Religon is the best institution that we have to facilitate good charitable work. I am in no way saying that religon is neccesary for charity and a sense of community. i am saying that religon is the easiest, and most accesable way to perform charitable acts, and find a tight knit community.

I'm not going to get too into this argument, because even I could play devil's advocate with myself all day long. But I think it's crucial to differentiate between followers of a religion and a religion itself. There is no such thing as a perfect follower of a religion, and we admit that. We're not even going to claim that our religion is perfect. After all, it's merely an attempt to follow a higher power that we believe in and in itself is very man-made. The Vatican would like you to believe otherwise, but that's why I'm not a Catholic.

People shouldn't generalize Christians so much

I, as a Christian believe

- The Earth is old

- A large sum of the bible is not to be taken literally

- A large sum of the bible is made up(god didn't edit the bible......)

- People shouldn't shove their religion down other people's throats

- Dinosaurs existed, and not during people times!!(dumbest argument i've ever gotten into with someone at school)

- Aliens do exist

- There is some type of evolution

- Jesus did die for my sins

- god did not want us to hate gay people ( I don't understand how people can think god would hate anyone who was born a way they can't help...)

- most Christians do not live their life like one (go to a college party)

- Just because you are a different religion than Christianity doesn't mean you're going to hell( I get shit for this one)

I go to church whenever I come home and was raised as a methodist( but i think denominations are dumb so I say i'm a Christian).

Believe it or not, many of our laws have their origins in religious text, which many people got morals from. Is there an atheist's book of morals?

What religion gives us is how to act. If religion had never happened, what kind of laws, government system would we have?
