Space Weather & Japan Earthquake

So I came across a channel on Youtube called CaveNews that posts videos of the Earth's Magnetosphere and its interaction with solar wind. I've been watching the daily clips and have seen some interesting things, but nothing as intense and powerful as what happened on the day of the quake. Check it out. We got fucking blasted by the Sun!


Coincidence?

The information comes from the National Institue of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), based out of Tokyo, Japan. The guy on youtube just takes these short clips and puts them together to create a video of the Earth's field each day. The last clip was posted the day after the quake, and no more have been posted since due to power outages

Heres another interesting clip on our magnetosphere. NASA has discovered that when the field of the Sun and Earth align, a phenomena known as 'magnetic reconnection" occurs. A hole in the magnetosphere FOUR TIMES THE SIZE OF EARTH can open, exposing the whole day side of Earth to the bombardment of high energy rays and particles.

So what does this mean for us?

We are all gonna die one day. Might it be from sun radiation. I don't care as long as i'm skiing or biking the shit out my life when it happens.

I don't mean for this to spread fear. Just because we're just becoming aware of this now doesn't mean it hasn't been happening for thousands of years in our evolution already. I'm curious to know if any NSers know the effects of high energy waves(x-ray and gamma ray especially) on our bodies. I know that x-rays can cause mutations in cells and possibly lead to cancer. I wonder if the higher energy gamma rays could effect our DNA. Some scientist say that evolution does not just happen slowly over time, but often appears to be big changes in many species around similar times. I think that the sun has and will continue to play a role in our evolution.

a problem with the second video, how does the sun generate that massive of a magnetic field?
