Official Canadian Federal Election Thread - May, 2011

So, after the government unveiled the 2011 federal budget today (the most nothing budget in at least a decade), it seems certain, if not official, that there will be an election as a result of the vote on friday. It'll take place on May 2 or May 9. Although I am guessing no one will have much to say yet, things always heat up as the campaign goes along so I thought I would make a thread.

Will there be a conservative majority? Who will you vote for (or who would you vote for if you could)? Will the current issues surrounding the budget form a jumping-off platform for election issues? I'm thinking not - there is simply nothing really in there to campaign on or against, aside from the elimination of the federal deficit by 2015. From where I sit, the issues at stake will develop over the next couple of weeks and we'll be talking about completely different things than now. Aside from contempt of Parliament which is a good election buzzword.

The University of Ottawa, although located in Ontario, also offers a baccalaureate degree in Quebec civil law,


Quebec Civil Law is a 3-4 year undergraduate degree. I just looked it up. are my sources wrong?

Like I said, no idea how civil law system works. You can be called in Quebec with that (much like the UK or AU) but not anywhere else in Canada.

Quebec Civil Law degree is a 3 year undergrad degree. youCANNOT practice with this degree, but it is simply a forerunner to getting into law school.  like you took philosophy before getting in, you can take a qc civil law degree before getting in

my mistake on that one then

conservative candidate in my area was canvasing as i was changing the oil on my car in the drive way. gave some speech about how he thought trudeau was awesome at first, but then realized he ruined canada. shook my greasy hand (wiped with a paper towel but still had residue, it was fresh oil though..) but the dudes handshake was so limp, i fucking hate that! he was asian though, so i don't know if its customary to not give a strong hand shake? i don't know. i wanted to tell him, no offence, but if im going to vote for you and you want other people to, start shaking hands like a man.

While I partly agree, you can't judge someone by their handshake. He could've thought you were a weak fucker and gone with a loose grip intentionally as to not scare you away.

if we had candidates like this idiot running for PM in Canada, i would vote, simply out of fear that he might win. luckily, this idiot can't run for PM of Canada, and therefore i have nothing to worry about.

It's going to be another conservative minority. There will not be another majority for awhile until the separatists in Quebec figure out that voting for the Bloc is useless.
Other then that I see the conservative gaining a few more seats, Liberals lose more, NDP gains, Green party still gets no seats and the Bloc take most of Quebec.

There will be another election in 2-3 years.

The polling coming out everyday is PAINFULLY steady. The only real fluctuations is in the NDP and Green which no one cares about anyway. Conservatives are consistently holding a 10 point lead over the liberals. This combined with their only being one debtate, probably means that this will continue. Unless there is a ground breaking slip up or economic/war/disaster crises. The only real thing I could see happening is people look at the polling and go fuck this I don't want another election next year and vote conservative, or start to warm up to ignatieff a bit - which I don't think will happen since most people see him as an out of touch elitist.

I think a lot of people aren't really paying any attention at all yet. Aside from the occasional attack ad nothing's really been flying around, there's no water cooler talk. It being the start of the playoffs probably helps with this all flying under the radar, because let's face it, Canadians have their priorities straight. Hockey is simply more important than our government.

I'd wait 'til after the debate on tuesday, I think a lot of people will make up their minds based on that and I think there are a lot of Con respondents who are capable of being swayed (I am one, would be a total swing voter if I didn't live in AB).

that's exactly it, you're a single guy. You're not a family with 8 times the expenses trying to raise children adequately so the country will have a good future.

If you don't like social programs, then leave, It's what Canada is based off of. Having an equal opportunity for all to succeed, have an education, get health care, etc. same with a coalition. it's part of our system. if you don't like any of that stuff how can you like Canada? go move to US and stop complaining. You went through the public school system, you more than likely have used the health system and not paid directly for it. You should be thanking socialism for that.

The fact of the matter is so far everyone has been able to express their own opinions and political beliefs without being called out for the most part. While you may not agree with others on their political stand points at least make the time to present a discussion without making you seem young/uneducated at the same time.

I do not consider myself a Liberal, I consider myself left wing.

at this point I really do not know who I will vote for, but it might be a strategic vote rather than who I actually want to have win in my riding. (since the individual I want to win absolutely has no chance in hell)


I didn't realize pointing out the ignorance of bashing the more socialist aspects of our society when one clearly has only benefited from them made me look "young and uneducated" as Proletariat suggests.

^^ Meh. Doubt much will come out of that. I feel like the G8 spending story has gone and past. Anyone else feeling this debate will change nothing? I feel like the only people who actually watch a boring 2 hour canadian debate are people who are interested in politics to begin with, which usually means they are well informed already and are going to vote a particular way. I mean I'm sure a % of people are independents and want to make an informed decision may watch, but I see no bump in the polls coming from this. Baring some sort of slip up. I think the conservative strategy is "don't fuck it up" and cruise to a very easy minority and a possible majority.

The debates more than likely will have little to no significance.  but the G8 spending is now being pushed as another big 'scandal'. and it seems the uninformed like that word. and I'm thinking many people will not vote conservative because of it being pushed hard. and it's so close to election time it will still be in people minds. sooo, another minority. yippie. fuck

I dunno I think the debates usually get pretty solid viewership. Like my grandparents watch them. I expect that this new scandalous scandal (lol at Iggy using that word like ten times in the span of a 5 minute interview) will be much discussed, particularly by Layton.

I'm interested to see this so called scandal... Doesn't the debate only change about 5% of the vote though?

I feel like the majority of Canadians (particularly Conservatives) recently only vote for the same party regardless of what they have to say.

On a side note, I really hope young voter turnout is better than the last election, that was embarrassing

yea it really is pitiful how many young people vote. I mean, people will die for democracy. you don't just shit away that chance.

and I just heard a stat on the radio saying that 75% of people over 65 in Canada vote. So retired people actually have really good turn out. maybe it's because they lived through the cold war and are a lot closer to the world wars and know how important democracy is and how lucky we are to have it. Just a thought

I think so, our generation hasn't seen how politics can affect our lives. Overall, we have had constant stability within our lives. We should need to live through the great depression, WWII or the Cold War to want to contribute to how the country is run.

It really is pathetic, everyone over the age of 18 should cast their vote no matter who it is for. Democracy is to precious of a thing to throw away. Get off your asses and vote, every vote counts. As for the debate I expect Ignatieff to dominate considering he is an intellectual prick. Also watch for Jack Layton who has nothing to lose, he will be gunning for everyone which will make it entertaining. Harper is in for a tough one tonight, hopefully he plays his cards right and doesn't draw any more fire in his direction.

I tend to disagree with the young people not voting thing and it needs to be mandatory, etc etc. I mean, yea, the statistics show young people don't vote. But I think not voting is a way for a lot of people to voice their opinion. Not voting is a vote for no one, a distaste for the choices. I usually support the libertarian party when that happens because I prefer to vote. I always say if you don't vote you can't bitch. And I like to reserve my right to bitch.

On a side note. The debate is on right now. Been watching for 5 seconds and Ignatieff is yelling already. Looks like I was right. Ignatieff gets desperate, Harper tries not to fuck it up.

fuck that shit. why should i have to pay for social programs so other people dont have to work? im all for healthcare and things like that, but that's the foundation of our nation right there and it isn't going to change in any major way. the right to a healthy life, having opportunity for underprivileged children to get educated, engage it community activities - it's not like a conservative government is taking any of that away. it's all about the smaller things. raising my tax so college students can have cheaper schooling? tell the kid to stop jacking off in his bedroom and playing call of duty all summer and get a fucking job to pay for his schooling. that's how i did it. that way, and through student loans.

nothing would get done if we all lived in a liberal fantasy world. yeah lets give more money to the healthcare system so we can put more doctors in hospitals that dont have enough rooms for the patients it sees already. that makes sense. overstaffing public facilities doesn't lead to an increased turnover, building more facilities does. the fuck's a liberal government going to solve? we'd just be more pathetic in the defense department than we already are and be pissing away money on irrelevant social programs. family expenses are more than manageable right now with a full-time minimum wage job. what would saving money do for the 'average family', encourage them to work less so they can have more freebies? that isn't me being selfish, that's me being realistic. if you want shit, work for it. if you aren't prepared to work, dont have 8 kids and expect the system to save you. i do believe in welfare for those who don't have opportunity, but i don't believe in giving a mother a fucking year of paid time off because she has a baby. ask your mother how long she took off work when she had you. couple weeks? what the hell would get done in the world if everyone just counted on someone else to do the work for them and still get paid?

I loved Laytons blow to Ignatieff about his attendance and then Ignatieff's blow to Layton " At least we have been elected to parliaments office". Harper played it pretty cool and didn't make any real big waves. His people probably told him "Dont fuck it up and play it cool"
