Official Canadian Federal Election Thread - May, 2011

So, after the government unveiled the 2011 federal budget today (the most nothing budget in at least a decade), it seems certain, if not official, that there will be an election as a result of the vote on friday. It'll take place on May 2 or May 9. Although I am guessing no one will have much to say yet, things always heat up as the campaign goes along so I thought I would make a thread.

Will there be a conservative majority? Who will you vote for (or who would you vote for if you could)? Will the current issues surrounding the budget form a jumping-off platform for election issues? I'm thinking not - there is simply nothing really in there to campaign on or against, aside from the elimination of the federal deficit by 2015. From where I sit, the issues at stake will develop over the next couple of weeks and we'll be talking about completely different things than now. Aside from contempt of Parliament which is a good election buzzword.

I'd say that's a huge deal. First time greens ever had a seat, right? That means more chances to get taken seriously, more influence on policies, etc. That's pretty sweet. Canadian policies regarding our future are so fucked right now, and we're routinely one of the worst countries in the world regarding how we treat the environment.

This is disastrous. Largely because we do not want the NDP as an "alternative" in any way shape or form. If the Cons screw up I want a liberal government, an NDP government is basically the nightmare scenario that will now come true. There is no way the conservatives can hold power forever. Maybe another 5 years, maybe even longer, sure. But not forever. And when they do lose it, having the NDP in power is a scary proposition.

alot of ppl have complained about stephen harper in this thread, but really he was the only candidate worth voting for in this election.

layton - money is not unlimited - therefore we have to have a balanced budget

Uh "we" is this country. As in, if the country wants an NDP government it does not know what is in its own best interests. Having lived in B.C. over the last 25 years I can say with some authority that that is how things get really fucked up. The conservative majority is not my ideal scenario either but it is not frightening, per se. An NDP government is frightening. We have done too well economically, relative to the rest of the world, over the course of the past few years to flush fiscal prudence and stability down the toilet like that.

I think I'm the only student in my area that voted Conservative

Right now a bunch of people are losing their minds about Layton not winning and the Cons getting a majority. I doubt that 99% of these people knew why they voted with the NDP other than just liking Jack Layton...

This election proves we need this. The center left and left split their votes, the majority of Canadians voted against Harper. This was no surprise and hopefully next election, we will have a 2 party system.

I completely agree. An NDP government would completely reck our relationship with the USA, our biggest trade relationship. A lot of young people absolutely hate harper, when what has he really done so wrong, he saved our country from a huge recession, if the NDP had been in power the last 4 years, we'd be billions more in debt. Young people, at least in my area, seem to think NDP is the answer, when really its not. Liberals just need a better leader. I think that a large percentage of liberals voted NDP solely because they hate Ignatief.

Unless you're some fuck up who dropped out of school to work full time you don't pay taxes when you're 16. If anything we should raise the voting age.

If the new responsibility of governing the whole of Canada can pull the Conservatives towards the center a little more then I'm not too worried about the next four years.

The problem is with younger people voting it will decimate our government. I know when I was in high school everyone wanted to vote Green to legalize Marijuanna without any regard for the other parties.

This alone tells me that you have no idea how government works. A vote of non-confidence is essentially the exact same thing as "calling an election". It happens basically every time there is a minority government and an election is called. It isn't like a censure of government.

40% of people voted exclusively for the conservatives, 60% voted against them, just in different routes. if you ask me, canada spoke very loudly against their "majority" government. the only issue is we are dealing with a skewed voting system, that imo, kind of sucks now that i understand it. Harper/conservs should not have a majority, and should not be left alone to make social decisions. those who voted in favor of lowered taxes and more jobs will have a pleasant surprise when we lose an incredible amount of benefits and positives that made canada what is it was. anyways. i'll be intensely anxious to be proven wrong. needless to say i obviously am not happy, and think that people need to evaluate more important things over foreign friendships to benefit financial gain. goodbye good life, hello likely economic bullshit.

Yeah the economy is such bullshit and a relationship with the US is just financially stupid... Stop downplaying the significance of the most important issues of this election and decade Jen.

To many NDP supports vote with their emotions. Hopefully this conservatice government can prove them wrong and a left wing opposition will be good for debate and perspective.

A lot of people don't really realize that the left vote isn't necessarily split between liberals and NDP. A lot of Liberal supporters are right-center and played a major role in this election by changing their vote to conservative for fear of a left government in the NDP. Keep in mind the same thing happened on the left side of the liberal spectrum. The two left party excuse is bullshit.

And you will be. Harper and co. run like frightened rabbits from any suggestion that they would ever implement any sort of social policy that is at all out of step wtih the general social liberalism of the country. They are politically quite savvy and understand that, i.e., screwing with abortion or gay marriage would be giving away seats and would completely destroy them. Those issues are simply not important to how the country is run and not a hill worth dying on for them, so they will leave them alone.

What about Saskatchewan? There province was dominated by the NDP party for years. What have they done for our economy? Not a single thing. Seriously, try to recall something. Hell, nobody even wanted to live there. Saskatchewan has been mostly ran by the NDP from around 1944. Once Saskatchewan started voting in a different direction federally starting in 2002 there economy has done nothing but improved. They are actually producing instead of just taking from the other provinces. Oh and need I mention that after 16 years of NDP provincial rule, the Saskatchewan party (combination of Liberal/Conservative) finally took over in 2007 and they have done nothing but boom since.
