Help before I Incriminate myself

In school, I take excel class 6th period (M,W). The class consists of typing up spreadsheets and data all class long. I've been behind lately because of my tardiness for school; So i decided to let one of my freinds send me some of the assignments.
Today, he came up to me and said we got caught cheating, but he hasn't admitted to it, nor have I. I deleted the files out of my email and changed the names of the documents and everything inside of them so it looks like i wrote it. My question is, if neither of us admit to this and she has no proof of us actually cheating.. Is it possible for me to recieve a 0 on this assignment?

He said the teacher walked up to him saying that our spreadsheets were very alike and she had the idea that we've cheated. He said no i didnt do anything of this sort and she hasnt spoken with me yet. I'm just going to tell her i have no idea what she is talking about and if she could find valid proof of this "cheating" it would be greatly appreciated.

Deny the shit out of it. If all they have against you guys is the same numbers or mistakes on the spreadsheet say you guys worked together after school one day because you didn't understand the material, therefore you both made the same mistakes. Also make sure you know how to do whatever document they "caught" you cheating on so if they call bullshit on your story and ask you to prove you actually can do the material you can.

Also make sure your friend knows to state the same story as you before you start weaving your web. Plead the fifth until you guys can get on the same page.

Teacher cannot get you on speculation. My only concern would be explaining my answers. Certainly it's not impossible to have identical/similar results on an assignment. If you can explain why your shit is the way it is you have her against a wall.

that going to make you seem really guilty though also. my suggestion would be to play it chill, just be like "cheting? who me? come on ms____ you know i wouldnt do that. sorry they look alike though. is there anything you want me to change or re do?" basically suck a little it, but not too an annoying point and get you shit on lock with your friend BEFORE they talk to you, just in case,

also if you get called down to the office your fucked.

Before u take this 5th amendment thing too far, remember you have the right to say nothing and the school can still punish u for not complying. Sounds stupid cuz it is. Teachers aren't there cuz they're the best at what they do... Not the vast majority anyways

Keep in mind that just changing the name of the file wont mean she still cant find out. Excel has "Metadata" that lists who created the file, the date and the time. If you right click the file on your computer and go to properties you can change some of it. The rest has to be done while the file is open.
If your teacher is teaching an excel class I would hope to god she knows about this.

What was the nature of the assignment as well? Was the purpose of the assignment to learn how to type in and format raw data in excel, with the information being typed in largely irrelevant to the assignment? Or was the assignment more based on how you analysed and interpreted the information?

Being an excel class I wouldn't be surprised if it was the former. If it is, it will be much more difficult to get away with this because quite frankly you don't deserve the marks. I'm not saying that to be a dick, we all get lazy, I am just being honest and seeing it as your prof would. In this situation I would accept a zero and be thankful nothing worse happened like failing the course.

However if the assignment is more based on what the information means, and not on how you actually used excel, then you can likely get away with it by just being honest. A lot of profs use automatic scanners to check for duplicate original authors and original dates. If you say that you worked on entering the information into a spreadsheet together and he emailed you the data, the prof probably will not care. Just say you did it to save time typing in the information, and completed the assignment on your own later.

are you in high school, or university?

yo there is an issue with ur story bc if ur teacher is at all smart their will be a section in the file which shows who created it. you have to go to properties to find it but i had a friend get caught in college doing the same thing. when you are approached tread lightly dont go denying it. if you fess up they might let you off if they found out who created the file and you deny it ur fuqd

this. It's a school, not a court.

If you try the whole "You have no proof" thing, it's going to make you appear look two things:
1)Guilty
2)Like an arrogant dick

Best bet is to play it cool, and point out the differences. Do not enrage her. If she does find evidence, she may be more lenient if you haven't been cocky and pissed her off.

it depends on how much effort she's gonna put into investigating.. as has been said, there is metadata to worry about but it's possible, if you have a document made on the day you shouldve done the assignment, to copy and paste shit on to that one. dont just make a new one today and copy and paste though, cause she'll obviously see what's up with that. beyond that, yeah just tread lightly and say you worked on the assignment together and dont be too aggressive or cocky because if she does get you in a pinch and youre being a prick she's about 300% more likely to take you to the cleaners whereas if youre nice and get caught, there's a small possibility she'll take it easy on you.

Yeah but if they don't have solid proof but screw you on the grade you can always sue them. They can't arbitrarily give failing grades.

So, basically, you got caught cheating, but you won't admit it although you did actually cheat, and then you go on talking about showing your teacher, who obviously pays attention what goes around in your class, what you learned in 'American Law' class.

happened to me before in an accounting class when i let one of my friends copy an my assignment. She couldn't prove it but still ended up giving us 50%. Shit was pretty sketch for a bit... but she could still give us whatever grade she wants as it is her class afterall. Pretty bullshit i know

but we were teh ones that still cheated so we're the dumbasses

Citing legal precedent is going to make him look as guilty as fuck. it is at the teacher's discretion.

the teacher is never going to have to present evidence to a Court or anything like that. If he/she has seen you have the same results as someone else, that is it, that's all the "proof" she needs.

Tbh, it would probably do you good to get an ass-kicking. Cheating gets you nowhere in life

You do have rights in school, but they are severely limited.

You basically lose all your rights as a citizen once you step onto school property (as a student).

In my humble opinion, it's a cheater's world. You can be honest and make it, you just have to work a lot harder. Look at how our government (United States) treats white collar criminals (who steal a whole lot more money) versus blue collar criminals. Pretty ridiculous.

are you in highschool or college? cuz i know in college (at least in NYS) the professors have a lotta of leeway, also youd have to check your indavidual schools policies.

like it was pretty fucked up but one of my business proffs failed my friends because he was texting on his phone in class to many times. he fought it and the school backed the professor because he had laid out the rule in the class syllabus saying no phones in class and used a three strike policy.

Meaningless. If OP appeals against any punishment by taking it to court, then he is even more of a fuckwit than his inability to complete Excel spreadsheets suggests.

Legal precedent is for the Court room. Not to be banded around by moronic children who are too lazy to do their homework.

if they dont have evidence than no. and due to the 5th amendment you dont even have to answer them and you cant get in trouble. dont lie to police though because that is a crime and if they find out you could get arrested and stuffs
