IPOD help please!

I have a problem with my 2nd gen ipod touch!
My ipod was stuck on the apple screen then would go black, i took it to apple and they said they couldnt get it to restore, but after googing i fixed it. But that requred me to restore and upgrade it, my itunes would not connect to the internet so i had to do it on my moms computer. When it upgraded it gave my ipod the 4.2.1 software. But the problem is now when i plug it into my computer (an old ibook g4) it wont work because i need to new itunes to run the ipod with that software, and in order to download the new Itunes i need to upgrade my OS for $150.
Is there any way to downgrade the software? or will jailbreaking fix the problem?

i would say take it to the apple store but you already did that, and i dont know why they cant restore it.

I took it there, and they couldnt restore it idk why.
But i figured out how to restore it, but its got the new software that wont work which is the problem.

see if you can get it off the internet for cheaper. or buy the software of somebody for cheaper.

That's actually not true. I worked for them doing phone support, and you can actually upgrade your OS with the $29 upgrade disc or whatever it costs. Legally the employees at the apple store can't tell you that and have to tell you to buy the "full" version. But the upgrade will do the EXACT same thing for much less. I'd look into that if I were you. Windows is the same way.
