This is the Valentines Day slide from Mt Baker, 98-99 season. Takes a second to see it at first, but look at the crown at the top of the picture. I figure no serious avalanche awareness thread should start with anything less.

Post your slide stories, photo's, what have you, and learn up. The best awareness may indeed be freaky shit to properly seat the seriousness of this danger, especially with spring coming to the northern hemisphere and recent crazy activity around the PNW.

christ almighty. that is why the backcountry scares the shit out of my. coming from the east coast, i dream of getting the chance to ski out west. having no knowledge of the back country, this shit scares the living be-jesus out of me

Something huge slid on the arm last week at Baker as well, but the visibility has been so shitty that nobody has any pics. As far as everyone knows, nobody was buried, no cars in the parking lot, no beacons in whats been swept. Gunderson's been posting on TGR that old growth has been showing up in the debris field, and that its 100+ feet deep in places.

That is fucking GNAR. The beast and all the cliffs are just completely exposed now. Never seen anything like that.

On the ski out to blackcomb glacier there was a huuuge slide on one of last chutes on the left side. it looks like it was probably triggered by ski patrol but it took out trees and its just looks crazy.... iwould post pics but there on my phone and its currently broken, but yea its gnarly

I just got level 1 certified!! so excited!

Those pics are crazy. The tree ones really made me think. A friend of mine was caught in one and said it was the strongest force in every direction he'd ever felt. And it was just one of those things that was preventable

the arm at baker slid earlier this week. the WHOLE arm. bigger than 98'-99' slide. you should see this thing in person and how much it filled in oy valley. its in-fucking-credible.

people were skiing below this earlier that day. once they opened the other chair, everyone left and went to the chair. then it slid. the lifty at the top shack said that a couple people came up to him and said that when he told them they opened chair 6, that saved their lives. 15+ people could have been buried...

Does anyone have pictures of the slide at Jupiter at Park City a few years back? It wasnt big compared to these, maybe a 3-4 foot crown, but there was a chunk like the size of a car practically sitting against a lift tower. Pretty scary for inbounds...

These are HUGE, I had a few small slabs slide out under me yesterday inbounds. Not enough to take me off my feet or anything but still kinda freaky.

not really an avalanche, but happened at my local resort a few years back. luckily no one was on slope but it took two years to repair all the damage.

wait..those meadows pictures were this year? not last years? holy shit that looked bigger than the 2009/2010 season slide.

April 2009 on hood, after a 4' dump with lots of wind. We were complete idiots for going bc that day.

We were having lunch at the bottom of the slope we had been skiing, heard what sounded like bombing, but it was a natural release, ran up the other side of the canyon and watched our gear get swept away in the slide, crowns ranged from 1-6' feet. Buried 30'+ higher up the canyon (terrain trap).

Snowboarder out alone out of a gate at Vail, was lost for several days before someone cam across the tip of his board sticking out of the snow. If he was with someone he would've lived.

Please be careful this spring when youre out trying to bag those peak and lies youve been scoping all season.
