sorry, i dont know much about these kinds of things. is there anything i can try to make it work? Ive tried resetting the router and restarting the computer. it connects locally but not to the internet. could be the modem maybe?
I'll try to get the details ball rolling. Your computer Mac or Windows? How about your friend's? Is the network password protected or not? Make of each computer? Any other computers that can or cannot connect other than those two? Have you tried diagnosing the connection using Windows if that's the OS being used? Have any phones etc. that can connect? Can't think of everything right now but give as many details as you can
we have 3 laptops here right now, 2 are windows and 1 is a mac. the mac works and so does one of the windows though. the one that doesnt work is a windows and the make is a toshiba if that helps at all. and i tried connecting it directly to the router but that didnt work either. the network is password protected.
could it be the encryption or whatever its called that needs to be changes?
Is it Windows 7 or a different version? If it's Vista or 7, when it's connected to the local network, try right-clicking the connection and clicking status, then diagnose, or if it's XP you may see repair. See what happens when you do that.
This is really obvious but i didn't know the first time i had this problem. On mine (sony vaio fw) there is an actual switch to turn on/off wireless. Look for one on yours. You might have accidentally hit it.
Without the wireless being on he wouldn't have been able to connect locally to the network wirelessly, which is what he said he tried first. If it was off it would only have worked as a wired connection
