Jobs in Salt Lake

So 3 of us for sure are moving to the Salt Lake area this fall, and planning on staying out there for a full year...the only thing im really concerned about is finding a job, so my question for you locals is what is the job outlook like in Salt Lake? I'm not looking for some high paying one, one that just gets me by while I ski.

and also, any recommendations on areas to get a place to live for the year, we were thinking some where down by the U, but if there are better areas give me a shout.

There are a lot of on-campus jobs. Some of my friends work at the admissions office, I easily got a job as a parking attendent working the crappy visitor parking booths on campus. Plenty of jobs at shops / restaurants / ski areas to be had. It's not that hard to get a job if you actually try and present yourself in a good way.

For housing there are a lot of choices, myself and friends I know just rent out a 4 bedroom paying ~450 a month. I have several groups of friends living off campus for not a lot. Anywhere near the U is great.

VPS (valet parking services) seems like they're hiring pretty often. it doesn't pay a whole lot but most shifts are in the evening so you can ski all day then make some money after.
other than that there's always restaurants and shit looking for servers.

as far as housing goes, check out the Preserve on 9th south. it's 4 blocks from campus and a good many students live there so it's a dope place

do something you like doing, it makes the experience better. i work at alta and ski everyday, with coworkers who do the same and school at the same time.

thanks guys, really appreciate it...we are all really looking forward to getting out there, we spent 4 days out there last week and had a blast, and decided it was the place for us.

Do most of you have a pass to just one place? Because I was thinking of a pass to PC and a weekday pass to Solitude.

I had a Brighton, PC, and Snowbird pass in one year. I couldnt even out where I went, didn't work out that well. Now I just have one pass usually, I like it better that way. If I go to having 2 passes I'd defintely go Park City and Snowbird/Alta

get a brighton pass. Super sick place.  I have a pass there as well as Canyons.  depending on your age, you can get both for super cheap (along with other resorts).

Im 21, and yeah im stuck on where I want to have passes, I really loved PC and solitude, but would you guys say bird or alta over solitude?

i have ridden the bird for the past 2 years, before that i just went wherever i could get a cheap ticket.

you can get a pass at the bird for like 600 bucks if you are under 25 or something, it's not a bad deal at all.

i like riding the bird a lot, it's super rad and there is lots of really really awesome terrain.

BUT i also love solitude. it's more mellow, gets a little less snow than the bird, but it stays waay less busy and therefore not nearly tracked out as quick. there are lots of cool spots to ride at soli as well, it's just not like the cirque or baldy in most spots.

i' am up in the air about whether to get a pass at tude or the bird next year. it will probably depend on where my roommate and a few good friends get one.

really though, you can't go wrong anywhere in utah. it's splitting hairs in the wasatch.

and for jobs, the bird is pretty easy to find work at, even mid season. a buddy came down from id this jan/feb and got a job in like 3 days. apart from resorts, it's not that hard to get a job if you are motivated at all or have a specific skill/resume highlight. i'd say get out here as early as you can in the year, find work, decently cheap housing, and then get ready to ride.

there are lots of threads on here about where to live in slc, stuff like that, you'll prob. get a lot of info if you just peruse this forum.

if you're gonna skibum it then working at a mountain is well worth it for the pass. it doesn't necessarily pay the best, but if you get to shred near everyday.. word. when i moved to utah i just applied at snowbird for everything i was relatively qualified for and then just pestered their recruiting department till they hired me. be persistant and especially if you have a skill that stands out on a resume, you'll get a job no problem. just if you're looking for a job at a mountain start applying before they even start hiring. if you get in early and are persistent, you're golden.

Curious as to how many seasons you worked at a resort and what your gig was? My experiences of over a decade of working at a resort was great. The perks were awesome great friends, decent coin, patrol telling you when things would open, midnight full moon cat rides, a shop/lockers to keep all your gear,free food/drinks, the bro deal barter system, free passes for me and the wife, discount passes to other resorts and for homies, less driving etc. I guess it's more about when you work and what your skills are.

depends on what you do. i ski every single day, about an hour each day with 2 days off a week which isnt too bad. some other places to half day schedules with their employees, aka shred everyday.

Fully agree....find a job where shifts start no earlier than 3.

You may get to ski every day if you work at the mountain, but on great pow days you'll be kicking yourself for being limited to skiing only a few hours.

Im gonna have to disagree. If you are a dawn patrol kind of guy, then yes. If you just hot lap the park majority of the time, then no.

yeah this dude has it right. you other people are kind of right, but only SOME mountain jobs suck. if you can get any night job at a mountain it's prime. being a lifty on the other hand blows. you don't ever get to ski and standing by and watching people lat 2 feet of fresh is the worst thing i've ever done. but if you have a good job with all of ^^those^^ perks are available, it's the shit!!

i just checked out some of your videos and realized who you are. i don't know if you remember me, i shredded at snowbird last year, i'm one of wonka's homies. my name is adam, i was in a brown and army green suit last year. we only skied a couple runs together, but i remember you telling me that you're a ski coach or something? your situation is far better than most.

coach a little, currently just working nights at a certain local purveyor of outdoor equipment. life is good when you can ski 7 basically full days a week. a run here and there doesn't cut it for me.

not completly true. liftys at alta work 45 minute shifts, and then have 45 mins to ski. thats 2 good runs atleast, more if you're haulin.

do that all day long, 5 days a week and your set
