Everyone knows about the proximity and quality of skiing in Utah. One thing I think that is overlooked is the quality of education available at the U. This article http://www.economist.com/node/18284013 explains why Mormon culture breads success and I'm of the opinion that this attitude of "self improvement" can be gleamed by non-mormon at the school. On the other hand as long as you have a pulse, they'll let you in, so there's something for everybody. Also tuition is pretty cheep.

utah is sandwiched in between a bunch of medical marijuana friendly states.

colorado, montana, arizona, nevada, and then if you consider even further away you have california, oregon, and wash.


even if the state is one of the most republican and anti-progressive states in the country its not like you cant find some good weed. listening to 105.7 in slc is interesting. its conservative talk radio for utah and it has a lot of propaganda going on that channel.

trax is probably one of the best transit systems for a city that isn't ever overly dense (like chicago, nyc, etc)

if only trax went to the airport you could avoid renting a vehicle altogether if thats your style

im in the same exact situation as this. im in ohio though so im really trying to pull all my info from the one trip i took out there to see the schools to make my decision. needless to say this has been difficult. i would like some help deciding as well

I know several people attending the U from Ohio, cinci, clevelend, akron, other places and they all enjoy it. The dorms have a lot of out of state people who are in similar situations as you would be if you came here. I myself am from California and I love it here.

Dunno what info you're looking for but I can most certainly provide you with any detail about the U you'd like. I've done work the Orientation group here, working on panels for incoming freshman as well as talking to incoming students from California.

Have you ever been to college? Its mad easy to take class only two days a week, I only have class monday and wednesday and tuesday night, i can ski 5 days a week if i want, 7 days if i go night skiing. Granted, i only go up 3-4 times a week, i could go everyday. if there was a bus to PC id consider going more, so much driving.

um yea im in my third year of school so i am aware of the scheduling possibilities granted i cant get the 2 days of class/week that your talking about.  i was completely unaware of the night skiing possibilites tho so i retract my previous post

few notable gripes about slc

-lcc needs a monorail which connects bcc and park city. (build a damn tunnel)
-salt lake smells like shit at times from the brine shrimp
-the city does have pockets of ghettos and its reallllly mexican in a lot of areas. also it seems like its really a big industrial city at times when you drive by tons of factories/warehouses, mining/cement facilities, smoke stacks, and who knows what else.
-34-41% of SLC population is still mormon. this 49 year old retired guy (owned a bar in a port cruise ships frequented and sold it for bank when he was 35?) and hes been living in park city for 14 years and he gripes about the mormons and how they just want to "breed and indoctrine the people". Basically it makes you hyperaware of everyone and how they act, so us out of towners can just so psssh! mormons! every time something happens we find odd.
-mt superior needs a lift
-the citys unique roadways take time to get used to. many roads in utah have designated lanes for merging traffic that allow you to merge on to busy 4 lane roads without stopping and this and that......its not something i am used to.
-the city has this kind of odd eerie sense going when im there it seems like. First of all you can drive "forever" it seems and just get to different areas (some bad) and you are still just driving forever through "town?". And i guess thats it...the "town" here never stops if you are travelling north and south. the wasatch front is a friggin mega-giganticopolis. but then you hear that something like 93% of utah's population is right there in the wasatch front. and you look off in to the darkness that is beyond where you even care to drive....and you wonder....how many dead bodies are there out there?
-the smoggggggggggg man what the fuck you guys will all be the first to die (in the event of an apocalypse and you have to run if you keep inhaling that shit.

something about the desert and night time just gets to me.


Its an acquired lifestyle to live out in SLC. It is really quite a fuckin trendy ass city full of motherfucking hipsters. i like to visit, but i don't know if i would stay?

i bet i would feel the same way in california. something about seeing endless amounts of light at night time as well gets to me. like valleys upon valleys of houses and business. its like why cant you just build up like chicago and NYC?

when you see flat land taken over it feels like "nothing". but when you feel like you can see all the way across the valley and see man take over everything in his path. its like woahhhh. and then you see them just drilling and digging away out there.....with no concern for air quality it would appear (with all the digging you guys do).

slc should try and suspend giant air filters in the air. the air is siiiiiiiiiick looking.


i mean the skiing kicks ass and the pow is awesome and yea its sweet. i guess some people knock on the wasatch because the vertical rise isn't necessarily the highest in america but who cares? you can still ski your legs off and jump off huge cliffs.

everytime i go in slc i just get this trippy kinda feeling. staying in these cheap hotel rooms that i feel prostitutes and meth have both been done in.

slc is like the crossroads of the west.

Just because you came in the 1-2 month period when we have inversion doesn't mean it happens every day of the year. January and SOMETIMES february there is some bad inversion periods, but otherwise the air quality is amazing.



And skinners/locals would kill snowbird (alta never would) if they build a lift up superior.

Because college classes are efficient unlike high school. Each class has a number of credit hours, this number represents hours per week you go to that class. I have 4 classes, 3 are 3 credit hours one is 4 credit hours. I have 3 classes from 940-245 on mon/wed and tues night 6-9pm. Some majors are more convenient than others, it really depends on how they schedule everything but its pretty easy to take class twice a week/at night unless you're an engineering major or a major of similar difficulty.

Really man? LCC is hallowed ground. The last thing we need is more development beyond what already exists. We need the backcountry to retreat to the day after a storm when the resorts are trashed and the snowpack has settled.

The State liquor stores are one of a kind and make you kind of chuckle when you get to town. the fact that you can't buy malt beverages in the store because they banned them I guess?

For instance if I want to buy liquor, beer, mikes hard lemonade, or wine I can go to any party store or grocery store in Michigan up until 2 A.M. and buy it. And I can continue buying at like 6 in the morning everyday but sunday (noon for sunday).

I don't have to make sure I make it to the state liquor store to buy real beer by like 9 PM when they close. I might be exaggerating with this 9pm time and I think it really is 10pm. but whatever. Second shift people aren't even off work yet!

The absence of any real liquor store, but the state liquor store is new and unique. Here in michigan we have "real liquor stores" all over the place. You walk in and you can buy everything from high times magazines to churros and zingers. But the state liquor store in utah is just a store full of liquor with undercover people walking the aisles, and a guy up front whose entire job is to just sit and watch the store.

I guess I think its just REALLLLLLY SILLY that a republican state like yourself would let government get so involved in our personal lives like this. Stand up for your shit eheath!

slc lacks a decent population of african americans. i would guess the town is more invested in meth than it is crack.

Especially since just down i-15 a few hours they are probably smuggling the shit to make it in to the country. I bet they make a ton of meth right in SLC

I mean, alot of states have state liquor stores and alot of states have liquor stores close at 10pm or earlier, have you been anywhere else in the world other than michigan? Yeah it is stupid you cant buy malt liquor, beer or wine at the grocery store, but utah isnt the only state that does it, and there is 4%(3.2%) beer is in a couple different states too. For some reason the momos think if they make stupid laws about liquor we wont get drunk, but they still fail to realize that you can buy a handle of vodka from the liquor store for 10 bucks, its like they dont understand how to get drunk. Recently they're passing a bill that will make it so bars can't have daily specials because it promotes overconsumption of alcohol, but they fail to realize that you can buy a 30 for 15 bucks at smiths. The political figures in utah are fucking stupid, fucking old and fucking mormon its gonna be 1000 times better when the new generation of senators/congressmen come into office.

eheath, brosifra don't compare yourself to other states. NYC, Chicago both have liquor stores open till 4 A.M, and the club's don't close until 5 or 6 (legally sanctioned events).

Meanwhile Hairy-O's won't even let a show run past 1

Utah has taken many measures to curb or fuck up my consumption of alcohol. To go over the various odd restrictions once again

1. state liquor stores. okay not a MANDATORY stop unless you are an alcoholic , but if you are picking up drink to take home this is the place to go.
2. state liquor stores close way fucking early. im not motherfucking joking here I just went to http://abc.utah.gov/stores/index.html and found a store that closed at 7pm......
3. state liquor stores are closed on sundays
4. they have some funky mixed drink law. I guess you can't pour 2 shots of 40% alcohol in a single drink legally. But you can pour a shot of 40% alcohol and a shot of like dekyuper whatever flavoring at 17% and its still fine? I noticed at restaurants they would still sell drinks with more than one liquor so I had to ask. What this means basically is that a long island ice tea does not exist in Utah.
5. you brought up a great new one....banning happy hour? GET THOSE GOD DAMN MOTHERFUCKERS OUT OF MY LIFE, THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MOTHERFUCKING REPUBLICAN GOD DMANIT. THAT MEANS LESS GOVERNMENT. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS IRONIC SHIT
6. yeah so my girlfriend drinks but she drinks those malt beverages and shit and we were at the GROCERY STORE, and we couldn't find any. and they don't sell liquor at grocery stores it seems either. And its like 9:40 at night and we try and make it to a state liquor store but it was fucking closed by the time we got there and we basically concluded republican mormons are functioning retards who have no clue what LIMITED MOTHERFUCKING GOVERNMENT MEANS.

Just kidding, I would be pissed too if mexicans moved in and started putting up motherfucking billboards in spanish for mcdonalds everywhere.

I learned more mexican in one trip to utah than I have in any classroom ever. (jk)

oh and by the way, the copper onion, vinto, settebello, braza grill, red rock brewery, porcupine, and squatters are all delicious. We were hoping to try Metropolitan out one night but we didn't stay enough this time. I've spent many nights now in SLC trying the foods and being disappointed, but I have finally found a handful of restaurants that are wicked.

Here is another thing about SLC I notice,, you guys put your money where your mouth is. I mean this by you say you want cleaner ways to produce energy and you might actually mean it because I've never seen as many natural gas vehicles as I have in SLC. Most restaurants I visit made a point of it to try and note all the local sourced foods in the menu.

Your town really is progressive as hell compared to the politics. It seems really dynamic and trendy. It still has kind of a weird tinge to it and after like 34 days of vacationing there I still haven't quite figured it out. im out of my element here.

Im mean sure, they have a bunch of silly rules, but honestly its not that hard to get to the liquor store before 10pm and yeah not being able to drink doubles sucks but it doesn't mean you can't get drunk. And you don't need liquor on a sunday, jesus.

Nobody in their right mind moves to UT because it's a liberal state or to party hard.Most of us are here because the skiing, fishing, climbing, mnt biking and other outdoor recreation ops are phenominal and you are pretty centally located to places like Las Vegas where you can get your party freak on.

Seriously did you really come out here for vacation and all you have to show for it is stupid rants about how UT could be so much better?

SLC is the crossroads of the west that is for sure.

I just like to bash Utah because at the same time as everyone puts it up as the holy grail of skiing....it is not without faults.

Oh and the Superior lift will def. be going in :) along with a monorail from the airport to alta.

I will get rich, build that shit and call it the A2A train. Airport 2 Alta train. And charge like 60 bux a pop, and get a crib next to Mr. Bass

Republicans in your state suck at being republican though. They are like democrats tryin to get in my shit but they say they are republicans. It is like magic.
