My Verdict on Slacklining is in

So I've been searching through a bunch of threads over the past couple of days trying to figure out what I want to do this summer....On the list of things I've seen 1) Get a Job. 2) Skate. 3) Fruitboot. 4) Slackline.

Options 1 and 2 are a definite for me this summer, but I still want more.

I did some research on fruitbooting and aggressive inline looks a bit goofy to me and I don't want to drop 200 bucks on good skates. So I threw that option out.

Finally I started looking into slacklining and noticed that a TON of people are hating on it. Yesterday on a thread i read "I'd rather disembowel a cat than slackline." Even though this person must have some sort of hatred for the feline species I really didn't think a sport deserved such hate. Reading further I find out "slacklining is not a sport, it's just hipsters in parks on tightropes".

So here's to all the haters, the bored kids this summer, and people looking to get an edge up for next ski season in the balance department. If this doesn't prove to you that slacklining is a sport and that there's a huge amount of room for progression in the sport, go die in a hole. I'll be enjoying my new Gibbon Jibline this summer regardless of what you think.

i went to SurfExpo in January in orlando and Gibbons slackline had a big booth and demo there. i still dont really know why they were at surfexpo, but thats besides the point. looked kinda wack to me.

balance builder maybe? They've gotta have a pretty good market as what athlete couldn't use better balance? ....in the video they swing side to side on it which looks a bit like surfing if you tilt your head and squint

I've tried it a few times. It was kinda like a boring trampoline, but you had to concentrate on balancing at the same time. Not very fun, IMO. I'll stick to tramps, and maybe play around on an indo board if I want to test my balance.

well that obviously needs an extreme skill of balance i mean come on, how many of you can backflip or frontfil or do anything for that matter on a rope of sorts. looks pretty cool. looks like parkour people got hold of a rope.

but don't count inline out, you can get skates for under or around 100 dollars.

cool thing is if you're actually tricklining it's essentially a portable trampoline....people are throwing corks, rodeos, etc off of it and it fits in a backpack.... definitely a utility there that tramps don't have

I have a slackline and it is sick. Its a nice way to spend time with your friends and its actually pretty cheap.

it's an actual mode of transportation, aka you can travel around town and hit different spots with your friends while building muscles. Balance training very close to skiing. Grinding pretty close to skiing grinding.

I don't even want to know what they charge for that glorified comealong specific for slacklining. I thought people used webbing or rope for this, not a three inch wide nylon strip.

OK, that video absolutely belongs in the dictionary next to the word/phrase "attention whores". Seriously, go practice your "sport" in the most public places possible, and literally scream WATCH ME!!! WATCH ME!!! They succeeded in getting two people to clap, which absolutely made it into the video. In my opinion, that video featured a bunch of douchebags.

Also, it is worth noting that the "slackline" featured in the video was not a slackline at all, but a "cheat line". It was extremely wide, much much more so than a normal slacking. It also did not even appear to be webbing! The video was absolutely not a representation of what slacklining is, or what it is about. I guess this falls into the "hate" category, but it is the truth. I have no problem with slacklining, especially if it is not for the sole purpose of being an attention whore.

check this thread about skating see what people are doing. and yeah go to rollerwarehosue and there's a section for skates under 100 dollars. and there's also skates that are around 100 dollars too.

how can you possibly think rollerblading looks goofy?
some tricks for sure and style is infinitely harder to have than in skiing but it's a blast
you can get some cheap skates on ebay or something
hit up aggressivemall.com, rollerwarehouse, bakerized, etc
there are tons of shops around

i'd also like to learn to slackline but i'm learning tenor sax and hopefully working as a lifeguard instead

small town kid, 15 mins from pavement, and not many of my friends are gonna drop money on skates....my perks for slackline is 1 slackline for 10 friends instead of 10 friends buying 10 skates or whatever...plus I can do it where I live

Mmm I dont use gibbon, I think they are way to wide. They are around 50mm and I use a 27mm wide and 20 meters long line with 3 carabiners. Just go to any hiking store, they should have lines.

The line they're using is called a Gibbon Jibline...it was made to have more grip and give more height for flips and whatnot...cheat line may be a bit harsh....and sure they're being attention whores I guess...but they're also sponsored by Gibbon...it was probably more of a promotional stunt than anything...

i wouldnt buy a who slackline kit,like a gibbon. you can make the whole thing for about 40 dollars with a hundred feet of 1" tubular webbing and a few carabiners.

wait a second... slacklining is just tieing a ratchet strap to two objects?


i "slackline" all the time. usually when somebodys car gets stuck in the winter, i take the "slackline" out of the back of my truck and then use the "slackline" to pull them out.

there is nothing better then going to the beach, smoking some bowls with your buddies, and slack lining. plus only one person needs to have one and you could all pitch in to buy one instead of everyone needing to buy a set up.

imo don't buy a pre-made kit, like a gibbon, but to the "primitive" set up. If you don't know what that is just search in youtube "slack line primitive" and there are all sorts of tutorials and stuff that show you how to put a kit together.

no one around me really fruit boots, and Ive never done it, so i cant really comment on which is more fun. In my OPINION it looks sort of goofy but if you think its cool and a fun way to spend your time then go for it, don't give a fuck about what other people say.

I just went with buying basic webbing and biners like everyone else is saying. But I definitely wouldn't rule out fruitbooting. Similar to skiing when you're used to snowboarding (or vice versa), it's so nice to be able to experience a skatepark in a completely different way. All the lines and shit you like to do on a board is way different on skates, in a good way. And there is no doubt that it helps a ton with skiing.
