What should my first beer be?

NSG I'll be 21 this April and I've never drank any alcohol before, what would you guys suggest for my first drink? Looking for something not too shitty, but I mean if you guys think I should start off low, by all means let me know. Suggestions? And post up what your first beer or drink was.

also i cant believe you have never drunk before. maybe something like grolsch by the bottle but i think fresh out of the tap is probably more satisfying for a first beer so not sure.

Heineken is good mixed 50/50 with lemonade (called rattler(sp?)) but other than that i cant drink it.

If you can find it, Trappistes Rochefort 10. Definitely the best beer in this thread, as agreed upon by anyone who knows anything about beer.

If you drink this as your first beer I personally guarantee that you will absolutely hate it.

As said multiple times in this thread start off with something really simple like a lager or an ale.

Meh, matter of opinion. I'd take a circus boy over a number nine any day of the week. Vinyl is good though, and the spring variety packs are out now with the darker DEMO which is a black IPA.

For the person above asking where to get it, magic hat is out of vermont and available pretty much anywhere in the mid atlantic and north. Don't know about down south.

One of the top ten, if not the best beer I've ever had... me and my roommate have been trying for a year to find something we both liked better, and have failed and failed again... we have well over 200 bottles (we passed 99 bottles on the wall a loong tim ago) of craft brews from around the world up on display in our place... (some are hidden... we've run out of room...) none compare to this beer... not even others from the same brewery.

I can't even explain it...

It's like a barleywine... but light... with a bit of a an apply cidery taste... it's 9.0abv, but it doesnt even dry out your mouth like other high abv's will... and it's downright refreshing.

It's just straight DIFFERENT.. and that might be why I like it so much... I haven't found ANYTHING like it.

550ml's of gnarly awesomeness.

hahaha Ian brought them down here over the summer from the factory. I guess Magic Hat has tons of beers up there that you can only get there and not in stores. If you make the trek up there, get the ginger. FULL OF WIN!

I was there last month and brought home 6 growlers. Didn't see any ginger beer though. Some crazy raspberry stout though.

Definitely all a matter of taste. I really enjoy their Circus Boy offering.

Compared to Long Trail, Magic Hat is a very different brewery. Long Trail tends to play it pretty conservative and more traditional whereas Magic Hat goes a little more eclectic. Magic Hat hits some home runs in my book and then fails miserably on some others it seems. Long Trail is consistently solid, but nothing absolutely mind-blowing.

That said, hefeweizens seem to consistently be my favorite beer variety for the most past.

I hear a lot of love for Magic Hat... but honestly? after my roomie brought a few selections out for me to try? (he's from there) I found it rather disappointing and non-deservant of the hype... in all the selections I tried... (I still enjoyed it, but Im pretty critical of beer now, and I rate beers quite brutally)

#9 was a boring pale ale... nothing special, and I wasn't all impressed even if you compared it to other pale ales from breweries like Full Sail, Flying Dog, and Sierra Nevada. I rate it 7.8/10

Circus boy is a hef... and I'm not too fond of any wheat beer to begin with and think they're a bit girly, or for people who dont really know beer... but as far as Hefs are concearned, it wasn't my favourite.

Single Chair is awesome because of it's logo (yee mad river glen, werd), and decent, but by no means amazing as far as the content. I liked it, and enjoyed it... but it was still meh.

I guess if roomie had brought back a Brown, or a stout or a porter from them I probably would have been far more stoked on it, but then he informed me that they don't even offer a stout except if you go to their brewery and get lucky that they have their oatmeal stout on tap (they make only ONE kind of stout!? in a cold state like VERMONT?), and they only have a porter for 3 or 4 months out of the year. Shit's downright preposterous...

You would probably like the DEMO or Vinyl that they have going on right now.

I agree that the number9 isn't the best and a little too fruity for me.

I like a hefe so the circus boy is legit in my eyes. I'm a fan of a smooth easy going beer though, I appreciate beers that are thick and full of flavor, just don't like to put em down on a regular basis in large quantities.

Single chair ale is probably my favorite offering from magic hat, in that is has a great taste but is still nice and smooth and not very overpowering. Nice and refreshing.

What steve said is right on as far as magic hat and long trail. I'd compare magic hat to dogfish head in their crazy brewing, sometimes it's hit or miss.

Now that you say it though, magic hat should do something darker and full to compete with long trails hibernator or double bag. Especially being way up in the frigid north of VT.

Call me a prissy bitch, but I am not a fan of stouts or porters.

I had the highly regarded Gonzo porter from Flying Dog and felt like I was drinking tar. Just not my taste.

Yeah... when my roomie told me they only have 1 porter and one stout offering i nearly lost respect for the brewery lol. I mean... I could understand if they were from Southern California and brewing that shit but COME ON... Most breweries in the Northwest have 2, 3, 4, if not 7 or 8 different Porters and Stouts...

Gonzo's a bit gnar though... 9.4% imperial porter? if you're not a fan of real dark beers, that's not one to go for... try a Sam Adams' Cream Stout, next time, you might enjoy that more.
