What should my first beer be?

NSG I'll be 21 this April and I've never drank any alcohol before, what would you guys suggest for my first drink? Looking for something not too shitty, but I mean if you guys think I should start off low, by all means let me know. Suggestions? And post up what your first beer or drink was.

Blue Point Toasted Lager, one of the best all around good and easy drinking beers I've ever had. Lagers are a good beer to start on anyway.

And while I love the country, the people, the food, the sports.......making BEER, together with pronouncing french words, is precisely what the Americans SUCK at. :D

So GBURNZ, just try to get hold of a beer from continental Europe (not England, for god's sake!) except Heineken and Becks (no, no, no!) and be happy!

Popular brands that you might get hold of in a big supermarket: Warsteiner, Paulaner (Hefeweizen), Augustiner, Löwenbräu, Erdinger (Hefeweizen), Edelweiss (Hefeweizen), Tuborg, Carlsberg.

yea I agree with all that. You definitely have to sample around to be able to appreciate what you're drinking. Don't just dive headfirst into the best stuff, because odds are, you won't think its good.

Boston Lager is good...but not hoppy.

By german flavour you mean tasteless right? Cause germany has that purity law about not being allowed to have more than i think 4 ingredients in beer, including water as one them. It means they all taste the same and aren't that great unless you happen upon a really good unique beer. But in all honesty, go get a bottle of whiskey and take shots till you're smashed. stay classy.

Way too bitter for me, and I tend to like most IPAs. Try Dales Pale Ale. or almost any wheat beer from a like a craft brewer are usually pretty light and easy to drink.

yuengling actually if that's what you were going for. Staple of the keystone state for sure. Order a plain old "Lager" pretty much anywhere in the keystone state and that's what you'll get. With that said it's not bad for a cheap beer.

the only constant is water. theres are countless hop. grain(malt) and yeast varieties.

they taste amazing.. you have no idea.. what so ever, i bet you had a becks and concluded that German beers taste like that.

to the OP. go to a Tap room. and try some beers out.. get a taster plate... i doubt at first you are going to enjoy hopped up beers... but then again.. over malted beers suck as well. taste and enjoy and props on making it to 21!

haha it's really not all that great, maybe the black and tan. Just a standard lager pretty much. Tell you're buddy rolling rock is better and watch him laugh.

Pretty sure they don't distribute out west or even far to the north or south.

Always blue moon. I always buy cheap stuff for myself because I can't afford anything remotely nice, but if I'm with my dad and he's buying I go blue moon every time.

For real fun if your near the magic hat brewery, get a growler of nine and one of circus boy, then mix the two in a glass. mmmmmm circus 9.

Awwweh, someone's a little butthurt over them thinking their german heritage is being insulted. Go try a belgian beer then come back to me. That's what a real beer should taste like. Full of all sorts of flavour and excitement. You can have a million types of flour, but brownies are going to taste only so good if you have a limit of 3 other ingredients. Doesn't matter what quality they are. Just in general, german beer is a lot more bland and has much more likelyhood of tasting the same to each. you're so full of it. Comparing different flours to different kinds of hops??? really?? that's like saying all strains of weed taste the same cause it's just one type of plant.

Also geographically speaking, bitching between german or belgian beer is like saying PA and NY beer are completely different. Not really dude.

Yeah, it's too hoppy for all but the heartiest beer drinkers. Never had a Dales, but I've yet to find a beer that I don't like. I'll have to keep my eyes open for that.

This is such a great beer, but to play it safe. I would just drink Bud Light. OR even Corona very light beers. Keep in mind not many people like the bitter taste of beer their first time. its an acquired taste. Just take it slow and enjoy your night my friend.

beer from Belgium is great... ... i love lambic... the idea on how they get yeast in to the beer is so contradictory to how you brew beer normally... i mean. having a barn full of wort and then opening the doors and letting the natural yeast.. come in and start up camp..... amazing. but you already know that cause your the king of beers right. im sorry. to get caught up on an E fight . but you called me out. and your obvious ignorance to the good beers of Bavaria and the lagers of Bohemia. shows that you had some trappest ale and you got all fucking giddy and you dont know your shit at all.

and it does not matter.. cause the best beer in the fucking world is brewing the the state of OREGON!
and the rest of Cascadia is good to boot as well.

Don't recall saying hops didn't make a difference. I do recall trying to get across that no matter what amazing variety of hops you have, you just won't be able to make the best beer if you're legally not allowed to have more than 4 ingredients. Water, hops, yeast, and most likely a sort of grain. That is why german beer will never be the best in the world. And also why a large quantity of it tastes very similar. If you give a hundred bakers only 4 ingredients to bake a cake, there's only so much they can do with it and in the end most of those cakes are going to taste damn similar. I realize tasteless really isn't the right word, but the taste of german beers just isn't nearly as diverse as say english beers as they can legally only put in 4 things. It's a purity law they have. Their beer is still pretty damn amazing, but could be a million times better were they allowed to add extra of whatever the hell they like for flavour. And yes, yes i have brewed beer. And have made wine and moonshine. I'd say i know at least a tiny bit more than nothing about it.

also, lets be real, if this really is your first beer, they are all going to taste interesting to you and maybe not the best. AND if you're out with your friends, you'll be doing shots anyways so beers won't matter.
