What should my first beer be?

NSG I'll be 21 this April and I've never drank any alcohol before, what would you guys suggest for my first drink? Looking for something not too shitty, but I mean if you guys think I should start off low, by all means let me know. Suggestions? And post up what your first beer or drink was.

Heineken is actually a dutch beer..

But if you've never drank before you're probably not going to like the taste of beer right away anyway. Just go with whatevers popular in your area.

You're going to want to just try as many different ones as you can though. Get a taste for what you like.

Heineken is absolutely terrible and I have had it in europe, no better, it was still piss water. "american beer" is a serious amount of options, and is not terrible.

Im surprised nobody has said Leinenkugel yet. Its not imported, but american beer built with a german flavor.


Classic Amber and Honey Weiss are both fantastic IMO.

these three are what you should drink after you can appreciate good and bad. probably not the best idea to start with the nicest, because it'll all taste like shit at first and you wont appreciate it

good point...I never even thought of sam. Its an excellent beer. Would definitely be a good starting point. Not an absolutely astounding beer so you can move onwards, but just a solid drink.

drive to burlington, go to magic hat, sample all their beers for free. prime. then buy a growler of the one you like the best.

or listen to the guy who named off some NY local brews, less money spent on gas.

Odds are you will find it tastes like shit at first anyways, so don't waste your money on something expensive up front.

I actually do think Sam Adams would be a good choice. It's not expensive, but not shitty either. It's a pretty neutral flavor. Those suggesting hoppy beers need to check the thread. Someone having their first beer is more than likely going to find a hoppy beer repulsive.

Forgot to add, I didn't drink until I was 21 either. This was my first beer. I think its a pretty tasty beer. It's become my go to beer. Do it right and garnish with an orange slice. Then after you finish, you are rewarded with a tasty snack.

Boston lager is FAR from hoppy. It may have a stronger mouth feel than a light beer, but it is FAR from hoppy.

There were people suggesting Porters and strong IPAs... Not exactly the best recommendation for someone who in all odds will not be able to appreciate the taste.

If you think Boston Lager is hoppy you need to put down the Coors Light.

Honestly im only 20 but fly and travel a lot, spent a lot of time in the bars and if you've never drank before id go with some liquor like a mixed drink or take the easy route and take what ever is on tap. Dark beers are more flavorful then lighter beers. Liquor before beer and your in the clear. Have fun its a blast, be careful tho shit gets fuzzy quick.

This. If you drink an IPA or any other "hoppy" beer like so many people on here suggested, you probably won't like it and think its too bitter.  I would stick to pilsners or hefeweizens if I was you. 

If you are willing to do shots you have to get a chocolate cake shot on your birthday:1/2 fangelico and 1/2 vanilla vokda. After you take the shot bite into a lemon wedge covered in suger - tastes just like a piece of rich chocolate cake.  I always get the on my birthday

I think Sam Adams sucks (for an expensive beer anyways). I wouldn't go for a super hoppy beer either, it's kind of an acquired taste. I would recommend a random amber from a smaller brewery. I consider amber ales the standard type of beer so I think you should start there.
