Mormons in utah (SLC area)

I'm having trouble telling how serious of an issue this is. We are thinking of moving to the SLC area in the next year. I'm a chiropractor and will be opening an office there and i'm just wondering how big of an issue the LDS thing really is? some people say it is so bad they had to relocate their family, others say they barely even notice....and some stats say its like less than 50% and others say its 83% in the nicer burbs, and we would be looking for one of the nicer suburbs like Sandy or one of the Jordans....

I want SLC for how close it is to the mountains but it is DEFINITELY not worth it if its going to be a sacrifice, and my wife is already freaked about it. Our next two choices are Portland, OR or somewhere in CO, so either way i'll be close to the mtns because that is a must, but what are some thoughts from some UT people? Thanks

The biggest inconvenience for me is that nothing is ever open on Sunday. Other than that, I don't really find it to be much of an issue.

It's really not a problem. Anyone who says that Mormons have caused them to relocate their family are either delusional or had young children and where living next to an FLDS compound somewhere in the desert.

yeah whoever this person was said that they got completely shunned in their neighborhood to the point where the LDS kids weren't allowed to hang out with their kids, and once they realized that they weren't going to convert the entire neighborhood gave them the cold shoulder. sounds like some weird ass shit that i didn't want to risk....but theres weird shit everywhere too

Stay AWAY! They are horrible. Ruin everything. YOU WILL TURN INTO A MORMON. Argh blah blah. SLC is a mess. They dont even sell alcohol in the state and the girls no fuck. Gapers everywhere. Horrible thick powder thats un-skiable. Dont even mess with that place.

I repeat, stay away from SLC. Worst decision ever.

Portland's a way better location. Not as close to sick mountains, but jesus, it's going to be such a better place to live in my opinion. Way more diverse population, LARGER population, and way chiller population.

Plus, Portland's a place that's growing well, and has awesome air quality, and beautiful surrounding area and its closer to the ocean if you like that sorta shit. It rains a lot, but that usually means epic dumpage at meadows and skibowl, so its all good at the end...

I've never lived in Utah, but I've been there enough times to know that if it's ever GOING to be a problem its when you're living in more of the suburban areas, anyway, rather than the city centre - or at least thats what it seems.

I have however lived in oregon, as I live there now... and I love the vibe in this state... and portland's a great spot.

Crooked Line's the only one I know of... other than that... beer thats 3% alcohol is only good if you want to drink a lot of it.

The Wasatch beers are pretty good too. The 3.2% is by weight (not volume), and if you go to a liquor store it's higher. It's kind of annoying I guess, but I don't think it's really a big deal. Besides, if you're drinking to get hammered, just go for tequila.

So what parts are you worried about? What do you actually think is going to happen?

On a day to day basis you won't notice anything. CO has the same liquor laws, so its equal there.

There are much more important things to think about when deciding where you want to live than "if there are Mormons."
Economy? Climate? Activities? Good schools? Cost of housing?

The fact that there are a couple Mormon buildings in SLC won't effect you. You might even like to check out the ridiculous ancestry records (ancestry.com, thats the Mormons). I'm not saying Utah is what you should chose, (it might be a bad choice for you), I am just saying that "Mormons" shouldn't be considered as part of your decision process.

I haven't noticed anything up here in Park City, but it could be different down in SLC.

If you have your heart set on Utah, but Mormons are a frightening prospect, try Park City. Only place in Utah where mormons are not a majority (or so I'm told)

I have been in SLC since january, not long i know, but i havent noticed any problems with the mormons. the alcohol laws are the worst part, but still not THAT big of a deal. I gave a guy a ride down from Alta the other day and he lives in Sandy and says it is completely full of mormons and had had some problems with people not respecting or treating him as an equal, and that his kids get alot of shit from some of the mormon kids. I think the mormons as a whole are not bad people, and are dont care whether you are mormon or not, but there are those that will treat you differently because of it. but in the end, the skiing here outweighs any issue with the LDS.

My dad commutes from Denver to Utah instead of living there. Personally I spend enough time in Utah to say I could not live there. Unless I was in park city (which I love) or St. George.

you are stupid. do you really think my only concern is "are there mormons"?!? maybe i should have specified, i guess. Probably not since you are the only one who misunderstood, but let me clarify.

I have obviously looked at the other factors regarding SLC. Quite frankly I didn't think I should ask my ski community about the fucking economy, because I probably know more about it than you. My only concern is THE MORMONS, and that's why I asked.

And, its not like there are "a couple mormon buildings in SLC". It is the basis for the entire community there, and I am wondering how it affects non-mormons, like myself and other skiers, who I assume to be alot like me. And it SHOULD be a big part of my decision, because it is literally the only city in America where I need to worry about my family or my business suffering because of religious discrimination, so yeah, its kinda important.

Everybody else, thanks for the advice, it has helped alot.

But I was just trying to explain how it isn't as large of a problem as you think. I would be worried about discrimination and intolerance if you moved to a small southern bible belt town and weren't an extremely religious Protestant. Salt Lake City isn't like that.

i could go on and on about why slc is a great town but if you dont want to move here because of the mormons its your loss. i moved here from one of the most liberal places in the region and i dont mind the religious influence or dumb laws. you learn to deal with them. mormoms are good people. there religion promotes being good and nice people and it shows. they wont convert your kids or hate you for drinking a beer. salt lake is an extremely clean and nice city and it is mainly because of mormons.

oh and the beer here is awesome, some of the best in the country. its 4% at gas stations but higher percentage beer is available at the liquor stores and breweries in bottles. kegs are illegal, unless you brew the beer yourself. i have a keg of 9% dub ipa homebrew in my fridge right now :)

Honestly, this has been my experience as well. People hate on the mormons all the time, but as a whole I've found them to be extremely nice, friendly, and very, very polite. If anything, I've seen my friends be pretty downright shitty to mormon kids, and they didn't say a word back. It made me want to apologize on my friends behalf for being such assholes.

And Gordo, I'm gonna come steal that keg!

Utah ruined my whole college experience just saying. As long as you stay in slc you'll be fine in regard to possession charge, do not get caught out of slc unless you want to be fucked in tha ass You can also get harder drugs if you want too from the mexi's i wouldn' suggest buying coke from them because  it's shit but they do have nice black tar, If you really want nice coke you go to park city. I repeat do not fuck with tha tonging.  Be prepared to get your liqur early too the store has weird hours. A few of my friends live in draper/ sandy as long as your ok with being the only non mormon  on your block you'll be fine. Plus there will be minum crime in the area.

Now that most people have touched up on the mormon thing, Ill bring up a new issue. Why would you live in Sandy or one of the Jordans? If you want to live in a neighborhood lacking any culture, color, or liveliness, do live in either of those areas. It is in those areas you will experience the mormon culture the most and be overwhelmed by it. If you want to live in a nice house, nice neighborhood and not be overwhelmed by that religion I would highly recommend others. Check out the avenues, federal heights, sugar house has some really nice neighborhoods, or maybe even olympus cove.

But in all seriousness its a great place to raise a family and live if you have already found a girl you love. I have lived here all my life and am going to USU.

Just teach your kids a thing or two about "bologna detection" (Carl Sagan) and you will be A OKAY.

I definately wouldnt recommend the areas that you are considering. I would definately look at the avenues or some of the neighborhoods over by East High. There are a lot of chill U alumni in these areas and they are extremely active, nice neighborhoods that are real religiously acceptable. We longboard through both neighborhoods and there are always kids out playing and the parents are always outside cheering us on and giving us outside, just seems like real chill neighborhoods. Oh and the mormon thing isnt a problem at all. Hell quite a few mormons I know buy for people, and they really arent as judgemental as people make it seem. They are extremely nice people and actually clean up the city a lot

I guess this turned into SLC/Portland comparison. If you are looking for a sweet city to live in I'd go with Portland, because that is what it is. Utah is a better place to live if you want to get away for the big cities. Utah has damn near anything, terrain wise, which is why I love it; I don't have to go too far to do all the things I love.
