Semi-related to the topic, I just got my tax refund and it was a little over a grand, as of now it's looking like a road bike, ice axe, mountaineering boots, and crampons.

Spend the 5 on stuff you'll use over and over or on an experience that you'll remember. Don't spend it on blow unless you have a few friends who also have $500 to blow and you can turn it into a full on hangover type event.

DRIPs are Direct reinvestment plans. Which mean instead of going through a broker, some companies offer a Direct purchase through websites such as https://www-us.computershare.com/investor/plans/buyshares.asp?bhjs=1&fla=0

What this plan does is automatically reinvest whatever dividends that pay out from your stocks
directly back into that company but in the form of partial shares and the only way to receive partial shares is through a DRIP plan.

From the way I understand it this type of plan allows an individual to experiment with the stock market without having a large sum of money AND without paying a percentage to a broker.

Some shares can be purchased at around $50, although some require you to agree to a certain amount of time that you continue to reinvest.
